Marc, to try and fix your noisy X-axis, try adjusting the bit switches in Parameter 1 for the X-axis labeled Low Pass +1X, Low Pass +2X, D Filter X8 and D Filter X4. Adjust them one at a time from 0 to 1 or vise versa and monitor the noise on the axis. I've seen machines were the noise/growling is actually a control loop tuning issue that can be easily fixed. Haas provided some PID filtering adjustment for each axis via parameter 1 (X), 15 (Y) and 29 (Z).

Hi Im pretty sure that this is a worn ballscrew assembly or bearings causing the noise but it defintely does not hurt to try your suggestion so i will give it a go and see if it makes a difference, either way i will post up what cures it or what i had to do in the video Thanks Marc

Mark, I appreciate the effort you put into making these videos 👌I`m digging into the Haas stuff myself, and it is great to learn from other peoples experience as well, specially when going in depth and making it as detailed as you do. In my experience many older machines are still mechanically sound (given that they have been properly maintained) but the controller are kind of outdated for modern machining strategies. I have been thinking about a Centroid retrofit on my older Haas, but it is kind of hard to tear apart something that actually work just as it should. Don`t know if there is a market for Haas secondhand parts... What I have seen is that some of the controller items have been advertised at ridiculous high prices, don`t know if they ever sell at such prices though.

Hi Yeah I agree that if looked after mechanically they can be great still but yes the boards and drives are the expensive issues and they fetch strong money if you need them or crazy money from Haas if still available Personally I’m not interested in control swaps but it’s definitely a viable option if you have the know how

Nice machines.. i used to make the enclosures for them, some were huge, mostly mazak stuff and the suds pump tanks. I wouldn't know where to start, actually using one👍

Make sure to make a parameter backup asap. The X phasing error is more than likely the encoder on the motor. The test to verify would be to test X axis at different rapids. If you try a different motor make sure you cycle power in between. Also some axis channels share inputs. So a problem with the 4th axis could cause other axis to alarm. Try disconnecting the cables into the mocon from the 4th. Good luck.

It has the back up disc with it but once I’ve done the gearbox il open the pendant and fit one of my spare usb floppy emulators and do a full back up I want to make sure I can sort the gearbox issue and that all runs nicely before I start on the rest as if the gearbox is no good etc then I will break the machine for spares

Yes it was, i thought if i cant fix it i would break it for spares so time will tell how it turns out and of course the videos will show whatever happens

So far everything looks pretty good, other than the obvious problems you already knew about. The worst part about buying something Second Hand is having someone tell you their version of the truth ?? Seems nothing the seller mentioned is contrary to what you were told. I'm sure someone is watching this thinking. Sell it to me 😅 It would be a perfect machine for someone with a small shop who only wants to make small volumes of parts 👍

Yeah that’s exactly that, I was well aware of the gearbox issue but there was no mention of this phasing error alarm and a couple of other things but il take it as it comes

Is the 4th drive amplifier not for the spindle, the vector drive/320v PSU doesn't look like its the version that drives a spindle

No this age machine does not use an amp for the spindle, the vector drive controls spindle and the 4th amp is for a rotary 4th axis

No that’s not possible as the small gear is actually part on the main shaft that runs through the larger gear so it’s not reversible

we have that X phasing error as well sometimes pop up at startups, but it always clears with a reset and doesnt come back all day

Hi Yeah is exactly the same, shows the error on power up but press reset and so far it does not come back again but I have not run the machine properly yet so it leads me to think parameter but parameters seem to match my other machines Will dive into it deeper when and if i manage to sort the gearbox issue Thanks Marc

My 2014 vf3yt/50 had a fewr box issue and i ended up just bypassing the gear change amd leave it in high gear and so far haven't needed low gear yet.

Hi That’s what they had done with this, changed the Hi gear speed change threshold to 10pm so it always stays in high gear but that’s still gives an issue on power up re start when it tries to select both gears to check itself so it’s normally only bad seals that cause the issue and fix the issue when replaced Thanks Marc
