I don't understand why the arrow pointed down the main sequence if time brings a star up and to the left on the main sequence.

I concur. Good observation. The narrator mentions "time" right around the moment the arrow is shown, which may confuse the audience.

Maybe keeping it simple. Do main sequence stars have two ways out? Big main sequence stars head towards red giants, and either supernova or fade out as White dwarfs. smaller main sequence stars head to the bottom left fade away
