Based on its motto of thoughtful intellectual engagement, #HabibUniversity organized a session to discuss the most pertinent issue of our time, “𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧’𝐬 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞” with Former Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Dr. Miftah Ismail. Session was moderated by Dr. Aqdas Afzal, Assistant Professor, Social Development and Policy at Habib University, and one of the leading economists. From domestic political instability, need of long-term strategy to combat economic fluctuation to the devastating impacts of recent floods on Pakistan’s economy, the session covered each facet of Pakistan’s economic fabric and came out as thought provoking and academically stimulating. The session was made more intellectually vibrant with the rigorous participation of Habib University’s students.

30:38 I am not sure if this is done for rhetoric or it is truly believed, but it is a misunderstanding in Pakistan that India's IT exports happened because Nehru/India started IITs back in 1950s. But the fact is there is no correlation between the two. Most IITians chose to go abroad. They did well for themselves. Contributed back to India in many ways but India IT Industry was built by Non-IITians like Narayan Murthy and Indian Business houses like Tata and Wipro. Even Sam Pitroda, who famously proposed to Jack Welch the CEO of GE in Sept 1989 that India wants to sell software to GE which is seen by many as the first inflection point in India's IT industry, was not from IIT( though funnily, he was from Illinois Institute of Technology). The entire bulk of students which power the Indian IT industry don't come from IITs.

Pakistan doesn't have any Economical/ Political problems. Basic problem is Governance. Every Government are unable to make simplest decisions. Until and unless Governance issues are not resolved, Pakistan will remain in this condition. For Governance you have to make Harsh Decisions. For Harsh Decisions integrity is most important. In Pakistan all leading personalities integrity is dubious. No debt service. Only 11% line losses are allowed or taken in accounting more than that is Completely Corruption. Someone who is ready to make Harsh decisions can bring Pakistan back on track otherwise remain in this doldrums. Prices of every single commodities according to international prevailing prices. All kind of Subsidies must be abolished immediately.

Pakistan May have a small carbon footprint but it had the highest deforestation rate in Asia in last 5 years. Think it did not contribute to climate change? Do you think that the illegal realty development by the likes of Malik Riaz which blocked the natural flow of water of water, insufficient investment in dams, the failure to desilt the dams as well as water pipes in preparation and of monsoon had no bearing on the quantum of impact? My 2nd questions, our remittance are almost same as Exports. When he mentioned that we had import of almost 20 Billion USD for next 3 months and mentioned that we would not have money for 3 months' imports, why did he ignore remittance which is almost 2.5-3 Billion a month?

He was talking about how the global financial institutions see the country's position when they hand out loans to them so they don't account for your earnings which are through exports, remittances and fdi. They do that because if you don't have sufficient liquid funds to finance your imports then you are a bad risk so in that situation no bank would want to lose their money by handing it out to you, that is why at that point IMF becomes really important as they give you money at the time when no one else is willing to. So by reviving IMF program Miftah really saved us from an imminent default.

I was extremely disappointed with the quality of questions asked by the students. Specially the question asked by the Lady Professor who asked such as silly question and surprisingly she is teaching in KU in applied Economics. She thinks that EU, Gulf Countries and UK, & Canada will lend money to Pakistan to buy oil from Russia while they are using oil as weapon! What a joke. What pakistani actually export? All we do is just import. If remittences will stop today we are done!!! I am not PTI or PMLN supporter but these are the facts. We need to be self efficient.

@@omersadaqat3191 Pakistan has been bailed out 23 times by the imf in the last 50 years, thanks to the corrupt governments from the past. investments come from major corporations investing into the countries, for example a western clothes retailer invests in manufacturing factories in Pakistan, this will create wealth, jobs and prosperity in Pakistan, but unfortunately western companies are not going to invest in a country where there is no law and order and where corrupt politicians are above the law, first law and order needs to be created and then investments will come, this is not going to happen with the chor sharifs and Zardari.

@@sohailrazaque9785 I totally agree with you but I want to again ask you about import and export ratio. Pakistan need to cut the import bill and curb on growing population. Sorry to say but in 75 years no leader has provided any vision. I was expecting in Imran khan era he will set down some vision for next 20 years but unfortunately he failed to do this. Why someone from outside will come into your country and invest ? No infrastructure, No law and order , zero tolerance. Even Bangladesh economy is better then us because they are exporter now and we are just importer. We are just buying cars and phone on foreign loans. We don’t live with in our means.

Please invite someone credible enough to discuss such complex topic. His past and present is full of supporting corruption and rough financial practices/personalities. It is a shame to have a person of such caliber speak national economics at a prestigious university.

What credibility does a person have when before coming to power he was saying petrol should abc and dollar should xyz. He was either A) knowingly lying to everyone B) didnt know what on earth he was talking about. Here we have the same person showing himself to be an expert on economy, this is the epitomy of incompetence.
