In the Western part of the US it’s common to take small trips to the grocery store often rather than buying a lot of groceries at once. So the fresh produce often gets used the same day you buy it.

As a fellow Swede, I'm also a bit confused with everyone's reaction to onions. I thought it was quite common to have a lot of onions since it's quite a versatile ingredient used in a lot of dishes. Maybe it's because it's warmer in California and onion might not be used as often in "fresher" dishes like salads or like bowls? Otherwise I'd imagine you'd want some onions hanging around even when you make burgers or something.

It's literally just a sour yogurt. Saying it's like cheese is nowhere near accurate lol. There's also Laban ayran which is the drink you were talking about at the end.
