When traveling in Japan, I usually try to plan to have meals at actual eateries (restaurants, food courts, etc), whilst only going to konbini or supermarkets for drinks, snacks, etc. Sometimes it's unavoidable though, due to scheduling or other constraints, so it's nice that we can get decent meals at these places. Speaking of restaurants, it's true that the machine-ordering systems (ticket machines, tablets) are more comfortable, but sometimes the experience of communicating with locals can be valuable too. You don't really get the same "omotenashi" experience from a machine. Also, every time my family goes to Japan, we have to stop at least once for Famichiki.
