Ethan when you're talking about "particles coupling" near the end of the podcast, you're referring to quantum entanglement. Unfortunately it can't be used to communicate faster than the speed of light. That comes from a misunderstanding perpetrated by popular media of exactly what entanglement is and, most importantly, how it's measured. I wish I could explain that in more detail but it was explained to me by a particle physicist and those were the broad strokes of what he was getting at. Just passing on what he told me.

About the particles communicating faster than the speed of light: this is as far as i know a misconception about quantum entanglement. You know the state of the other particle by observing one of them, but changing the state leaves the other one unchanged. So there is still nothing, as far as we know, that can go faster than the speed of light.

Here's a brief explanation of what mining is doing, since it was asked (but not answered) in the show. Mining is what gives some important security guarantees for cryptocurrencies. By requiring a massive amount of computational power, it prevents people from doing double-spending attacks. The systems are generally set up such that a new "block" of transactions can be posted on average once every 10 minutes, and the difficulty of finding a valid block increases as more mining power is added, in order to keep it at once every 10 minutes. By increasing the difficulty, it makes it harder for someone else to make a separate blockchain with more work done on it than the real one, and thus prevents people from rewriting the history on the blockchain to double spend. Also Jake's right that, past a certain point, no more coins will be mined, but there will still be transaction fees funding the miners (every time you do a transaction, you give a small amount to the miners to ensure that your transaction will be included in the next block, and it's in their own best interest to include transactions with the highest mining fees). And as for the question of what the mining algorithms do: they're essentially just doing tons of work that is all guessing (that can't be circumvented, but is still quantifiable) so that the "real" blockchain can always be defined as the one with the most proven work put into it.

I love Jake. He's so creative with his videos. He really goes deep into them. Sometimes I can't rap my head around some of his content. But I really love all his videos. I really enjoy the stop motion videos exspecily the tear down videos of the Nintendo game consoles. I think those videos are one of his best. But it takes so much time & is so much hard work & time consuming. But Jake makes it look so easy. My son has Crohns disease & has a really hard time with it. He's 6"3" & weights like 120 lbs. It's not only shiting all the time it's also throwing up. He has to use pot to make his self hungry just to make his self eat. If it wasn't for that I think he would be dead. It's a very bad disease. And cost so much in medications. They need to change laws for medical marijuana for this disease. Bc it does help with this disease. My son is proof. Thanks Jake for all your videos, Chris
