Ethan, that part with the exercise really inspired me. I've been sitting around on my ass for quite some time (don't have any lectures right now, and have already worked to my pay limit for this month in the first 2 weeks), and I've really been feeling kind of down in that time. Now some jacked dude telling me how exercising can change my life - that isn't inspiring to me at all. But if the fupa god himself tells me that he has been feeling better ever since he exercised - that connected with me. So I just did a 40 minute workout on the crosstrainer (gotta start small), and I intend to keep that going (besides, can't hurt to lose some of that fupa of mine). That Mcdonalds-coffee lawsuit was actually really fucked up. Mcdonalds spun the whole thing around and the media chewed it up. If I remember correctly until then the "fresh" coffee was stored in boilers with a heating iron in it. The temperature in those flactuated extremely, causing this particular boiler to give out coffee that was basically boiling.

Mambo Gimbobili Yeah it pisses me off how the woman was memed on. I've watched some stuff on it and a documentary about it talking with her daughter and it ruined the womans life. The coffee was boiling like you said and when she took the lid off it was so hot that it disintigrated the cup and thats why it spilt on her. She wasn't at fault at all. The burns from that along with the hate she was getting for suing McDonalds made her a very unhappy lady until she died a few years later. Its a really sad story that people had taken out of context and made it seem like it was a ridiculous lawsuit

I can finally understand the whole exercise makes you feel better thing. I don't exercise at all (at most, I'd need to walk around my campus) but I'd recently been taking martial arts classes every Saturday. While I feel pretty gross after each session, I also feel kinda great, and I'm usually one of the more energized students in the class. I used to feel a bit of fear before each class because of how strict the instructors need to be, but recently, every time the class gets cancelled for a day, I feel really sad and disappointed. It's fascinating (fascinating) how my disappointment is overriding the slight fear. Anyway I think everyone should give exercise a shot. Doesn't need to be often, just needs to be consistent. Heck, the only real exercise I do is once a week. You'll start feeling anticipation for that exercise routine after a while, and you may even feel actual disappointment when you miss a session.

Hey Ethan, great podcast. Just be careful about insinuating that exercise alone can prevent depression better than meds or other methods. Exercise can be effective for some people with depression, and in some cases can be very effective. However, I think it might be important to emphasize the importance of listening to your doctor/psychologist/psychiatrist. Some people have depression that requires medication and or continued therapy in order to target. For anyone who wants to try exercise as a treatment or additional treatment. It will not work immediately, it will often takes weeks or longer for the beneficial effects of exercise to be noticeable, especially if you have been depressed for a long time. If you are taking medication, keep taking it. If you are doing therapy, keep doing it. However, exercise can be beneficial physically and psychologically.
