The laser in the PS3 is just for reading the disc, so it is only good for up to 50mA, at most (more safe at around 30mA).

Forssa1 Dual lens PS3 sled found in newer models is capable of outputing more than 50mW - I cranked up mine at 100mA and burnt some plastic and ignited a match (ofc at this current lifespan of this diode is pretty limited).

I really enjoy that this isn't an electronics account that makes videos for those afraid of math. I enjoy what math can do for electronics design and how it can help. (Not to mention how it helps). You also don't make it all about it though, to reach the side of hobbyists who don't like it. They'll like it eventually though.

I am amazed you are not out there compared to other channels you teach so much and draw out diagrams detailing how you will connect resistors to pcb boards etc. Also showing the math you did to get the numericial value for how much electricity would be wasted is amazing.

+GreatScott! You should check the beam pattern of the laser diode. I had 8 laser pickups to play around with and killed every single one with ESD. Even while grounded with an esd wriststrap and earthed soldering iron. Those 405nm diodes are very fragile and even more sensitive to esd than other wavelengths. You should look at the beam pattern if its a constant bar of light. If not you most likely killed the diode. Dead laser diodes usually emit a random splitted pattern or even no light from front surface, just some reflection of the substrates sides. + they often emit a yellowish color on the sides when they are dead.
@AtmelKiller
@AtmelKiller 8 жыл бұрын
And your diode looks pretty dead in the Video. Do not exceed approx 50mA or it will die. Those diodes are only for reading and not burning discs. They usually have about 5mW of output power.

Great video; try to use the UV laser to cure some epoxy resin, or other UV curable resin, the chemical mechanism of IR and UV reactions in materials are way different, but remember the simple quantum relationship: Energy of a photon=Planck constant*wavelenght/velocity of light in vacuum.

I'm afraid you are mistaken about killing potentiometers. Usually, the issue is not dissipating too much power. The problem is driving too much current through the wiper. This can produce a very small, localized burn on the resistive element, and at that particular position the pot will appear to be dead.. The maximum safe current depends on the specific pot - but it's not usually very much.

I took 6 dvd players apart. At the end I managed to have just one laser diode that worked. Just why none worked except one, I have no idea. This is the only video that doesn't warn about shorting out the LED. He simply cuts the ribbon and use solderig iron and removes the tape. Then furthermore tries different connection pin to see which one lights up the LED. No concern about shorting anything.

It looks like the violet laser diode is damaged because the output is very dim. Also its possible that the playstation does contain a burning violet laser diode, it might be a read only laser diode that isn't able to burn things. I took apart one and the diode did work but it only puts out about 15mW or so not burning.

Those guys have no idea what they're talking about, blu-ray reader diodes can't output more than 5mW. You need a writer diode to burn. There is an exception though, the PHR-803 (iirc) found in the xbox360 drive that for some reason can be cranked up safely to around 100mW.

I really like your videos but I never got my head around why people call this "hacked". It's probably for recognition reasons, so people will click something thats got " hacked" in the title, even though you basically just salvaged some cool stuff. Turning the power supply on with two resistors and testing the diode is barely hacking (or modding) something. Even tho, just a random thought.
