It’s so sad seeing Love and Olivia trying to convince Ethan that adderall is a MEDICATION to treat severe ADHD and how when prescribed correctly it actually really helps people with ADHD think and feel like a person normally should. I’m sorry, but it’s not difficult to understand that our brains literally don’t work normally, and the majority of people prescribed ADHD medication aren’t using it to get high af but use it to actually be able to think. Big props to Love and Olivia for not getting frustrated and keeping calm seeing as they both have ADHD themselves
@m00nsicle
@m00nsicle 17 күн бұрын
As a pharmacist I agree, these medications when prescribed correctly can change people's lives. However, when misdiagnosed and provided to people who do not need it, it does have the risk of addiction due to euphoria. I think its important to understand and educate people on the risks of a medication before trying it. I think both Love & Olivia are right in that people with ADHD should not be shamed for taking it, just like people who take opiates for debilitating pain should not be shamed for treating their condition, but the risk of longterm addiction and euphoric-chasing tendencies is a adverse possibility.

One of my parents is a teacher - she had a child in class who was on ADHD meds and then the mom took the child off them. The child started doing significantly worse with classwork, emotion management, and socializing. One day the child had a meltdown and cried, saying their brain was talking too much. That child was succeeding with the medication, and being off of them had a noticeable negative impact. I think the mom did eventually reinstate the medication. All medications have potential for negative experiences, but this should not hinder people from receiving the treatments they need. Peace and love of course ✌️❤

@amelialouise9089 24 күн бұрын
@@ellaisboring So annoyed too. The medication is not addictive for people who have adhd. The medication chills me out, quiets my brain, helps me work and sleep. It will only be addictive if you dont have ADHD and it makes you tweak out. Since when are we basing a medications value on how it effects people who take it illegally without need for it? If you take something like Ritalin and you tweak out then you do not have ADHD, having adhd isn't just oh I can't focus, your entire brain is wired differently and stimulants literally cannot give you a hyper reaction. They do the opposite. There is an issue with people being misdiagnosed and put on it but that's an issue with the diagnosis/doctors handing it out easily and not the medication.

Just here to add my two cents into the adderal discussion. I’ve been on a stimulant for the last 6ish months for my severe adhd, it has absolutely changed my life for the better. I also don’t agree with giving it to children so loosely, but if it would have helped me as a child maybe it could also benefit my children in the future. I don’t think children need to be experimental guinea pigs for these medications, as they are hard drugs for people who don’t need them. I don’t think Ethan was shaming parents who give their children stimulants, but he’s coming from a place of concern for children being prescribed stimulating drugs

The part that irritates me most about Cassie's story is that the vast majority of people won't reflect upon how they spoke against her and stayed passive or took Diddy's side. The wrongdoing only partially falls on Diddy's shoulders; there were not only many people who took part in his "afterparties," but many more people who were aware of what was happening over the years. Even after Cassie came out and asked for help, she was met with a huge wave of doubt and scrutiny. People will laugh if you suggest our culture facilitates this kind of hell, but you'd be hard-pressed to find another story to exemplify that idea more effectively. Regardless, people are just going to chalk this up to being an "exception" and move on without realizing how easy it is for us to just be passive and complacent towards abuse.

I completely understand where ethan is coming from regarding the whole adderall thing. Some people are prescribed adhd medications who do not benefit from them and it is a pretty scary thing being on something that feels too strong for your brain. They are in no way comparable to antidepressants because antidepressants take at least 3-6 months to take effect while adhd meds work within 30-60 minutes. Stimulants are immediate and clearly felt while antidepressants simply helps your neurons absorb more seratonin. In my freshman year of high school I was prescribed concerta, a stimulant way less strong than adderall, and I ended up becoming irritable, shaky and anxious, and felt like eating was a chore from how much it completely wiped out any urges to eat and made me feel constantly ill. I lost over 10 pounds in less than 2 months without realizing. I’m now on a different stimulant that is even weaker and feel a lot better with it! It all comes down to actually telling your doctor what is and isn’t working, which is why it is a bit worrying when small children are being put on a very strong stimulant. There’s a variety of options to help children that are less closely associated with meth than adderall. I just don’t think Ethan deserves much flack for judging from others bad experiences with adderall and worrying that it’s bad for children, because it definitely can be and it is in NO WAY comparable to SSRIs as some of the crew was suggesting.
@m00nsicle
@m00nsicle 17 күн бұрын
Yes, thank you, I completely agree, I had to end up skipping the rest of the discussion as a Pharmacist it was painful listening to it. The withdrawals of Amphetamines and Benzodiazepines compared to 'withdrawal-like' symptoms when coming off SSRIs are completely different. SSRIs have no euphoria and are not addictive. It is best for them to not speak about this with assumptions as it just causes medical misinformation.

As someone who works in the medical field, I see medications like Adderall definitely over-prescribed for children in the U.S., often incorrectly prescribed to treat ADHD-like symptoms that overlap with other conditions (such as depression, anxiety, and trauma disorders), and it IS known to sometimes cause tics in children who aren't supposed to be on it. Obviously for those that truly need it to function, these medications are a lifesaver, but they are also seriously misused more often than we like to admit I think. I once oversaw a case where a literal 2-year-old was diagnosed with ADHD and given Adderall, all because her parents were overwhelmed with dealing with the normal behaviors of a TODDLER. She was one of my cases that ended up displaying a tic disorder a few years later, and ultimately they stopped her on the ADHD meds and her tics lessened. I still wonder how in the world that provider was able to rationalize doing that.

I’m a psychologist who works with kids and I completely understand where Ethan is coming from with his perspective on Adderall. I constantly have school staff and parents immediately jumping to Adderall when their student/child displays symptoms of ADHD - some as young as preschool and kindergarten age. It’s not as carefully considered as it should be. I’m also frustrated with the lack of effort put into alternative treatment prior to starting on such intense medication at a young age. I always recommend they try interventions to teach positive behaviors and coping skills before they jump the gun - especially since this a critical development period, they are still building learning stamina (since they JUST started school), and they haven’t tried anything else. Buuut 9/10 times they go to their general physician and come back with an Adderall prescription. Adderall is so helpful for people with debilitating ADHD symptoms; however, there are some very serious ethical problems going on with these prescriptions.

I'm glad someone had a sensible comment! Glad it's saving people's lives, but the angry commenters don't understand how often these types of drugs are prescribed to children who don't need them. When my brother was a kid he was proscribed Zoloft. He told me it made him feel so awful, like a zombie, that he considered suicide. He used to pretend to take the pills and kick them under the furniture. I told my doctor when I was a teenager I was having trouble sleeping, and just like that wrote a script for Ambien! Luckily my parents knew what it was and kept me away from abusing it. We forget doctors are paid by pharmaceutical companies. Again, they are great for some people who truly need them, but Ethan was right, a lot of kids are on meds who really don't need them.

I know you’re goofing but I’m neurodivergent and can’t help myself on these topics LMAOOO i’m sorry but it actually makes a lot of sense, because Ethan is ND (tourettes) and it’s very common that ND people attract one another even when they don’t know about each other’s neurodivergence. So, especially in this case I think it may be that because Ethan himself is ND and there’s many ND people in the cast, it results in a show and format that is especially appealing to ND viewers!

Took Adderall 30MG(XR) (prescribed,ADHD) for 20 years This is my experience. -I cannot feel hunger at all anymore which has resulted in massive weight loss and poor eating habits. -My sleep schedule has become completely un-predictable. I have zero control over when I sleep my body must shut down physically to sleep otherwise it will not happen. -My work life suffered dramatically because I was unable to get any sleep/eat properly. -My mood became completely boring or flat. I had absolutely no excitement for anything anymore & my creativity started to dwindle day by day imagining stuff less, exploring ideas less. Those were pretty harsh negative side effects so that I could pull a 80 average in school. 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂ 1/8 kids in my school were diagnosed with adhd. my case is the similar too dans t, a teacher told the parents their kids had ADHD the parents went to the doctors then got a diagnoses and pills. Shitty behavior to do as a teacher.

PSA: adhd meds are life saving meds. Just as life saving as SSRI’s and others used to treat e.g. depression and anxiety. And just like other meds, adhd meds don’t suit everyone with a diagnosis, but that doesn’t remove the fact that the meds are still life saving for so, so many.

@@djbr12Yes, not directly. But the adhd meds are highly stigmatised and that results in a situation where the initial assumption for many people is that most people who are using them aren’t using them for actually life saving purposes. In my country it’s getting increasingly difficult to actually get a diagnosis or meds, because of this very stigma. And difficulty getting treated for adhd is life threatening. And in this episode, unfortunately, Ethan was enforcing that very harmful stigma. Out of ignorance of course, but still. And my comment was mostly targeted towards people whose prejudice got some gas because of this convo, hence the ”PSA”

hot take but dan could not b more wrong on the adderall conversation - I have adhd and had the exact experience ethan described where I got addicted after taking too much - I was given it too yooung and it’s extremely over perscribed and ethan is so right- kids should not be given such an addictive stimulant as easily and frequently as they are being given these days - this is coming from someone who will be 2 years sober next month after being addicted to pills since I was 15 after my doctor perscribed me adderall and continued to up my dose instead of addressing my anxiety and depression which was the root cause of my ‘lack of focus’

I get where Ethan is coming from regarding the Adderal discussion (I know he was focusing on kids, but there were negative undertones toward the drug overall). But I really wish he would steer away from these topics because stimulant meds already have such a stigma around them, and he comes across as pretty judgemental. Untreated ADHD is debilitating, and getting to a point where you need help is not easy. Sometimes, that means you're at a point where your entire life has fallen apart. Adding stigma and shame to that equation isn't helpful.

Idk when it would come up again, but I’m gonna need Zach to clip Olivia happily saying “Yay meth!” at 53:09. 😂 As for Adderall, just want to say the recent restrictions on ADHD medication (and the rhetoric that fueled these restrictions) is really damaging to people who genuinely do better with it. I’ve been on medication before when I really needed that support and I can’t imagine the government stepping in and forcing me to ration what I have or go without completely. I see the effects of this first hand with a loved one who went through all the hoops years back to get their ADHD seen as a disability employers need to make adjustments for. It’s really upsetting and infuriating to see them suffer so needlessly and watch the consequences of them being more often than not unmedicated. Anytime I can rant about it, I will. Also, for what it’s worth, one of the worst experiences I’ve gone through is tapering off of an SSRI. Even slower than recommended and with my doctor, I nearly lost my job because it was so incredibly intense for months. The experience genuinely scared me off going back on medication. So, we shouldn’t make Adderall out to be a spooky drug. Everyone reacts differently to medications. It’s all about education and listening to healthcare professionals. ☮️❤

Its not harmful. Theres a difference between stigma and hesitance/medical distrust. Its very reasonable in this day and age to have some medical distrust- many things that are considered normal in the medical field are archaic and absolutely deserve to be approached with caution, especially in the areas of prescriptions. Its even fair to spread the idea people should be cautious to get in the cycle of taking aderall or their kids taking it. Its even fair of others to say the same about stuff like anti depression meds and i wish ethan would umderstand that with better nuance just bc his experience was good. But thats not the same as stigmatizing something and acting like someone is less of a person for needing it or feeling more like themselves on it.
