The St Matthew Passion performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. Whether or not they are an enthusiast of classical music, practically everyone in the Netherlands knows the St Matthew Passion. Since 1870 the Netherlands has had a rich tradition of annual St Matthew Passion performances. The Netherlands Bach Society was formed in 1921, in reaction to the popular performances by Willem Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The founders believed that the St Matthew should be performed where it belonged - in a church. The annual performance by the Bach Society in Naarden grew to become 'the' Dutch St Matthew Passion.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on April 16th and 19th 2014 at the Grote Kerk, Naarden. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

It is Good Friday 2024, what an excellent time to listen to this masterpiece and the great rendition by the Bach Society. The smaller choir and orchestra give this rendition a wonderful lightness and joy. A glorious way to celebrate the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus, the only way to be set free.

I generally get tired of hearing songs more than a few times, but I've watched/listened to this at least a hundred times now, and it gets even richer with each time listening, and there are parts that still send shivers down my spine. The talent, artistry, and production are beyond words, showcasing not only the incredible performers, but also Bach, and love for the higher power - all at the same time. Bravo

This is one of the beauties of great Western music. There's a richness and mystery that drives the compulsion to revisit it. You talk of getting chills. There's a term for that - frisson. It makes your body shiver up your spine, amd raise the hairs on your skin, an emotional, electrical feeling. I know not all have experienced this, but those who do always return for more. And that in the music which causes this feeling is part of the allure, a mystery and human need to revisit and know more intimately. Most people are not even aware the great works offer this.

What a beautiful, FREE gift the Dutch have given to the world! I find most versions of this work rather dense and heavy, but this is light, almost delicate. When I was in the ripieno choir at the Royal Festival Hall there must have been 40 - 50 of us. Here there are just SIX!! It's a much smaller, more authentic rendition, in a beautiful space with a beautiful sound. The quality of the audio - and the video - is supreme. These people have absolutely NAiLED it. Thanks and praise!!

It really doesn't get any better than this for a Bach Passion; and on period instruments too. Lovely little 6-part ripieno for boy choristers. Everything here is superlative: The professionalism and virtuosity (by which I mean that the high technical standard means the band is free to play with the heart); the orchestral ensemble and choral diction; the necessary solemnity and gravitas; the clear voices of the soloists; the intimacy of the whole company of small-forces, yet powerful when needed; the tasteful playing of the continuo harpsichord and portative organ; and that gorgeous Theorbo centre-stage! I loved it all. The high spot for me emotionally and spiritually is the "Erbarme Dich" - truly, the fiddle player and countertenor put tears in my eyes. I believe that this performance of what was intended to be an evangelistic work (if one obtained the lyrics in one's own language) could bring the listener to explore the truth about Christ, something which is borne out in one of the comments below. Altogether a great achievement. The Early Music Movement has reached a zenith with this. Thank you!

We live in cynical times, a non-secular population questions the truth of everything, blinded to the fact that there are indisputable facts in nature...they're not a political ploy...regardless of which path you tread, blue or red! As only those whose freedom has been threatened, truly understand the value of freedom, only those whose life has been touched by God, truly understand His unconditional love. This life is boot camp for the soldiers of God, we can't all be the Blacksmith, or his Bellowsman, and we 'grunts' are tested to destruction in this life! Trust in God, it will all work out. While I was looking up something at KZbin I accidentally saw the listing for this passion. This reminded me of the time I served in the Dutch military in Naarden in 1961 when I went to see it in the Grote Kerk in that town. Problem was the church was totally sold out except for the last seat that was right behind a very thick sixteenth century pillar. I could see nothing else. no singers, no musicians. But I could hear everything and the music was wonderful, as is this performance.

Each time I hear this, I am profoundly moved, especially by arias like "Erbarme Dich". It is astounding how Bach was able to stuff so much emotion in the rigours of baroque music. So much sadness in beauty, and so much beauty in sadness... Especially in these Corona days, when we have lived in a culturally and social desert, and have seen our loved ones die and suffer, this music gives comfort: we will resurrect!

You're entitled to your opinion of course, but objectively speaking, these singers are not "exceptionally good". None of them seems to know how to use chest resonance; as a result, the sound produced is weak and thin. Also, the choir can barely be heard, which means that it's either too small (which it is!), or they should've tried to sing with more power. Overall, these "authentic" performances have little "authenticity" about them. Yes, the choirs and orchestras of the period were small, but this doesn't mean that Bach (or any other composer of the era, for that matter) didn't dream of being able to involve more musicians and singers in the performance of their music, and it certainly doesn't mean that those small choirs and orchestras, that were available, performed with this highlighted sense of restraint and delicacy, afraid to ever produce a full, dark, chesty, powerful sound. And, of course, "vibrato-less" singing of the era is a pure myth. Vocal treatises of the time advise against singing with a trembling voice (which is a sign of serious vocal problems), and perhaps they advise against excessive vibrato, which, indeed, is ugly, but they never advocate straight tone!

@@countalma9800 I am sorry Countalma but I totally disagree. I think that the singers are exceptionally good, as well as the choir (which I personally hear very well), the orchestra and the maestro. I do not really understand what you mean by chest resonance and I do not receive their voices as weak and thin. What I also hugely appreciate in this interpretation is that the soloists participate in all choirs. This makes the choirs stronger and is actually very democratic: they are not above the choir signers / the crowd, but instead part of them...

@@countalma9800 are we listening to the same recording? I agree that say, the evangelist has quite a bright tone as tenors are wont to have nowadays, however I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. Perhaps you are hoping to hear dramatic robust singing akin to the Melocchi school, but a modern recording of Matthew Passion is probably not the best place to look for that. I have just stumbled on this totally inspiring performance of Bach's St Matthew's Passion, while staying in to save the NHS and save lives in UK. Thank you Netherlands Bach Society and all the wonderful musicians and soloists. This is truly a definitive performance!! It has inspired, consoled, encouraged and uplifted me when I, and so many around the world this Easter weekend, are seeking assurance that all this Corona Virus Pandemic upheaval and pain will pass, and God does truly love His creation and each one of us (made in his image) so much, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life!! Thank you.

@@martas9283 Intellectually it's quite easy to conclude that there is a God and that he revealed himself. The notion that anything would pop into existence out of nothing is rather laughable. This OS software has an intelligent cause, so why would the DNA accidentally come into being and have an unguided natural cause?

Bach der 5. Evangelist?

I'm a muslim but this music purely came from Bach's heart and goes to the hearts of those who feel it ,in fact music has no nationality or religion and quoting the bible "it's the peace of God that passeth all understanding" this is what this masterpiece inspires to anyone who has a spiritual inclination.Thank you for posting this video .

This music is Christian. Non-Christians love to demean the Christian nature of spectacular Christian art, but the fact remains this and JS Bach was heavily inspired by Christianity and is a testament to the beauty of Christianity.

Thank you Ahmed. I am happy to learn that Bach’s music, though rooted in a Northern European Christian tradition, has the ability to build bridges between people. In everyone of the chorales in the Matthew passion, I hear an outpouring of love, humility and compassion ... humanity’s most precious gifts ... which belong to all humanity ... and which grows in intensity when shared. Bless you Brother.

This was the most deeply moving, and extraordinary performances of this work that I have ever heard (and that is with tribute to the many great performances of Bach's great work). But this performance has such pure depth of understanding of the music -- the genius of the music -- and each performer makes it their own. I have never been so moved by such commitment and attention to providing us with the glory of what this music and composer has given us. I will follow NBS from now on, and hope one day to actually be there in person. I have few other words I can say, except thank you. This is music and art, at its apex. The interviews and the documentary were also so informative and inspiring to watch. Van Veldoven's conducting made me hear the music in ways I never had before. It's a revelation for me.
