It's good to see Japan getting Aircraft Carriers. They are arguably the OG carriers users.

Yeah, OG invaders who killed Asian civilians. Japan is worse than Germany that it still worships those war criminals. Being US's ally makes you feel good about Japan but be careful it is a nation with war crime

It's complicated In the aftermath of WWII, treaties were out in place that allowed Japan a _Self Defense_ force. They could have an army, navy, and air force capable of defending japan, but carefully limited to a military that could not attack other countries, Those limitations are still largely in place and internalized to some extent by the Japanese. Many Japanese recoil in horror from any notion of a Japanese military that _could_ attack others. It leads to odd things. The Japanese have a class of ships that look like aircraft carriers, but are technically _helicopter_ carriers, used for deploying choppers for things like search and rescue, anti-piracy, and anti-submarine work. But the most recent models can carry and launch F035 strike fighters. (Those fighters can't _land_ on those carriers, which limits their offensive capabilities, but still adds a nasty punch.) There is current internal political discussion in Japan about modifying the treaties to permit Japan to have actual aircraft carriers. The Japanese are keeping a weather eye on mainland China. There are existing long time disputes over who properly controls certain waters and who has proper claim to some islands. China has not historically been a maritime power, but is expanding its navy and has an actual carrier. Japan would rather not assume the US will have a carrier battle group handy to help if it comes to a shooting war. or worry about whether the US will want to up the ante given its current thorny relations with China. Meanwhile, the JSDF navy has participated in joint exercises with US, British and Australian navy units in the area. Mainland China has not reacted well.. I suspect they think it's a pointed hint about keeping their military hands in their pockets. It probably is, but the US concern is China trying to forcibly annex Taiwan.

@@tonysbooth9179 Perhaps he means domestically designed and produced carrier (the Fujian) with catapults to launch different types of aircraft. Two carriers were designed by the Soviet Union, one produced in the Ukraine and the second produced in China by Dalian ship building company. These two Soviet designed aircraft carriers have no catapults and are limited in aircraft types due to the Ski Jump launch system. The Fujian is not in active operational service yet as far as I know (Japan times 17 June 2022 indicated that an additional five years needed for full operational capability). Mr. McCunney's information is spot-on, but a slight caveat due to the death of Mr Abe who was advocating to relax (if this is the proper word) the restraints of Japan's pacifist constitution and reshape the interpretation of Japan's National "Defense".
