An orchestra was playing this at a wedding reception at my friend's granduncle's house. A cousin from my friend's other side of the family asked what this is and the granduncle answered "Incidental Music for Abdelazer". The cousin said, "Oh...like the music just happens to be playing?" My friend's granduncle -- a VERY classy, dignified, stately, accomplished, and cultured elderly Southern gentleman -- grimaced and answered with widening eyes and through clenched teeth: ""Incidental Music" is part of the NAME of the PIECE!!!!" Lolololol I was DONE!!!!! ;D

At least he remembered the title including the whole album. XD I wouldn't have. Like I can hum the entire melody to the last note, but never manage to get the titles to stick because they are just so abstract LoL.

I thought this melody was a Brittens‘ work until I listened to this work by Purcell This melody promotes spiritual uplift and awakening, and activates the soul

I can understand this! I had known that Britten's work was variances on a theme by Purcell but it was only today I heard this played on Wisconsin Public Radio. Maybe someone more learned (which would be almost everyone) could tell me if the rondeau is the only part that Britten chose to use in his variations.

SONG FOR JEMMY BOWEN: Jemmy Bowen was a boy soprano (treble) who was a regular member of Purcell's singing cadre, thus the love song to a girl. He must have been held in high esteem by the composer. In one famous incident, an officious orchestra member started instructing Jemmy in how to sing divisions (improvised vocal decorations). Purcell saw this and told the man "leave the boy alone, he knows better than you how to do it!"

As much as I like the fresh and swinging recording - but why does the first Air always sound like Callithump? And it is not the only ensemble! The problem is that the voices are all close together with dissonances between Cello and Viola. All in all, it the piece hinges on pure and accurate intonation by the viola. Only slight misintonation like in 6.00, probably due to fingering, sound absolutely dreadful!
@gordonackerman41059 жыл бұрын
+rp1703 . Wrong. The problem is technical - atrocious recording and re-mastering. Awful mikes, poorly placed - 'tinny." Hogwood rarely makes mistakes in his conducting!
@sallymj89578 жыл бұрын
+rp1703 Wow, I don't hear any callithumpousness there at all. In fact, I was 2 seconds away from saying this is the least callihumpous classical Baroque recording I've ever heard. But then, again, I'm a beginner - most likely my understanding of callithumpousness is still being developed. Just funning with you.;)

It looks like a photo of budded inflorescences of Mahonia aquifolium, a shrub from the barberry family that is native to the Pacific Coast of North America, where it is known as Holly Grape or Oregon Holly Grape. The plant is very widely grown as an ornamental shrub in Western and Central Europe, where it is usually known simply as "Mahonia" even though East Asian plants in the same genus are important in traditional Japanese gardening. Mahonia buds are pale yellow and flowers are pale to bright yellow and fragrant. They mature into edible berries somewhat resembling small blueberries with a heavier bloom. Each contains a large seed. They are used mainly for preserves. The plants have variable holly like foliage that colors up well in the autumn. Birds love the berries, and as a result M. aquifolium has become somewhat invasive in Europe.

What...and you thought Benjamin Britten wrote the beginning of this piece.
@motherlandbot68373 жыл бұрын
Naaaah. Britten was a neoclassical composer, so Purcell's baroque music has very different structure and dynamics. The narrative text that Britten wrote for his "Young Person's Guide to the (Post Baroque) Orchestra" specifically identifies the Rondeau as "Henry Purcell's fine melody", but does not mention its' source.
