I got my first machine with Renishaw probes in 2006. Never want to see an edge finder again. So much faster and capable! I can get X/Y/Z in a single shot, measure angles, diameters, etc. all with the same tool. I also learned how to integrate the macros into programs to check dimensions of a part feature during setup. The edge finder is only there to deal with a day where the probe is out of batteries or damaged. I am thankful for this video since I nearly forgot how to use this traditional method.

Great video, but a quick question, on the new machines that have every function turned off with the doors being open now, how would I run the spindle with the door open? Any advice on that? thanks

One trick I was suprised not to see is using a multimeter. If you're machining metal, you can put a multimeter in continuity mode and clip one lead to your tool and one to your stock, and jog the mill until the multimeter beeps when the two make contact.

The other day I broke a probe tip (jogging in the wrong direction!). I immediately felt a little rush of anxiety as I thought "How am I going to set part zero now??". Luckily I had a spare tip and was able to change it and get back to work quickly (If you can call two hours to re-calibrate the probe quick). I have edge finders but my attempts to use them in the past pretty much failed. Very informative Haas Tip of the Day!

So which one is the most accurate ? It would be super cool to see a final measurement (reference?) with the probe. We could then compare all of these measurements. Thanks a lot.
@haasautomation8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. The edgefinder can be pretty accurate if you get good at it, and use .0001 increments, but it is affected by the material you are edgefinding (rough or smooth), so I tell people not to trust it better than .001” (I know, there’s that one guy who can nail it within tenths every time!). The Probe and a Haimer 3d Sensor are as good as their calibration. I trust the Haimer and my probes within a few tenths all the time, because I keep them well calibrated (they don’t really move, I just verify them often). When I need a “second opinion” I always accept my indicator as the final word on the matter. Hope this helps! -Mark, Haas Tip of the Day

Hey. I live in South Africa. I really like your tip of the day! But on this tip, it would have been very interesting to see the different work offsets for the different methods. I use an edge-finder a lot. But mostly use a .01mm probe with a 2mm ball... And take the backlash (if any) in a clockwise direction.

We got our 3d Sensor with an integrated Haimer CAT-40 adapter, which worked really well. The indicator is fully adjustable for run-out though, so as long as you have a solid hold on it, it will work fine in almost any holder. You can give the folks at Haimer a ring for more information and their recommendations. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

how about setting z offsets? when i used to work on a haas (i work on heidenhain now so this doesn't apply but i'm still interested) i used to have to touch my tool on my touch off gauge and type into mdi: g43 h01; ; ; ; put it on single block, press cycle start, then type that value into the z offset then subtract my touch off gauge. i have a feeling i was missing a setting. the z value always seemed wrong when i used "part zero set"
@CNCMachinistEducationNetwork8 жыл бұрын
Edge finder is old school and back in the 80's we never used the G54 work offset at first. we set all tools to top of part and left G54 z at zero. Then we were shown a way to share tools (like a face mill ) for multiple ops. We used the table for the common surface with a 2.000 block or a dial gage. So we took those numbers for tool offsets - then we measured from 2.000 block to top of part and that was usually a small positive shift like +3.050 and that's what we put in Z work offset. That's what we teach at our HTEC school - probe and old school - Like he says - not everyone has probes.

@vipergtx75 жыл бұрын
I could be wrong, but for the manual indicator off set, we should have typed in MDI G154 P1 G0 X0 Y0 to see if it worked. The G54 offset would be based on the edge finder.

@haasautomation8 жыл бұрын
Good catch! If the numbers don’t match, you have to ask yourself why - and something didn’t add up. We had moved the part in between pickups, and didn’t convey that in the video. Good eye, and thanks for the comment! -Mark, Haas Tip of the Day

@fly32097 жыл бұрын
nope, it doesn't matter the depth, it should indicate the same at any depth because the tip is a precision ground ball/sphere, with a precise radius, the angle is always the same (of course, only the ball must touch the workpiece edge). if the difference wouldn't be so big (0.2036 in or 0.517 mm), I would say that the edges are not square...

A step can be saved with the edge finder. I find the edge, move up in .001 just above the part in Z. Stop the dial on Zero, Then move X or Y one full turn to Zero. You can see if you moved it the correct direction. Then part zero set. No math.
@Limosical8 жыл бұрын
i think the idea behind the method shown in the video is that if you're still at the point where you're having to wind the wheel to get a visual representation of where your tool is in relation to which way you've wound it, instead of just typing -.1 or +.1 into the offset table, then changing the tool makes sure you're above the job, a little bit safer.
@donaldhollingsworth38754 жыл бұрын
At GE if the machine didn't have a part probe, the machine was programmed to come close to the part & stop then using the hand wheel in .001 we would move the tool towards the part & set the tool using a piece of .030 shim stock. This way is a lot easier then the ways you showed.
