Gracie Jiu Jitsu for life. I praise the road Helio has walked and lead. This man and his theories has changed my life forever. I continue to teach kids and my nephews and nieces self defense part-time to honour him and Bruce Lee's legacies. I believe it's every human's right to feel comfortable anywhere he or she wishes to walk through or into knowing they can defend themselves without having to prove it. Thank you Grandmaster Helio. You will never be forgotten.

I don't speak Portuguese or understand them, but from what I see it's all about passion. Helio Gracie is very passionate man and he loves on what he does. Grappling art which is called Jujitsu from Japan and landed in Brazil, now knows as Brazilian Jiu-jitsu( or sometimes refer as Gracie Jiu-jitsu) after a little bit of modification. He lives with the art, promoting the art in every competition he goes. Now it's a global phenomenal and it's an essence in MMA. Helio Gracie lives as a Legend.

Several years ago an adjunct professor from some college in either Alabama or Georgia did an article for Black Belt Magazine. He was a brown belt in both judo & BJJ & wanted to find out what percentage of street altercations do indeed end up on the ground. He & several assistants looked at 300 videos of street fights, & made note of several statistics. Ex: % of fights where both went to the ground, % of fights where only one went to the ground, % of KOs, % of submissions, etc. Very good article.

It seems that no one (not even in this documentary) recognizes the three middle brothers; Oswaldo, Gastao Jr., and George's contributions to the family, except for the site BJJ Heroes. All of the brothers fought, and George was considered the best fighter out of all the brothers. There's a video from a Gracie seminar from 1990, where Rorion Gracie gives credit to all five brothers for the development of Gracie jiu-jitsu, but it seems that after the creation of the UFC the middle brothers all but faded from the family's history.

...because he was the first one to advocate the individual over style of martial arts, because he saw the inherent weakness in dedicating yourself to one style, promoted ground grappling as necessary to any fighter's arsenal...and he had a good knowledge of it when the only other people doing it were the japanese and the gracies were just starting. Pioneer doesn't mean fully-fleshed out and complete.

@ipv4 Margarida was Helio’s wife, however she was unable to have children of her own. So with her blessing, Helio was allowed to have children with a woman named Isabel. She gave birth to Rorion, Relson, & Rickson, but where raised by Helio and Margarida. While still married to Margarida, Helio fathered Rolker, Royler, Royce, Rherika, Robin, and Ricci with a woman named Vera. If that confuses, then Carlos will really confuse you more. He fathered 21 kids with 6 different women.

I've heard figures saying Kimura was anywhere from 12 to 40 pounds heavier. While Helio Gracie developed jiu-jitsu to defeat larger opponents, that was more about beating people who didn't practice jiu-jitsu; when you have someone like Kimura who has tremendous skill AND a weight advantage, Helio's chances drop dramatically. It's why most Absolute BJJ world champions are some kind of heavyweight (ultra-, super-, etc) You are absolutely right about one thing: the Gracies were MAD stubborn. haha
@RafaelSantos-bl1kg2 жыл бұрын

Actually, Judo is the "modern version" of Jiu Jitsu. BJJ is in fact derived from the Jiu Jitsu Count Koma brought with him to Brazil, which was developed by Grandmasters Carlos and Hélio Gracie. Jujitsu is actually another branch of Jiu Jitsu, a variant of some sort.

Maeda Mitsuyo/Conde Koma was a Judoka (a 7th degree black belt in Judo under Kano Jigoro himself); he had never trained traditional Japanese Jujitsu. Judo was known as Kano Jiu-jitsu for a very long time and this is the name Maeda Mitsuyo would have been most familiar with and it is Kano Jiu-jitsu/Judo which is the origin of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, not traditional Jujitsu.

Brazilians never paid much attention to martial arts. 10 years ago, most people didn't even know there was a Brazilian version of Jiu-jitsu. The things you see in this video were popular in the 30's in Rio, not throughout the country. First time I heard of BJJ was on the UFC. We used to see a lot more karate, judo and even taekwondo than any form of jiu-jitsu. Soccer has been the national sport of Brazil since ever. Most other sports are restricted to small communities.
