Unfortunately, in these days when women sing the female roles, there's not a lot of call for countertenors and the rare male sopranos in opera companies. There are, however, countertenors who sing in concerts and a lot of old baroque music originally written for castrati. It's lovely music, just full of trills, arpeggios and grace notes. I would love to hear him try that.

I don't speak French. I made the mistake of taking Spanish instead of French in school and now in my old age I regret it. Thus I would not dream of attempting this song. Just like I regret not having learned Irish from my Irish grandparents. As it turns out, there's even more silent letters in Irish than French. But I digress. I can't speak to the correctness but he definitely sings it beautifully. I have tried to follow along but French pronunciation is so different from English. In any case I don't think anyone should attempt this song in French unless they have the guidance of a native speaking French teacher as well as appropriate singing/voice lessons. This is one that sounds easier than it is. But when nobody else is around I hum it to myself.

When I hear him sing, I don't see his waving ebony hair, or even the ocean-blue eyes that light up his face, let alone whether his voice matches his image. When I hear him sing, I see the work that lurks in the shadows like a priesthood to keep his angel voice. When I hear him sing, I imagine the training he underwent as a child, then the determination it took to counteract the inevitable decline of his voice in adolescence, and finally the willpower deployed to maintain this perfection. When I hear him sing, I just want to say thanks.

This reminded me of my mom who passed just a year short of 90 years old. We lived in the remote North of Canada and she loved music but we rarely had an opportunity to see anything live unless we travelled South to Toronto. So records were it. She loved classical, choral, opera. Years later, I convinced her to move ‘down South’ in her 70’s to be with me and bought her season’s tickets to the opera, symphony and other concerts. This video of yours reminded me of those happy years so thank you. And, oui, merci for not butchering the French!
