Part of me chalks this up to corporate greed. Between resort fees (for providing almost no real resort perks), daily parking fees, inflated room prices, less bang for your buck Vegas casinos are making a lot of profit. But won't pony up to tighten their cyber security?

Didn't you watch/listen to the clip? You can spend unlimited budget on hardware/software security. Attackers can still breach your network with the help of duped employee(s).

Not protecting themselves, it's more like protecting your customers. This isn't the first time it's happened. I got an enailnabout 6 years ago, it advised me to change my email in the MGM site due to a possible back. Remember, customers personal info is what they are stealing

@@ohcharlie428yep, I was at a casino around 3AM while the employees were manually resetting each slot machine bank. Lol. I can only imagine how tight those were going to be after they rebooted😂. So yeah, I went home😂😂.

not just slot machines, but the entire MGM network was breached.

The slot machines are not connected to the internet but the back-end servers that the slots send info to have to be taken down in case of a security breach. With most of the servers down, things like electronic pass-keys for the rooms and slot machines, will not be operational until the servers are running again.

I hope something is done with the management responsible for the company's Disaster Recovery Plan, and they audit their past yearly table top exercises and validate what they said they could do in a DR situation would actually work.

That will be a real quick and short audit. I doubt they have any of that that isn’t boiler plate and just enough to squeak by an audit. The real test is now when an incident happens. MGM gets a big fat F on their DR plan. I doubt there were ever any table tops. Also no Phishing Email training or monthly testing. MGM Compliance Leadership laughed at the fact Cosmopolitan was doing Phishing tests. Shameful. If the whole security team doesn’t get fired, MGM is hopeless.

@@williemo44 Which is so sad to hear if MGM management was so relaxed at that. Working in corporate IT for 25 years, I never took this type of work lightly. I know most employees hated the yearly exercises we did, and the anti phishing training, and quarterly surprised campaigns. But look at what happened now. Hopefully they take things seriously, employees will have to jump through hoops but look at the cost to the company after this incident.

The employee failed, I am positive that they have an internal SOP for not giving access/password resets/VPN tokens to unverified users no matter who they claim to be. Imagine being that person.

“That person” probably makes less than $20/hr, has access to VPN tokens but no access to company health/dental/vision insurance AND still qualifies for food stamps? Or, “that person” with a thick foreign accent, part-time contracted cheap labor, IT help desk guy named “John”? Please, MGM brought this on themselves😂😂😂.

@@Jujubean9795 I don't care how much they make. I made more than $20/hr and I worked the same L1 position for a cold dead inside company that makes billions of dollars year just like MGM. I worked with people from all over the world, including thick foreign accent countries.

SOP is just a PDF with an empty suit’s signature. That PDF isn’t going to help anyone after a breach. The C-Suite let’s IT leadership run a dictatorship and doesn’t adequately supervise them. Many policies are broken in MGM IT. If someone did an audit of that they would find many violations. A good friend of mine that worked there for over 20 years, 5 years to go until retirement was let go because of his age. How MGM can get away with that is beyond me. But I guess being the largest employer in Nevada and one of the largest tax payers, has its perks.
