The frame is in grave danger of catastrophic failure if you cut out the seat stays and leave the brake bridge.

The seat stays primarily carry a load from top to bottom. So the opposite ends of the stays are being compressed toward each other. So removing that brake bridge will hardly do anything. It'll be fine.

The frame becomes much more vulnerable without the wheel bolted in if you cut out the brake bridge but with the wheel bolted in the axle becomes the Third point of stability so as long as you're not riding around with an imaginary wheel on the back you should be fine👍😄
@ek85074 жыл бұрын
while i dont think there's any short term risk to the frame, its worth mentioning that this is potentially not worth doing on all frames; the brake bridge is welded on, which means that heat is applied to that area, changing the material strength and fatigue life. a failure on the back end, especially on the seat stay is typically not catastrophic. modification to bikes are always a "try at your own risk" deal. just make sure the next owners of the bike are aware of the same risks you, the modification maker, are. Really what i'm trying to say is: go for it, but be smart, and be ethical.

My first BMX bike, a Mongoose, had a removable rear brake bridge. It would loosen up and slide down and lock the rear tire. Tore it off and rode with only a front brake for the rest of my childhood.

I think you were spot on when talking about being met with negativity when you decide to head down the path less pedalled when it comes to bike mods. I can relate, I have been building a 2021 Giant Roam into a wide flared drop bar, gravel rambler with 650bx47 Wtb senderos on some shimano Mt500 27.5 wheels and a 11-40 11spd cassette running a 1x 42t from chain ring and using my older 5800 105 rear derailleur, 105 5800 2x11 sti shifters paired with Giants connect brake booster system that is then adapted to some tektro post mount disc brakes with 160mm rotors....eberyone said it couldn't be done but stay the path, do the research and you'll be surprised what is actually possible when you shed the negativity. Peace out my dude I thoroughly enjoy your content in your vudeos keep em coming!

The brake bridge is to take braking forces... not frame/riding forces... it transfers braking load to the seat stay. Removing it shouldn't be a problem! My track bike doesn't have a brake bridge anyway...

@SeargentFirestone4 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that with the upsurge of disc brake road bikes, brake bridges on seat stays are intentionally left out by design. And that's on carbon frames with significantly thinner tubes. This bike will be just fine!
@why30114 жыл бұрын
these were intentionally put in by design, do bike designers know what they're doing or not?
@SeargentFirestone4 жыл бұрын
No, it's just that people seem to misunderstand why they were put there in the first place. If you don't run a rear caliper break, there is no need for the seat stay bridge.

@RollinRat If we still talking about cutting out brake bridge, I think way in witch tubes are connected is a lot more important than frame material. If they simply welded to back of seat tube (like in poseidon), brake bridge add almost nothing to frame strenght. If they brazed to sides of seat tube (very common in old bikes) its may, or may not, suffer more from side loads.

Looks cooler like that. Never had a back brake but occasionally turn wheel around to the freewheel side if I'm going on a hilly ride and install a front brake. Everyone saying this looks “cool” or better is profoundly ignorant. I can’t believe anyone would destroy the structural integrity of a frame for looks, despite whatever that 0.02% thing says. No frame builder will skip on a brake bridge regardless, which is why you see undriilled bridge posts. This should be 100% disclaimed as to not try or emulate by others. If you need the larger tire clearance, get a frame designed for it. Saying this appreciation comes from “fear” and is a “world is ending philosophy” is insulting too.
@guycampbell52854 жыл бұрын
Structurally, all a brake bridge might do is increase transverse buckling limit if loads were different from one side to the other. Since this is a single tracked vehicle, this can only be possible to the limit of tire traction. Brake bridges were never installed for structural integrity, but to allow mounting of brakes. I agree no :(or few) frame builders" will skip them, as most frame builders do not have the ability to do stress analysis, and so must repeat what works. I do not see a brake bridge on English cycles one sided bike,

The double triangle frame design predates center-bolt mounted calliper brakes. Brake bridges are not structurally integral to the design of the standard double triangle frame. This is regardless of wether the frame is steel or aluminium. Plenty of frames have been made for 150 years, without them. Since you want to call others ignorant, i feel it’s worth pointing out that in this case, the ignorant one is you.
