When breaking bad habits or starting new healthy habits, I think motivation is often essential to get these ideas in motion. Skizz had a memorable quote from a prior stream where he said, “If you need motivation, you have to acknowledge you’re worth it.” I think this virtue is quite appropriate for the topic of habits and perhaps it’s something additional to the conversation Skizz and Impulse just shared.

When I eat out, I may occasionally finish my meal at the restaurant (depending on the size of the meal); however, I trained myself when I was in college to recognize that if I eat half now, I can take the other half to go and have the same meal as like, a nice lunch the next day. At the time, this was just me trying to save a few extra dollars so that I could go out to eat again with friends without breaking the bank, but it helped me in more ways than I realized.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm going through a divorce and have moved and sold our house but lots of stuff was just packed up and moved, rather than going through and deciding if I really need all my junk. I just wasn't in the mental space to make those decisions. But now I'm trying to focus on decluttering and keeping a cleaner home than I have the past few years. It will be better for my mental health and make my day to day life much better with less junk in my house. My new habit is to spend 15-30 minutes every day or so either on cleaning tasks or going through my stuff and decluttering. Otherwise I end up saving cleaning for the weekend and then it's just overwhelming.

Impulse, Skizzleman, thank you for this podcast. I’m normally just a silent causal Spotify listener, but I have to take a moment to thank you for both this and other inspiring podcasts. I know for a fact this will become my ‘What’s Stopping You?’ where I end up changing something big and using this as endless inspiration. I’ve ended up with a really bad habit of just sitting in my room watching endless youtube videos and this podcast is the one that’s finally breaking the habit. I’ve previously tried giving it up for lent and just telling myself I won’t, but it never lasts more than a month. This podcast is the reason I’m going cold turkey and deleting youtube from my iPad. And I’ll also try to use this video to get into better work habits as well… so much of my life is bad/good habits I need to change and know this podcast is going to help me become a much better person. Thank you.

About Impulse-ive buys, maybe it(s an idea to only buy things you need, like your daily bread or milk. When you want to buy something you don't nééd, you can put it on a list, and buy it next week if you had time to think if it's a good decision to buy it. And buying other things is important too, but I believe it makes you happier when you have postponed the buying for a week, and had time to think about it. My example would be a bag of cookies that look very delicious in the store. Don't take it with you that day, but dream of them for a while, and the next time you're in the store, and you are still thinking of it, you can take one with you. That really helps preventing a habit of impulsive buying

Imp, to start your day on a positive note on the couch you could use a bullet/ gratitude journal. Whatever you want to call it. It can be digital or a physical book, I use a real book and just list 3 to 5 things that morning you are thankful/ grateful for or happy about. It's just a nice way to start your day off positively before things get crazy 😊

The whole removing of triggers is actually really good advice for breaking bad habits. We recently learned my mother was an alcoholic and one of the things going through the whole rehab process taught her was how to avoid her triggers when possible and how to cope with them if she can't completely remove them or herself from the situation You both talking about trying to get better at working out and eating healthy really makes me wanna try myself. It's just the fact that I work an overnight shift and finding time to work out around that is difficult, especially because of my insomnia, which causes me to have to dedicate more hours to sleeping than most people. I'm sure there's a way to work around that, i just don't know what it is yet

I’m not sure if you all will ever see this, but I wanted to thank you for being a huge reason as to why I still have over 400 days sober and am continuing on because if I get too sad and stuck in my head, I can throw on a Phasmo Vod and distract myself long enough for the urge to pass.

I find developing a new (good) habit is all about consistency. At least for the first week, or few weeks, or month, etc., you really need to push yourself to do the thing no matter what, because in the beginning you probably won't want to. At a certain point it becomes less of a struggle, and eventually it becomes automatic to the point where you feel wrong NOT doing it. Once you've crossed over that tipping point, it's a habit and it's baked into your lifestyle.

In almost 18 years going to the gym weekly, 10 years twice a week, I have missed 8 regular classes. Those 8 are because either I was sick; twice I was in traffic so long the class was over when I drove into the city; once I had something to do that I couldn't reschedule. There are penalties, but I usually do not register for the class, we don't have to, I just go. My motivation to go is "the instructor is expecting me to be there".

I’ve learned that making the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard applies a lot of the time. With myself, with animals, with people. The wrong thing doesn’t need to be painful, it just needs to be inconvenient. The right thing, when teaching or making a habit, should be the path of least resistance, and the other thing should be more difficult. I bite my nails, so now I paint them, and carry something like a candy to do instead of sitting and trying not to bite them.

Then I either coarse correct or live with my choice. It’s been helpful for me. I’m trying to make habits easier to succeed at like you setting out your clothes. We got this! This was so relatable.

Hey guys , just wanted to say this podcast is really helping me out. I particularly enjoyed this episode, it actually got me to get up and go exercise for the first time in months. Impulse - I am seeing such a different side of you to what I've seen on hermitcraft etc. I know you don't know me, but you seem to care about comments, so I hope this is one of the good ones that make it through to you. Your value is so extremely evident to me, as a viewer. Your content is fantastic, truly, and I genuinely do feel frustrated on your behalf to hear how often you struggle with self-image etc. I know that Skizz puts a conscious effort into trying to pull you out of those thought patterns and I think that's good, but I also think it may help to hear it from a member of the public. You're amazing dude, not just your videos, you. The way you approach topics shows such a deep and understated intelligence and maturity. To be honest that's relatively common if you know where to look online. What you have over and above that, that is much more rare, is that you are very clearly a good person. Your heart is absolutely in the right place and that may seem like something small, but to me that's the most important trait a person can have. What's more is that when you're in your comfort zone (which seems to be on these podcasts) you are truly, so funny and entertaining. You really don't need to try, the moments i enjoy the most are when you are being entirely, unapologetically and authentically yourself. Again, I know you don't know me, and I know that the person I've come to 'know' in you is just one facet of you as a person. So I could have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. But at the very least I do hope that amidst any comments that may play on your mind in a negative way (I doubt there would be any on this channel) what I've said here can help to center you in some way. You are doing a good thing on this earth, you are helping people. That is so important, so thank you for that. Skizz - You have infectious positivity, and it's something that seems to bring out the best side of the people around you. From every single season of 'N' and scared to your life series to your streams, you are bringing joy to people. Truly. And on one hand, it is an escape for people, it certainly is for me. But its also so much more than that, and I think it's important to acknowledge to yourself that you are not just providing entertainment. This actually goes for both you and Impulse, you guys are creating a space, in what i consider to be quite a scary and dark world, where people can find comfort, familiarity and honestly to some degree, peace. You also do all of this with such a healthy approach to things that I really admire. You both inspire me a lot.

I’ve been helping my cousin to stop vaping and one of the adjustments I came up with was for him to keep his vape somewhere where he can only reach it every once in a while, so instead of carrying it in his pocket with him he’s been leaving it in his locker in school so he can only use it during breaks (which is only twice during the day in his school). He was in a bad mood the first few weeks because of withdrawal but it’s actually working, he doesn’t crave it as much. Making it hard for yourself to keep up the habit really does help in the long run

The moment of gratitude thing is kind of important. I agree with another commenter that making a journal of some sort would be good. Looking back, one tends to remember the bad stuff, I suspect because of trauma or shock. The good stuff tends to be accepted as normal, and it is, but one needs to make an effort to make those good things memorable. Pictures are one way we have to do that, but flashing your camera at every good moment is weird 😂, not to mention impossible…the moments tend to be over before any thought of pictures comes to mind. A journal where you can record word-pictures is an excellent idea.

Before I even listen to opinion in this podcast. I hold a belief that habits related to routine and discipline are healthy and should be nurtured. Not to say being "stuck in ones ways" is necessarily advantageous. Habits in relation to addiction, or obsession become ingrained physiologically, and psychologically to a point were they are devastating to ones self. The latter has become very present in the forefront of my mind as I have dealing with a 27 year addiction to tobacco this last month, trying to reduce or potentially quit altogether. Ok now I hear what you guys say. Thanks for these, I enjoy them🤙

This is one of your best podcasts yet. Very relatable, extremely good advice, great personal life examples. Sure, it's a bit heavy towards health, but it beats being heavy towards work. Really good. The new "set" is much nicer, too. I know Skizz won't see this, but the editing was even better than normal. It felt so natural, possibly because of the set.

I really like that advice actually of to break a bad habit, make it hard/punishing to have that habit cause I've been doing that tactic for a while now. My bad habit is boredom eating, when I get bored I find snacks to eat until I find something to do because it keeps me busy however, it's caused a huge problem in not eating well, and gaining weight. So I started being more conscious of how much I hate and how often, then slowly I've started cutting down the amount of snack foods I keep in my house, to make it harder to snack cause, you can't snack on what you don't have. And anytime I catch myself looking for food when bored I will tell myself off for it, out loud. Then the problem of keeping my mind engaged in stuff so I wasn't bored but that wasn't hard since I have plenty of hobbies. So now I'm eating better, losing weight, and getting back into hobbies I haven't done in years so boredom eating has actually become less rewarding than what it used to be. Which is great and I'm so much happier now without that habit!

I actually think it's strange that in America workers rely on it so much to survive or get by. Hubby and i have been working on our healthy lifestyle change. couple of things my roommate and i did. we meal plan and shop ONCE a week. and then the entire week is taken care of. down to who is cooking, and everything we do is made from scratch. right down to mac and cheese or mashed potatoes. and thats GREAT for us. because if I want Mac and cheese, which isn't great for me, i have to make the freaking cheese sauce. we stopped buying soda, cause if its in the house we'll drink it. I switched what Ginger ale i get for my cronic stomach problems to a type he can't stand, so that helps him. we bought big metal tumblers that are for water only, and silicon straws, because we both drink more/faster if we have a straw. so our super cute tumblers are ALWAYS with us, no matter where we are in the house. bedroom, kitchen, living room, tumblers there. if one of us is getting up to refil on water, we'll grab the other one's cup. the next big habit we're working on, is making up a list of all the chores/cleaning that need to get done around the house, and making a schedule. because we've discovered just how much we actually thrive on schedules. and we'll hold eachother accountable for it.

On kicking the Door Dash habit and cooking, try to choose places that offer healthier food choices. Try to pick the healthier options on the menu (not Taco Bell). Also keep in mind, the slow cooker can be your best friend. You can prep the meat (or meal) the night before, then get it started in the morning. Come dinner time all you have to do is throw together a salad or a side and dinner is done. I have a cookbook called Fix It and Forget It. Has tons of slow cooker recipes that will save you the hassle of getting dinner on the table

Hey guys, so much love for what you are doing. So many of your episodes are about making the right choices for a productive life and that has helped me so much. However....seeing the two of you as old friends.....when is it right to just live in the moment? When/how often is it right to just enjoy life and have a few "sodas" with the people you love and who's company you enjoy. Even if it is not the productive use your time, when is it right to just live your best life with the people you love? Skiz has said this as a parent but for people who don't have kids, when do you just let yourself make the "bad" choicea for the sake of experience? I think it's a topic worth exploring, especially for the two of you, as you are clearly trying to be a good influence on your audience. I Would love to hear some stories of when you were just living in the moment (even though it might have been the "wrong" decision). Big love boys. Keep on doing you! We are all so here for it. X

Especially pies, stirring milk for 30 minutes straight is no joke. I was working on making my bed while listening - decided to put a book on the nightstand so when I wake up its there and I can read a quick chapter when I get up as I have been trying to read more but just can never set a consistent time to (though considering I get up for work at least 3 times a week I wont be able to follow through every day but baby steps). And a lot of times - this goes back to the whats stopping you podcast - but finding reasons to set good habits / stop bad habbits. I'm starting to try to quit biting my nails all the time, my girlfriend said that the reason she keeps hers a little long is because they work excellent for cutting plastic which okay thats my reason.

One thing I did in order to help save money was to have 10% of my paycheck diverted to a separate bank account at a bank in another state. I intentionally did not memorize account number or set up online banking or anything. The only way I can get access to that money was to call the bank during banking hours and have them wire transfer to me or mail a check. I didn't want to put it in some sort of investment account in case I actually needed to access it for some emergency, and investments were being handled separately. But if I needed car repairs or something I would have a nest egg hidden away just difficult enough that I can't use it for indulgence, but just easy enough that I could get to it if I really needed to.

I know I am 2 days late but as someone who has a plethora of bad habits regarding mental health, I think one piece of advice that I follow is that if you have a mental illness, treat it as you would an illness of the body. One of the most common habits mentally ill people have is beating themselves down every time they don't keep with the pace of society, without noticing that they are not capable of functioning on the same level as someone who's mentally better off. If you fail, forgiving yourself for failing is not equal to giving up. You don't expect from someone with a broken foot to walk at the same pace as someone who doesn't have a broken foot because it's unrealistic, so if you are mentally struggling don't expect yourself to function like a mentally healthy person would. (also apologies if I wrote something incoherently, English is not my first language)

On Be-Soda intake-- There was a time my husband realized he was treating it like it was actual Soda, 2, 3, 4 a night (I know people who drink more but this is not their story) and he realized it was making him not feel so good, the buzz was not a good feeling and it was more the taste than the feeling he was going for. The next time we went to the store we looked at the non-alco beers and realized there are quite a few more than there used to be, no longer just O'douls. So we bought a couple of different 6 packs and he tried them, don't feel crappy from the buzz, decided this one tasted good, that one not so much. The next week it was a couple of different brands, again, feeling better over all, this flavor is good, that one not so good. This worked for him because we realized it was the flavor not the end result of having multiple (the buzz) being the reason for the drinking in the first place. He does not like actual soda, too sweet, and does not want to feel like crap from having too many Be-Sodas so it made sense. Maybe look at the WHY and see if that can be changed, having a couple of non-alco, for the flavor might do the job for you. Either way, good luck in that journey

I totally get the thing Impulse mentioned about not being able to do nothing. I went from working full time and going to school part time to having 2-3 months where I had no responsibilities or plans. I had to force myself to do a jigsaw puzzle because it didn't feel like I had the time for it because I should be doing something "productive" instead. It took those months to remember how to relax again.

When y'all were talking about bad habits and just taking the first few steps, I grabbed my phone from infront of me and just started unadding people one Snapchat that I don't actually know or talk to that much I had grown a bad habit of always using the app and snapping people non-stop and have been trying to stop and this episode really helped me do that. I also went and unfollowed 20 or so people on Instagram that I don't care about that much (Snap and KZbin are the only social medias that I've really ever gotten addicted to as a bad habit and this has helped me reduce that for Snap) Edit: I also just unsubscribed from ~10 different channels which hopefully should help reduce the amount of KZbin I watch (I was subbed to ~150 so now its ~140 which is still a lot but most of them are Hermits and Life series members)

Of all the topics you two have covered, I find this one is probably one of the most difficult. I'm aware enough to realize I am not alone in this. I'm a smoker and have been since I was 13. I am now 56. I have COPD. I have attempted quitting so many times through the years that I finally gave up even considering it. Today I have put my cigarettes in the freezer so that I have to get up off my butt and walk into another part of the house if I want one instead of having them within reach to light up without even thinking about it. Will this make me quit? Maybe not. It's some type of positive action though. It's a start. Even as horribly unhealthy as smoking is, I believe procrastination is my absolute worst habit. Setting yourself up for success, Impulse, with laying out your workout clothes the night before sounds simple, but it REALLY flipped a switch in my brain. There are a million little things I could do that would help sidetrack my procrastination to get stuff done. One good habit I have already started to help with that is quite often when I get up from the PC (where I am for most of the day), I find something to do for just a few minutes before I sit back down. Maybe I take out the trash or switch the laundry or empty the dishwasher. It only takes a few minutes and I actually feel like I accomplished SOMETHING. Having the dishwasher already emptied makes it just that much easier to clean the kitchen because it's one less step waiting for me. Anyway, many of these podcasts have touched my heart, stimulated my brain and made me smile and laugh out loud. A million thank you's would not be enough to express how much I appreciate both of you and what you are doing here and in other venues. Thank you both so very much. Love your faces. :)

lot's of good advice in this one. For me, I have to stop a bad habit cold turkey. I am the type to take a mile from an inch, so any allowance guarantees that I will not kick my bad habit :'). But, because of that, I've had to learn lots of tricks for not doing things, and if you condense what you guys said into the timespan of 1-7 days, it is exactly what has helped me a lot

Tips in the UK where I live sort of depends on your class and financial situation. Most people don’t expect massive tips as waiters or waitresses because you don’t know the financial situation of the person paying. One of my parents is from a more working class family and another from a more upper middle class family. So when I go out with my maternal grandparents or because I’m still a student, I usually just round up. So if the bill is £18.50 they get a £1.50 tip. But when I’ve gone out with my paternal grandparents, they usually round up and then add on another 10 or 20 pounds depending on how much was spent. And it also really depends on the place you go. If you’re going to a relatively cheap restaurant, it’s sort of just rounding up or not at all for a tip. If you’re at a fancy shmancy place a relatively large tip is usually expected. But for normal people. Just round up to the nearest 5 or 10 and you’re probably fine. And sometimes you don’t even need to. The rounding up is usually just for convenience so you don’t have any change from a note.

I actually have a severe hair pulling habit called trichotillomania- or trich for short. It did start with my eyebrows when was around 10, but in high school, i pulled out my hair from above my forehead. Fast forward to college, i had pulled at least half of my head hair. Im doing better now, but yeah, thats a big one and its cool to hear someone talk about it cause Ive never met anyone else with trich

Really good episode as always! I used to have a really bad habit of browsing reddit for hours before bed and almost as long if not longer when I woke up. There wasn't even anything new to see half the time, the feed would just be full of the same posts but when there was a new one, oh boy did it keep the scrolling going. I tried limiting myself, I tried unsubscribing the subreddits I spent the most time on, but if I reduced the time I spent scrolling in the evening, I ended up scrolling that amount or more during the day. Had to pull the trigger and just delete the whole app. It's not like I never use reddit nowadays, but it's closer to one hour a month if even not that. I end up doing so much more as a result of it too. Speaking of building good habits, I've been wanting to build a habit of doing creative writing for a longer time and with there now being an episode about habits and all, it seems like it's about time to actually start it. Starting from tomorrow (it's late right now where I live, otherwise I'd start now), I will every day do at least 20 minutes of writing related things - be it drafting scenes, building characters, writing itself or editing the script itself. I don't know how that's going to end up looking like in a week or so, but let's see how it goes!

This actually reminds me of a quote my band director, I think came up with and had on the wall of the band room. The quote said “Practice makes habits.” and I think he had a talk with the other band kids about that.
@junoantaresofficial Жыл бұрын
My orchestra director always said "Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect." Which in my eyes matches the spirit of your quote really well. Whatever you spend time doing repeatedly whether it is "correct" and/or desirable, or not, is what becomes habit.

The bad habit I have is KZbin itself I spend hours watching it everyday. I want to stop however I feel like I'm missing out on the content that everyone is producing and it draws me back in.
@sanautin Жыл бұрын
KZbin is addictive and can easily become a habit. I fight this by not letting myself watch anything unless I'm doing something else at the same time. For example, I did my workout while watching this.

Learn something new today...The habit of pulling out hair is called Trichotillomania, a form of OCD. My daughter has had it since about age 6. She's 30 now and still does it when anxious.

I currently have a few *really* bad habits. Or it’s sort of the case where I’m not sure whether it’s a bad habit or a lack of a good habit. But it really to me is about weighing up, “Am I willing to go through that short term pain for a possible long term payoff?” And when I weigh it up the 5 factors I’m thinking about it is, “How extreme is the short term pain?” Is it like getting a stitch from a long run or is it getting tortured at Guantanamo bay? “How long must I experience the short term pain?” Is it as short as pulling off a plaster? Or dedicating an hour a day to doing a workout I don’t enjoy? “How possible is it that the long term payoff will even happen?” Ideally this would be 100%, but most often it’s between 60% and 90% if you’re considering it. “How good is the long term payoff?” Am I going to be happy for the rest of my life with only minor interludes of sadness? Or am I going to get a free cornetto from Muhammad at the corner shop every day I go? “How long until I get to that long term payoff?” Will I have to wait a few weeks? A few months? A few years? There are a lot of things to consider. And if a few of the negatives are extreme enough, it’s difficult to justify the ends no matter how good they are. Would you experience extreme pain and anguish for 6 hours a day every day for a decade in exchange for an 85% chance of you being actually truly happy for the rest of your life afterwards? Theoretically speaking, it’s a difficult decision to make.

Skiz, I don't know if you've got ADHD. But everything you mentioned about habits was something I struggled with ADHD. From start to finish. The biggest resonance was when you said how when you're derailed, it's hard to keep up with the habit.

1:01:00 Yep. Please DO tell your audience that "I'm taking a few weeks vacation", so people know what's going on. People do like you to take a little time off. Xisuma went to New York, and spend a 2 hour plus livestream talking about it, showing pictures. It was great.
