This was when he had long hair etc. I knew the face from somewhere but couldn't place it the whole time I was eating breakfast. Finally he and whoever he was with got up from their booth and started to walk outside and I figured it out. So I said casually to my friend I was eating with "I think we were just sitting across from Macaulay Culkin this whole time", and I don't know if he heard me or what, because at that instant he turns around, sees me looking at him, makes this chest-bumping motion as if to say "yeah it's me, so what?" and then flashes me a double thumbs-up as he gets in his car. Totally made my day haha. Seems like a really chill dude.

17:22 It's a reference to William Gibson. One of the founding authors of the cyberpunk genre. 17:26 Those books are real. They're called the Rainbow Series. I think a lot of appreciation of this film is lost on you because it's an hour and a half ester egg intended for an audience that knows something about computer science. Is it corny? Yes. Are the graphics way over the top? Yes. But disassembling binaries is not visually exciting. The execs wanted more than us just staring at a command prompt and a text editor, so of course they had to put in crazy visuals.

Absolutely. This is a ridiculous movie. But it is chock full of real hacker / tech culture references. Seen through a drug-hazed Hollywood filter. So yeah - the guys might mock the term "handle" but that's a real thing (albeit more from BBS culture than Internet culture at the time). It's just that everything is portrayed in such an outlandish way that it seems unbelievable. I'm not sure if this film mocks hacker culture or tries too hard to celebrate it.

arandomnamegoeshere I dont think they were mocking hacker culture - the movie contains way too many legitimate references to hacker culture to be mocking it. I think they figured out early on that they were not going to do a serious movie, and everyone simply rolled with it, piling on the sillyness and cheesiness in order to make the movie as entertaining as possible.

I think this film actually appeals more to people outside the US where the defining counter-culture was actually that sort of "cyber-rave" culture presented in the film. For example the old rave scene of the 90s and early 00s absolutely 100% dressed like the characters in Hackers, the music in the film was the same music that was played at raves, you would literally have computers set up at raves and people would be doing hacking shit (it's literally how Julian Assange started) and I've actually met tonnes of ravers that were 100% like Lillard/Cereal. The people behind the scenes of the film like the writer, director etc were British, so the film actually makes way more sense if you're not looking at it from an American perspective, but UK/EU.

to be fair, this movie was pretty accurate on how the "Scene" was back in 94-95. the techno babble was alright, and as a stylized visual representation of what looking through a file system for data, it is better than looking at a guy throwing commands in to a *-nix terminal for 10 minutes :) I love the movie hackers, its a beautiful time capsule.. of before the internet became widespread, and the script kiddies took over :p

Yeah, I think Mac's description of the music in the movie was a little off. He said it was all kinda techno and had a wanna-be Rage Against The Machine vibe. Orbital's music doesn't fit into either of those categories. One of my pet peeves is how pretty much all electronic music in the 90's was categorized as "techno". Also, I recall the entire soundtrack being electronic and nothing at all sounded like Rage Against The Machine type of music.
@chano12835 жыл бұрын
I believe the “Rage” sounding band that Mac is referring to is the band you see playing live towards the end of the movie. They were Urban Dance Squad, a Dutch band. Also, the soundtrack features like, half of the Prodigy album, “Music for the Jilted Generation”. Yes, annoying when all electronic music is called Techno. Adults, am I right? 🙄 🤣

As a 20 year old Raver & Hacker when this movie came out, it actually very slyly captured elements of a subculture that *ACTUALLY* existed at the time. Those costumes were what ravers were wearing, people really were hacking systems like that, Phone Phreaking was a real thing. The running joke at the time was that we should start hacking in PVC clothing instead of sweatpants. There is a lot of hilarious hyperbole in the film, but as a historical document it captures a moment that really existed.

"Handle" was the correct term .. thats what it was called in the BBS days :) Reeally .. its a perfect movie, because it absolutely nails the spirit of the culture back then, at least in your main nerd town hacker culture.
