In his new book, How to Be an Antiracist, Ibram X. Kendi holds up both a magnifying glass and a mirror to examine how to uproot racism from society-starting with ourselves. Followed by his talk at UC Berkeley, on September 12, 2019, Kendi is joined in conversation by john a. powell of the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society, Lateefah Simon of the Akonadi Foundation, and moderated by Alice Y. Hom of Northern California Grantmakers.

The guy was born in 1982. I would hope to believe that we also have other things in common, such as our love for Star Wars and Prince... he grew up in Queens, NYC and talks as if he has experienced slavery first hand and was colonized on his stoop, while eating his Reuben Pastrami sandwich.. dude, c’mon. He is fetishizing the black experience based on the rhetoric he grew up with and claims to speak on behalf of all black people. His viewpoint are his own subjective experiences- but it’s not fair to assume that all black people had the same sentiments or experiences growing up- and that all black people buy into his anti racist theory. It’s his right to speak his mind. But he doesn’t speak for everyone.

@@kevinboone2178 huh? I mean- in “400 Souls”- his new book, he basically confirms my statement. Blacks are not a monolithic block. All have different experiences. Has he gone to the “Breakfast Club”- no. Why? Because mainstream black culture doesn’t embrace him. It’s the white liberal elite, who only read the New Yorker, NyTimes , Atlantic and ProRepublica.

Let's see if I've got this right: If you are not a racist, you are a racist in denial. If you are anti-racist you are still racist but trying not to be. If you are not a racist and you are not aware of it then you are definitely a racist. If you are trying to be anti-racist but not there yet then you are still a racist. If you are a racist and admit it then you are an honest racist (but still a racist) If you are a racist and you hide it from others then you are a closet racist. If you are a racist and you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community then you are definitely NOT a racist. So my question is this: If a racist falls over in a forest and no one is there, are they still a racist?

You're misrepresenting what he said. Also, while many Hispanic and Latino people don't use the term "Latinx" in common speech, it is a very common phrase used among academics and isn't meant to be an insult, but rather a more precise term.

Academics are predominantly white. Their status as academics doesn't make it any less racist. It makes it more racist since they are educated enough to know better than to think that they have the authority to alter the language of another culture to fit their ideology when the people of that culture don't use it nor do they like it.

@@tboyer86, you're correct. That is a stupid argument, which is why it's not what I said. The thesis of my argument is that the specific academics who say "latinx" in spite of the fact that the predominant majority of Latin Americans don't recognize it as a word, are most likely white, and that their bastardization of our culture in this form is evidence of their racism, which is made worse by the fact that they are academics and have the education to know better, but still choose to take this racist action. By the way, Tim Boyer doesn’t sounds Latino. Would you happen to be a white guy telling me how to recognize my own culture? No accusation, just a question born in observation, looking for clarity.

I am very skeptical of speakers who use emotion over data. The intentions of anti-racism and the speakers are well meaning, and there are good things that can come of this, but also a lot of damage as well. John Mcwhorter, Glenn Loury, and Coleman Hughes (all black) have podcasts and youtube videos discussing race and racism using well researched quantitative data. John Mcwhorter specifically has a compelling video on how anti-racism hurts the black community more than it helps. The heart of the argument all three of them make is that racism (systemic or overt), to what extent it actually exists, is not the biggest threat to black Americans and black communities. To focus solely on racism as the main factor for disparities in the black community would be doing them a disservice.

Rent controls, like any price control such as minimum wage sounds good. You'd think it would lead to more affordable housing but ultimately ends in less housing and higher prices for housing that isn't rent controlled. The best way to affordable housing and higher wages is by banning price controls which will result in more housing and jobs. As company A & B both offer the lowest wage company C, that offers the higher, will attract more employees. Company A & B, to attract talent, will have to compete with company C by raising wages. Concerning rent, landlords lower rent to compete. The more we build the less we'll pay. Indeed, shortages leads to inflation.

Hello, though I've listened, to only one conference of yours, I've been all the more impressed by the level of your knowledge that after all, myself, I am not a doctor...my late father was, and I pretend to understand gaining a doctorate relies on tons of energy, work, sacrifices....if slavery was well based on a biblical "theory"(story of this famous Ham 's descendants), I suppose, as it partly brought economic enrichment, that other artefacts (hopefully the word is right) can be said, along the same kind of believers, to be justified ("and ancient") in the same way. Mathematics or economic mathematics offer other dimensions that have been finally considered. As racism turned up to be one justification, if I may say so, it also means that such theories have nothing to do with any concept of progress. Progress of any kind has never prevented ancient theories, said to belong - apparently - to ancient ages - to be perpetuated : they are like stones, winds, and seas : they cannot disappear. Though they can be measured by humans, if I may say so, they cannot be erased by them. In fact, I wonder if you've questioned yourself about the meaning of progress. How is it that progress does not consider equality as a condition? I've never read K. Marx, but I hope he has wondered about such concepts. Economic equality may not be a condition as it does not mean anything, unless other conditions can be simultaneously fulfilled ; but it seems that what you may talk about is an equality of chances, at certain levels, which give way to endless discussions...Thanks, take care, regards.

The only reason why Coleman holds value is because he's black and willing to speak ill of the black community, regardless of what he states is factually accurate or not. Because I'm white, I'm automatically racist. When I say I love all humans, I'm consider racist. When I say I'm not racist, now I'm racist. This breaks my heart. These racist talks by blacks seem to teach other black people how to be racist. Just love all humans. Individual characters are the issues, not the skin color. If there's a group of white people that show hatred towards blacks, it's that group... not white people. Skin color is not the issue, it's character issue. You're kinda doing what Trump does, tap into people's fear and anger... and that in itself creates a following of people to point fingers. Look at the evidence below... when reading comments on this video, anyone questioning the video is told they are inherently part of the problem. IMO, the solution... teach people how to love unconditionally. Give without expecting. Throw away your ego. Do kind things for people and don't tell anyone. Your ego will try to separate you from others. Make nothing about you. Just tap into your servant's heart and there you will find yourself sitting next to happiness.

I’m trying to learn these ideas. I don’t understand the idea of racism being 600 years old (I haven’t found the right time stamp yet #18:00-#29:00 ). Maybe I’m still not understanding this content and definition of racism. I consider Classical Greek and Roman examples of labeling the people who spoke other languages as “barbarians” to be similar. The group in power excluded the outsider barbarians. That’s 2000+ years’ history. I’m probably going to look back and wonder why the hell this idea caught my attention. I bet a psychoanalyst could shed some light on this as deflecting instead of engaging. I’m learning and trying to engaging or at least learn about engaging by starting dialogue about things that are difficult to discuss. It would be easier for me to look away and pretend systemic racism doesn’t exist. I’m pretty sure my comments show that I haven’t made progress in becoming anti-racist..... yet.

I agree with some things he said, but i disagree with the root of his ideology. I don't think that supporting a policy that generates an unequal outcome between groups is an act of discrimination. I think everyone should be equal under the law, but if a law that doesnt take race into account generates different outcomes between different groups of people, it's not necessarily the law's fault. That's not to say that racism isn't happening. It's just that I don't think legislation can be racist unless the legislation specifically includes discrimination based on race.

Well if this religion and its preachers would debate there religion and its foundation that requires faith and belief the prophets are from God.... I mean any racism. If you dont except jesus as your savior as in the bible you are doomed to burn for eternity. There are the rarest times when a person debates the mythology of their religion ...theory in this case sure ok. But it's not done and then you ask why is it not. This is not a religion or political mind control device. There is no asking for faith in the ideology. No mention of needing to forgo method ofnlogic and science to the ethos. This is not on accident there are no debates on this religions rhetoric. Just like christianity there is no proof beyond a man rose from death and walked on water. It takes a voluntary spiritual intellectual leap of faith to accept the will of the person teaching the implant device fo which you can base a set of ideological self imposed methodology based on a 100 leap of faith to believe eternity in hell awaits if the planted device is rejected. This is not original this is fair sure but it not pure. This is a calculated and descised method of planting an internal device to remote control with words. Activating the planted character device if ever rejected. Setting up the indoctrinated for acceptance of the word of the leader else guilty. This is the reason there are no debates on this and no asking for the faith when there can be no logic applied. The very reason logic and scientific method also debate of this religion. It's because to debate it will destroy the devices power. It is a psychological method of manipulation being used point by point. All points and times designed to dismantle the belief you are not subject to this religions truth and any question of this or acusing the preacher of his clinical deliberate use of psychological use of subversion with intent. So thos is why and how you can come to understand the behavior and refusals defend this religions mythology. Jesus is not up for debate and they and him no exactly how to use religion psychology. Good luck with it

Kendi’s arguments are so catchy because they are fundamentally the same that have been made by religious fanatics for thousands of years. He starts by turning the existence of racism into an unfalsifiable hypothesis: if you claim you are not racist, that makes you a racist. Then he uses the false dilemma fallacy by creating a false dichotomy between racism and anti-racism. This is not intellectually different than the age-old argument that atheists have a religion since to not believe in God requires faith: to be an anti-racist, you must first admit that you do racist things. The idea that we are all sinners, or as it is written in Romans 3:10 “None is righteous, no, not one,” is not new either, at least for the West. We are in a new era of anti-science and witch-burning and it is starting with pastors like Kendi at the tip of the spear.

This is now absolutely common practise in the mainstream media these days. I started noticing it on the BBC in Britain years ago when topics like race and feminism are up for discussion. You have a sympathetic host who moderates a conversation between 2 or 3 people who don't disagree about anything.

Like who would even agree to show up in this political climate. Trump? Lol, loller, lollest! But, as he has said over and over again, 'he is the least racist of anyone you have ever met in this world.' Or maybe they should bring Richard Spencer, but his arguments won't hold water against such intellectuals. No racist would agree to show and be literally destroyed on such a panel. It would be suicidal. Lol. And that's why they only have people who agree on everything on these panels. Lol.
