Really important topic that I feel goes undernoticed by people. Can you do more on these relating to air quality and chemical exposures (coolants, solvents etc) so that way the more people learn the more informed decisions they can make!

I just started weating 3m peltor tactical 500's, they are big over the ear style muffs with microphones and speakers in them. They play back the sounds of the shop at a safe level, it can hear voices more clearly with them like they are a hearing aid.

My boss pays for custom made hearing protection for every production employee. They are 200€ a pair and made from 3d printed acrylic (they take an imprint of your ear canal and scan/print that so that you can change a sound filter for varying degrees of protection while) They are way better because they are way easier to use and with the right filter you can still understand your coworkers and don't have to pull out your earplug to hear what he has to say with your oily fingers.

I've done yesterday morning my yearly physical and have also had my ears tested: so far i can still hear every frequency range from the test. By the by, been working in a workshop since 1999, i'm 41 years old and currently work 10 hrs daily next to a mill (Mikron) or lathe (CMT). I ALWAYS have with me, whenever i go out ANYWHERE, a pair of triple flange earplugs (in my honest opinion and experience, these are the best also because they have a small stick in its axis so you touch that instead of the flange itself, extremely useful as it doesnt dirty the flanges that go inside your ears) When i attend some Zumba public events i always use these earplugs as the music is stupidly loud. When i've attended the Zumba Basic Steps 1 Instructor course with the earplugs on i could see the pains on the other (pretty hot female) instructors, especially those directly under the loud speakers. Makes me wonder what's the point of looking seemingly fit yet with hearing problems...

I agree, the 'sticks' (rigid core) really helps to aim and push the earplug in the correct amount. Unless you roll the foam ones exactly, they don't go in well, not to mention getting them dirty with your grimy hands.

Lots of operators love to blow off parts for 30+ seconds with the air gun full blast. The best is when guys wear headphones thinking they are protecting their hearing while also listening to music and have the music cranked to 100db for 8 hours

I got msa active protection with gel cups. Amazingly good fit and works. Tho the active part is useless in workshop environment.

What about those ear muffs with built-in headphones? If the music is low enough to hear the (100db) machine does that mean that the SPL at the ear is 100 minus rating of earmuffs, i.e. about 75db? What about if music is actually louder to the ear than the machine? Does that mean that protection of ear muffs is practically cancelled out?

As a machinist and shop owner.....this topic has been quite a struggle. It is quite a challenge to get any of my people to properly use ear plugs. I have tried and tried to explain why and how to use them - but still see them just barely inside the ear. Not sure how to deal with people that just don't listen or care. This is personal protection, how can I 'tell' someone to care about their hearing? I can't.

Factory400 Maybe they cant hear you. Just joking. I have made it compulsary for everyone to wear ear protection once they are within the boundary of our machine shop.

I hate ear plugs they are painful and wasteful, I use the 3M Peltor with gel ear pads, expensive but man they keep noise levels down, somewhat comfortable, only issue is ears get sweaty when it's hot, I already have tinnitus so to not make it worse I always use them, if you a fan or AC shop then that protection should be mandatory or fire them. Not cheap but effective.

Thanks for this video, this is a very important information that I didn't know, then I have a question: What about breathing the refrigerant mist or the metal fumes, and more when opening the doors of the machine at the end of machining? Is there any harm to health?

I like to be able to hear what my tool is doing. Wearing ear protection and standing in front of my machine, while not being able to hear anything makes me nervous.

Jak & Skills MVP - I know, right? Me too. The machinist I sit next to is near deaf in one ear, so he said he didn’t need hearing protection (ears already bad), but that is exactly when you really need to protect what you have left. We can be around air guns, just not too long. Doing the math, with the whole Time Weighted Averages TWA, is kind of wonky. There is a bit of information here I feel needs annotation. Doubling the distance. drops the sound level by 6 Db approximately... in an open environment where the sound diffuses, in a closed environment. reverberation can keep the sound pressures higher. so that's not always a good approach to think you're far enough, when the sounds reverberating inside of a smaller building or production cell. so really. just get some good hearing protection.

Also technically, the "sound pressure" changes he described are the sound energy, not pressure. The energy is proportional to the square of the pressure. So 10 db is a 10-fold change in sound energy, while 20 db is a 10-fold change in sound pressure. But it is still true that prolonged noise will damage hearing, and "prolonged" could mean several hours in a day, or a period of years where hearing gradually deteriorates. I tried to wear sealed audio headphones to listen to the radio without raising the sound level in my soft-top Jeep, but it turns out the audio jack in my radio is an input to play sounds from a cell phone, not a headphone output jack, so that didn't work! Just regular noise reduction headphones help a lot, if I crank up the radio volume above the wind noise they reduce everything so I hear the radio at a reasonable volume. Or leave the radio off and reducing wind noise is very helpful.

How loud is a Haas machining centre in general while milling if the doors are closed? Are we talking 70DB, 80DB, 90DB.......

Jens - It depends on the cut being taken. Most machining operations are well under our 85 dBA average threshold value. Being next to more than one machine might increase the overall dB rating by a few dB as well, more sound pressure. And remember, that air-gun can cause unsafe dBA levels, typically higher than any of your machines.
