G F Handel is a genius. Never ever have I heard such beautiful music penned by this great composer of the baroque era. What a pleasure was it to hear such a heavenly sound from a world class orchestra , well balanced soloists and a perfect choral outfit! Kenny Montgomery conducted this music with so much ease, intimate connection with the musicians and simple gestures that one was able to appreciate the richness and depth of Handel's compositional wizardry.

It is an ode with music by Händel and libretto by Newburgh Hamilton, which he adapted from the original Power of Music (1697). It was composed in 1736, being presented for the first time at the Convent Garden in February of that year. It consists of three concertos. The libretto describes the banquet offered to Alexander the Great and his lover Thaïs, after the conquest of the Persian city of Persepolis, during which the musician Thimotheus sings to the sound of his lyre, provoking Alexander enough inner strength to set the city on fire, for revenge of his dead Greek soldiers. This work was very successful, leading Händel to transcribe the choral part of his operas in English instead of Italian. The music has the grandeur of this admirable and amazing musician. Gracefulness, elegance and sublime harmony are inherent in the whole work. The voices of the soloists and choir are sublime. The orchestration and direction are magnificent. It is one of the best interpretations of this masterpiece that I heard so far. Bravo!!!

And here are the lyrics: 'Twas at the royal feast for Persia won By Philip's warlike son- Aloft in awful state The godlike hero sate On his imperial throne; His valiant peers were placed around, Their brows with roses and with myrtles bound (So should desert in arms be crown'd); The lovely Thais by his side Sate like a blooming Eastern bride In flower of youth and beauty's pride:- Happy, happy, happy pair! None but the brave None but the brave None but the brave deserves the fair! Timotheus placed on high Amid the tuneful quire With flying fingers touch'd the lyre: The trembling notes ascend the sky And heavenly joys inspire. The song began from Jove Who left his blissful seats above Such is the power of mighty love! A dragon's fiery form belied the god; Sublime on radiant spires he rode When he to fair Olympia prest, And while he sought her snowy breast, Then round her slender waist he curl'd, And stamp'd an image of himself, a sovereign of the world. The listening crowd admire the lofty sound; A present deity! they shout around: A present deity! the vaulted roofs rebound: With ravish'd ears The monarch hears, Assumes the god; Affects to nod, And seems to shake the spheres. The praise of Bacchus then the sweet musician sung, Of Bacchus ever fair and ever young: The jolly god in triumph comes; Sound the trumpets, beat the drums! Flush'd with a purple grace He shows his honest face: Now give the hautboys breath; he comes, he comes! Bacchus, ever fair and young, Drinking joys did first ordain; Bacchus' blessings are a treasure, Drinking is the soldier's pleasure: Rich the treasure, Sweet the pleasure, Sweet is pleasure after pain. Soothed with the sound, the king grew vain; Fought all his battles o'er again, And thrice he routed all his foes, and thrice he slew the slain! The master saw the madness rise, His glowing cheeks, his ardent eyes; And while he Heaven and Earth defied Changed his hand and check'd his pride. He chose a mournful Muse Soft pity to infuse: He sung Darius great and good, By too severe a fate Fallen, fallen, fallen, fallen, Fallen from his high estate. And weltering in his blood; Deserted at his utmost need By those his former bounty fed; On the bare earth exposed he lies With not a friend to close his eyes. With downcast looks the joyless victor sate, Revolving in his alter'd soul The various turns of chance below; And now and then a sigh he stole, And tears began to flow. The mighty master smiled to see That love was in the next degree; 'Twas but a kindred sound to move, For pity melts the mind to love. Softly sweet, in Lydian measures Soon he soothed his soul to pleasures. War, he sung, is toil and trouble, Honour but an empty bubble; Never ending, still beginning, Fighting still, and still destroying; If the world be worth thy winning, Think, O think, it worth enjoying: Lovely Thais sits beside thee, Take the good the gods provide thee! The many rend the skies with loud applause; So Love was crown'd, but Music won the cause. The prince, unable to conceal his pain, Gazed on the fair Who caused his care, And sigh'd and look'd, sigh'd and look'd, Sigh'd and look'd, and sigh'd again: At length with love and wine at once opprest The vanquish'd victor sunk upon her breast. Now strike the golden lyre again: A louder yet, and yet a louder strain! Break his bands of sleep asunder And rouse him like a rattling peal of thunder. Hark, hark! the horrid sound Has raised up his head: As awaked from the dead And amazed he stares around. Revenge, revenge, Timotheus cries, See the Furies arise! See the snakes that they rear How they hiss in their hair, And the sparkles that flash from their eyes! Behold a ghastly band, Each a torch in his hand! Those are Grecian ghosts, that in battle were slain And unburied remain Inglorious on the plain: Give the vengeance due To the valiant crew! Behold how they toss their torches on high, How they point to the Persian abodes And glittering temples of their hostile gods. The princes applaud with a furious joy: And the king seized a flambeau with zeal to destroy; Thais led the way To light him to his prey, And like another Helen, fired another Troy! Thus, long ago, Ere heaving bellows learn'd to blow, While organs yet were mute, Timotheus, to his breathing flute And sounding lyre Could swell the soul to rage, or kindle soft desire. At last divine Cecilia came. Inventress of the vocal frame; The sweet enthusiast from her sacred store Enlarged the former narrow bounds, And added length to solemn sounds, With Nature's mother-wit, and arts unknown before. Let old Timotheus yield the prize, Or both divide the crown; He raised a mortal to the skies, She drew an angel down! lyricstranslate.com/en/john-dryden-alexanders-feast-or-power-music-lyrics.html

@futuretrunks91009 жыл бұрын
Do you know if this is supposed to be composed for Alexander the Great's work? The warrior Alexander or a different Alexander?
@shnimmuc9 жыл бұрын
The work is based on Dryden`s poem describing a banquet given by Alexander The Great and his Mistress. The poet Timotheus sings the the songs as entertainment for the couple and thus indicates the power of music.

Omar Cahbar My friend through Handel, it is starting to happen. The great pianist Alfred Brendel of Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven fame in a lecture at Oxford last month stated flatly that his life had changed in the last 10 years because of his discovery of Handel, whom he placed easily as the equal of Bach. With all the interest in the operas alone, since the mid nineties his stock has risen as one of the great dramatic composers in history and one of the greatest melodist in history

(Samuel Coleridge Taylor) In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree: Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea. ..... A savage place! as holy and enchanted As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted By woman wailing for her demon-lover! .... Five miles meandering with a mazy motion Through wood and dale the sacred river ran, Then reached the caverns measureless to man, And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean; ... A damsel with a dulcimer In a vision once I saw: It was an Abyssinian maid And on her dulcimer she played, Singing of Mount Abora.

It's too bad he edited the work from its original, fuller form; he even had to eliminate three popular arias: "Lascia ch'io mangia / mia cruda torte / e che sospiri / la rotondità," "Spaghetti, che cantate," and the Largo, "Ombra my food." Thankfully, he was able to recycle those songs into his later smörgåsbord-based operas, "La Pizza di Cici," "Il Recinto d'Oro," and "Lo Sfrigolio," respectively.

Interesting. I once read one "expert" assert that Bach Beethoven and Wagner represent the high points of composition. Who is to know? Think I see you're point about Haydn, especially presaging Mozart. Bach the musical "scientist " and LVB the Janus genius. Either way I'm with you on Brendel's Damascene conversion.So many of the musical intelligentsia seem to engage in " me too " hyperbole on JSB, ignoring( as I suggest elsewhere on your posts) the massive gap in his repertoire i.e. opera .How lucky we are to have you-tube enabling a renaissance of the genius Handel. Onward!

Modern instruments are just PLAIN BETTER than their earlier versions and counterparts of centuries ago. For clarity - for precision - for definition - for impact. That's why they were developed. I think Handel himself would prefer MODERN instruments. He was constantly searching for the new,the novel,the different - the LOUD. " Englishmen want music that hits them squarely on the ear ! " .
@SimonCakebread6 жыл бұрын
What nonsense! If you want the new and novel listen to the rubbish composed since about 1880. Handel wrote for the instruments at his disposal. I for one am grateful for the 'authentic' style of playing. Unhappily, some people are never satisfied.
