H-King SU-27 - Glue-N-Go - Foamboard Kit - HobbyKing
4S 1000 35C Zippy Compact battery
Turnigy D2826/6 2200kv motor
30 amp Turnigy Plush ESC
Two Emax ES08MA II servos
6x4 APC style Hobbyking prop
Lemon DSM2 receiver
Modifications:
LED Lights
Zip-tie landing gear skids.
Ailerons adjusted as low as possible for flaps effect helps provide drag and lift during high alpha slow flying.
Elevator trimmed slightly upward.
4S battery is a must for this setup. 3S provides enough power for hand launches. 4S provides enough thrust to overcome drag on the landing gear skids during take off.
Excellent value. Very stable. Flies great. Low cost. High fun factor.

Thanks Kenneth Kiser, this motor combo is a rock solid powerhouse! I've used it on over a dozen planes during the past five years. With a light 4S 1000 battery the 30 amp ESC pairs well with either a 6x4 prop or a 5.5x4.5 prop. It can high-alpha the plane on it's tail and then throttle straight up until it's barely visible. Flight times are approximately 3 minutes pegged at full throttle and about 5 minutes of mixed/easy flying. Less than half throttle is enough to maintain a consistent altitude for 5 minutes of relaxed flying.

I've got the J-20 and SU-27 ready to be built, just waiting for the time. I went with a miniquad motor, the Gemfan RT2205L 2300 kv spinning a Gemfan 5040 prop, and a Plush 30A ESC on a 4S 1300mAh nano-tech. With the wattage difference, I'm worried I might have picked a power setup that'll be too fast for my park! The motor color will go great with the F-35 color scheme if I can get my hands on one.

Kenneth Kiser, your setup sounds fine. I don't think it'll be too much. The extra power is great for the launches. I like to get mine up high, do a few loops, and then adjust the throttle down to the minimum needed for steady flight. It glides really well.

Thanks Valkyry5. Zip tie update - use 3 layers of zip ties on the front gear and 2 layers of zip ties for each of the two main gears. Still very light and prevents damage to the prop when landing on asphalt. In the video I'd only used 2 zip ties in the front and 1 each on the mains. Eventually the pavement friction wore down one layer of the front gear. Take offs cause more wear than landings. To add another zip tie over the top, remember to hot glue the ends and the entire length of the zip tie to help it structurally flex as one. After it cools, add a little more glue to the sides. Front holes are 55mm apart and the bottom of the zip tie extends 55mm down. Main holes in the rear are 60mm apart and the bottom of the zip tie extends 45mm down. The front should be a bit higher. Aesthetically, the zip ties are barely visible while the plane is in the air. Functionally, they work great.

Valkyry5, very cool, I'll build the J-20 next and am looking forward to seeing how it flies. Just built the F-35 and will add zip tie landing gear before the maiden. The SU-27 looks really good in the air. Not sure if you noticed that HK also has a glue-n-go MIG-29. They didn't include it in the product video, but I ordered it as well.

Brilliant! I'd toyed with the thought of zip ties for tricycle landing gear but never seen it as well-realized as this (I didn't think of doubling/tripling them like you have.) Two things I'm dying to know are: (1) AUW with the setup you posted above, and (2) have you ever tried a roll-off takeoff from short grass? If so, how did it go?

Alex C, yeah, way wrong is right! I did too. Man was I surprised! Flew the F-35 for its maiden flight, but the recommended center of gravity in the manual (11.5cm in front of the motor) is wrong, which made for a crazy tail-heavy flight. The proper CG for my F-35 is 15.5cm in front of the motor. I'll post an F-35 video as soon as possible. The recommended CG for the SU-27 is correct. Might want to move the battery way forward on the J-20 for the maiden flight just to be safe. Better nose heavy than tail heavy.

2FLY4AWIFI I actually have a good 20 flights on my J-20 already. Definitely likes nose heavy, but to be honest it flies great on anything from a 1300mah to 2200mah 3s. I think I'm going with your setup though, I have a bunch of 1000mah 4s batts from my Radjet that would be perfect.

Alex C, thanks, good to know that about the CG on the J-20. Funny that you should mention the (original, lighter) Radjet 800mm. That's the plane that helped me optimize the 4S power setup. The Radjet flies like it's on rails at high speed. So the only difference between the glue-n-go jets versus the Radjet was that I used a 5.5"x4.5" prop for more speed. The setup spins faster with that smaller prop and sounds amazing, like a dentist's drill. I prefer the 6x4 prop on these glue-n-go models for better slow flying. Both props draw a similar number of amps at full throttle (

I got a question brother. The foam that's used for that Jet. Do you know if it's EPP foam. Will it tear like Dollar Tree foam board. Also will tape stick to it for reinforcement. I want to build that Jet, but I won't if the foam isn't durable.
@2fly4awifi87
@2fly4awifi87 3 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what type of foam it is, but it’s much more durable than dollar tree foam. Unlike dollar tree foam, there is no paper coating on this, rather it’s a more rigid material all the way through that’d be difficult to tear with bare hands. Tape does not stick well to this foam. Hot glue is the best adhesive for it, but use it sparingly to minimize the overall flying weight.
@ghostrider6424
@ghostrider6424 6 жыл бұрын
like the skids. just looped zipties? don't they cut thru the foam?
@2fly4awifi87
@2fly4awifi87 6 жыл бұрын
Ghost Rider the zip-ties are half looped and don’t make a full circle. Just make the holes near the edge of the foam with a knife and a flathead screwdriver, add a bunch of hot glue on the hole, and then push the cut ends of the zip-ties in and hold for about a minute until the glue cools. The glue creates a blunt stopper that keeps the zip-tie from piercing through the foam.

Ailerons setup as low as possible and elevator trimmed slighly upward is set when the stick at center position, isn't it?
@2fly4awifi87
@2fly4awifi87 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, center position on the stick should should include elevator slightly up and ailerons slightly down for more lift, like flaps, but not as low as possible. Why not? Because when you move the stick to the left and right you still want the ailerons to move both up and down to provide the maximum left and right steering control. If aileron is already all the way down it can not travel further down so the plane would have to rely on the other aileron only. You want both ailerons to roll the airplane left and right. Once the wings have rolled left or right, using up elevator will complete the turn. We call that “bank and yank.” Bank left or right, and yank up elevator to turn. That’s how the airplane turns without a rudder. Hope this helps.

@2fly4awifi87

You can, but even a 2S 2700 zippy battery has half the voltage of the 4S 1000 and weighs 33% more (160g vs 120g) so you’ll probably need more throttle to keep it flying, which would in turn deplete the battery faster and decrease your flight time. Generally more power is also more fun. I can get 3-4 minute flights going fast with the 4S 1000 or 6-7 minute flights with easy throttle management. Lighter more powerful planes are also easier to maneuver if you get in trouble, but you can try both and see which you prefer. I prefer this performance and take five charged batteries so I can fly longer. IMHO this setup rocks.

fj toys aeromodels I’m not sure, but maybe you can try it and see. This airframe is super light, so if that motor/battery combination works well in your other light planes you probably will like it in this one. There’s no right or wrong combination - it’s just personal preference. It’s fun to try it and see for yourself.

Probably 50 mph tops. It’s more of a slow flyer.
