"not until the fat lady sings", this is an expression that describes the ending of a long Richard Wagner opera, which was finally over after the "fat lady" (Brunhilde) had sung. So when Will Smith gave the cigar to Jeff Goldblum, he basically told him to light it only after their task was done.

The major commanding the facility doesn't get enough credit. He's spent years in charge of a facility where they'd shoot you on sight just for getting onto the land. But still, the instant someone brings to his attention that civilian lives are in imminent danger, since they all know about the base anyway, he immediately orders everyone down into the safety of the facility. A mere soldier would've simply continued to follow their last directive and would've probably kept everyone off-base, even if they knew about it all. Major Mitchell (Adam Baldwin) did what a soldier is really supposed to do...defend the people.

If I'm not mistaken, Bill Pulman's (President Whitmore) speech was mostly or entirely improvised as the script wasn't complete or parts were still being finalized/rewritten, but they directors liked it so much that they decided to keep it in.

Childhood fan here. You have just watched the BEST movie of this genre. Very few alien invasion films will impress you after seeing Independence Day. This film raised the bar for all of cinema. But uh, we aren’t discussing the sequel. Period. :) Fact: The super weapon you saw is the primary weapon of the destroyer ships. A cluster of particles travels down an axis, striking the target city at its highest point. The blast sends a wall of hellfire in all directions for 15 miles, exterminating every living organism in its path. Russel Casse’s kamikaze attack was so effective because he struck the weapon right as it fired - the literal equivalent to putting your thumb into a shotgun as it’s being fired.

Another thing that most people from outside the US don't understand is how early so many of us start shooting. We grow up shooting guns as a part of our culture. Taught by parents who grew up shooting. Usually deer hunting by 12. Expert marksman by the time we start hunting. It makes a massive difference when the chaos of fighting starts.

In fact, all the explosions were practical effects. What was done was the miniatures were recreated only as solid black and then the explosions were rigged on the duplicate miniature and then overlayed on the previous miniature of the actual cityscapes. Also, the explosion used for the alien ship after he flies his jet into the beam is the explosion used for the Empire State Building just flipped upside down. :P

Right. Here in California we unfortunately have become so accustomed to earthquakes that below something like 5.0 on the Richter scale does not cause anything like the excitement that it might cause elsewhere. Here in the U.S. the most dangerous place for future earthquakes is really Missouri and Southern Illinois. The famous earthquakes a hundred years ago were strong enough to cause the Mississippi river to reverse direction for a time. At 5he same time today building codes there are not strict enough to protect the population.

I’m not going to speak for anyone else but in America, you volunteer to be in the army. After certain amount of time you can leave, but a lot of people have made this their career. So trust me when I say that all our soldiers love their job. They hate the war part but they love defending America. So we hold our soldiers in a very high respect. Because they risk their lives for us. Also, I think they don’t tell everybody about area 51 is because we change our government often. So if you were to tell everybody then it wouldn’t be a secret anymore. Area 51 used to be secret. But then it got too difficult and they declassified it but we don’t know what’s in there.

One of my fav scenes in the movie is when they start uniting the world. In particular with the Middle East group, it was only a split second here, but there's 2 fighters with their planes- one Palestine and the other, Israel. It shows that even former foes can become allies, which I love seeing and I wish this kind of thing would happen in real life. So yeah, uplifting.

As a life long passion for physics, I can tell you that none of this is possible. Energy requires a source. That ship could harness that power, but that ship isn't even possible. To defy gravity like that. We are talking about Massive amounts on energy, more than even possible. Maybe if you had a black hole in the core, then maybe. We can a lot as humans, and sci-fi like this, at least helps us to grow. Would love to see how were are a few hundred years from now.

The actor from Full Metal Jacket also acts in a tv series called Firefly. It has a huge cult following and was created by Joss Whedon, the same man who did multiple Marvel movies. It only ran for a season and it has been said that a person who didn’t like Joss Whedon who was in a position of power found a way to destroy that series. Either way it’s awesome to watch and I bet a lot of people would love to see you two react to that.
