The flat panel projection TV models that use DLP mirrors are also using that kind of lamp. I collect the components each time I find such TV in garbage. They have a distinctive slanted back side, made of thick plastic while the older projection TV with square shape, all pressed wood, use 3 black white CRT to project the 3 colors. The lamp need 60 Hz to avoid destruction by internal ultrasonic resonance. The board that power the lamp works like a class D audio amplifier (high power car radio). It takes as input 200 to 360 volt DC, chop this with a PWM signal at roughly 50 KHz alternating the pulse width smoothly at 60 Hz. It is equivalent to a standard switching mode power supply which would be trying to follow a reference voltage which happen to be 60 Hz sinusoidal. The start voltage is many thousand of volt. The steady operation is around 100 volt. After the arc, the voltage is about 130 volt and drop slowly to 100 volt as the lamp warm up (stable after 5 minutes). The arc lamp, like any mercury/sodium and fluorescent, is a negative resistance. The more current you provide, the lower the voltage measured by a voltmeter. Using a varactor (auto-transformer) to increase both current and voltage delivered, the volt meter really measure lower and lower voltage as the current is increased. It is counter intuitive... how the lamp know how much current to absorb without sensing the voltage? If the current is slowly decreased, the voltage measured increase, up to 150 volts. Decreasing more create a random flicker, then the lamp turn off. It need another strike of 2000 volt to start. Another way to start the lamp is to copy the method of xenon stroboscopic lamp. I gently installed a large spring (any wires - raw, without insulation - rolled a few turns around the lamp works as well. I use a plasma lamp as non lethal high voltage generator An alligator clip is connected to the spring and rolled around the plasma lamp. Safety precaution that I found the hard way: A plasma lamp, even separate a few inches from your setup, is able to induce DC in a high voltage capacitor. The microwave oven capacitors all have an internal bleeding resistor which counter act this self charging effect. But the 10 kilo-volt capacitor I used sometime would hold a charge for months. A "small" value of 0.3 micro-farad at 10 kv destroy any arc lamp in a single discharge. The pieces of glass can be heard bouncing in the room, never to be seen again.

A couple of clarifications 1- The resistor from +5V to CN2, Pin 4, is 330 Ohms (although not needed) and 2- The two pins of CN4 on the power supply board must be shorted (that connector goes to a temperature "fuse" in series with the AC).

Thank you! Worked also with my w600+ 👍 I have used the 12V supply with an random 5.1k resistor to drive the optocoupler. To switch on the 385V from the main power supply I had to connect the blue "Main" cord to 12V. For this I used a switch. So, if I connect line power the 12V are active and the fans, I connected directly, are blowing. If I turn on the switch the lamp turns on. If I turn off the switch the lamps turns off and the fans continue to blow. It's also possible to switch on again... Greatings from germany Steven

As you took the 5V supply from PSU going to the common Anode Pin3) of ballast. in that case, you cannot put into chassis the ground of PSU and Ballast right? because your 5V from PSU will be grounded by the Common of Ballast board.

This is great. I wonder what will happen if you fool the lamp and return it inside the project (and fool the projector too, of course). what are the dangers? I have a projector whose lamp comes on some times but most of the time it fail to start and the projector decide to go back to standby. I think because it sometime work (just for few minutes) then the lamp can be forced on by tooling the ballast, and the mother board can also be fooled by shoring some lines. But I have been asking myself what will happen for instance if the lamp fan fail, and the projector has no way to control the lamp? Is the lamp capable of melting some other parts of the projector before it dies by overheating or it will die before it destroy other parts of the projector? Is it possible that it can melt thing in there in the first place?

Thanks! I didn't test the voltage, but the initial strike voltage would be considerably higher than the working voltage. This is true for all discharge lamps. You may be able to increase the lamp output a bit by adjusting voltage, but I'd suspect that would shorten the life of the lamp.

Hello Kerry. What can affect the flickering (pulsation) of the lamp of epson projectors? Flickering occurs in the "eco" mode, switching to the "normal" mode stabilizes the lamp and it does not flicker. The incoming voltage from 100-240 V +-10% can somehow affect this flickering process or the power supply and ballast are still within these 100-240 V?
@retropcs88 Жыл бұрын
Eco mode runs the lamp at lower power, so either the lamp is worn out and can't maintain an arc with the lower power, or the power supply is failing

Hey guys I have a very unique situation. I have a really old 35mm movie theater projector. It takes a 2k watt xenon lamp but I don’t need something that bright. My room isn’t the size of an auditorium! (Btw people need to know about the dangers of UV damage to their eyes or explosion hazards on all of these lamps). I want to find an old office projector and tweak it so I can take out the optics and just use the lamp as my illumination source. I can’t use LED due to the flicker and the color temperature of these lamps vastly outperforms any tungsten. It would be nice to have a condenser lens although it’s not necessary since the film goes through very fast. I just need to have the lamp always stay on. I actually don’t mind having the whole unit in the lamphouse of the projector. The projector lamphouse itself that 2 massive cage fans in it. I have no idea how the igniter for the xenon works and I couldn’t the original xenon to strike anyway. Not to mention xenon lamps are even more dangerous! But I don’t have enough power going to it to work for the lamp. Is there anyone out there that might be able to guide me along with this projector? I would really appreciate it even though I know this video is old. I’ll probably make video about how I did it since there is literally nothing about this. Thanks!

No, I don't have the schematics. It's not just a simple HV power supply as the ballast works by first producing a strike voltage that is high enough to light the bulb and then the voltage drops significantly afterwards while maintaining a high current.
