Why India's Extreme 2023 Heat Waves Are So Concerning
India has been scorched by unusually early, intense and prolonged heat waves in 2023, with over 60% of the country recording above-normal temperatures in April alone.
Multiple factors are driving India's worsening heat waves:
- Climate change is making heat waves more frequent, severe and longer-lasting
- This year's developing El Niño conditions are further boosting temperatures
- Rapid urbanization is amplifying heat, especially in cities
The impacts on India's people, economy, and environment have been devastating:
- Heat-related illnesses like heat stroke are surging, with thousands of excess deaths
- Outdoor workers, the elderly, and low-income communities are most at-risk
- Agricultural yields are declining, threatening food security
- Productivity is falling as workers struggle in the extreme heat
- Electricity grids and infrastructure are under immense strain
As climate change accelerates, heat waves that were once rare are becoming increasingly common in India. Studies warn that if global temperatures rise 2°C, such extremes could strike every 2-5 years.
India urgently needs to ramp up climate resilience through better early warning systems, local heat action plans, and improved housing and infrastructure. Cutting carbon emissions is also critical to reduce risks of even worse future heat.
The next few years are pivotal in determining how severe India's heat woes will get. The choices made today will decide the fate of millions tomorrow.
