This is a great film about war - but I wouldn't call it a war film. I used to run the Medicinema at Headley Court and we screened this to an auditorium full of Afghanistan veterans - all recovering from some kind of injury sustained over there as they use to go to Headley Court for rehab. Those that could stood and applauded at the end and there were a few tears due to the realistic portrayal during the battle scenes getting a bit close to the knuckle. The only other film we screened that got an ovation like that from roughy toughy soldiers was Sing Street believe it or not. Yes us military types knows our films!

Sorry about the ongoing expense Jon. This one is a good example of a 4K being superior to its Blu-ray counterpart and I would really like to know exactly why it is immediately perceptibly superior this time because it really shouldn't be given that it's basically a computer file that's been put through a conversion process to fit on a 4K Blu-ray. Surely the original Blu-ray was a conversion from the same computer file? The end result looks to be more than just superiority due to HDR this time. John.

This movie is pretty good. I would describe it as a two part story, with the first half being a love story, reminiscent of typical Frank Capra style from the 1940s, and the second half of the movie being a very realistic battle scene, with great stunts/effects and easy to follow the action (some action scenes in other movies are too choppy/blurry to understand what is happening). My favorite part is that it's based on a true story, and a real hero from a very important war... somebody that most people have never heard of, who saved dozens of lives, at great risk to his own. I think this movie will mainly appeal to people who have strong principles and good character.

We put the Blu-ray on immediately after watching the 4K Gary and it was so boring to look at by comparison. I expect it was a different master file to the 4K and not as much care had gone into getting it out on Blu-ray because it really shouldn't have been so different as it wasn't a film requiring a cine transfer and started out as a computer file in the first place. I should have made that point in the video now that I've thought of it. John.

Evening John, great review. I loved Hacksaw Ridge also. A truly great film and has a lot of heart running through it. Super happy to see Solaris. It’s a wonderful film and it’s miles ahead of the Clooney version. If you like Solaris I can highly recommend Stalker, and really shows Tarkovsky at his visual best. I’ve recently watched Lost Boys on UHD and it was a revelation over the old Blu-ray I had previously. Especially the HDR grading is lovely. The wife and I also watched Poltergeist and The Shining on UHD and both looked terrific. Have a great evening and weekend. Martin.

I'm really looking forward to Solaris Martin but it may have to wait for a few days as I have a few to get through right now. Sometimes it's nice to save the best for last. I haven't seen The Lost Boys ever as I'm not really the biggest fan of vampire films but I might take a look at the 4K now that it's appeared. Poltergeist is another matter though as I own a full length Super 8 print and that is one of the best 'Scope prints ever issued on the gauge which tells us that the original shoot and camera stock was of the highest quality and that is why the 4K is getting such good feedback. If I do eventually get the 4K of that at least I'll be able to tell how closely the film print and 4K match up for colour and density. I think we get a bit hung up on all this though because different print runs produced slight variations of results so no two formats are ever likely to match exactly all the way through.. The Shining is a fabulous 4K disc and that is because the original shoot and film stock was of the highest standard. John.

Hi John, thanks for the review, this was one of the first 4k uhd films I purchased. Off topic I am fascinated by the VistaVision system, I have not seen the Hitchcock films produced in 4K UHD. I have a few blu-rays; such as Gunfight at OK Corral, The Searchers and Vertigo and they look fantastic in 2k with beautiful depth and colour, I know Vertigo has been produced in 4k, but would love to see these and others such as Grand Prix in 4k which I think would look stunning. Further off topic, purchased The Seven ups, blu-ray, which amongst the extras includes the super 8 cut down presentation of the film. Keep up the sterling work, it's appreciated.
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 2 жыл бұрын
There hasn't been enough of Super 8 on disc releases. Some of the 400ft reel cut downs are amazing and give you the whole story and a feeling that you've seen the film in about 17 minutes. I learned a lot about editing from watching Super 8 films over and over again. I mentioned VistaVision because it encapsulates what is happening with some videos that are shot at a higher resolution and then output at 2K. Essentially VistaVision was the same because there were very few genuine VistaVision prints struck and very few cinemas around the world that could actually project a VistaVision horizontal print. It was invented to produce superior imagery on the actual shoot and then that would shrink down and generate superior standard 35mm release prints. Grand Prix was a 65mm shoot for 70mm release, primarily as a faux Cinerama 'roadshow release'. With a Blu-ray that looks that good we don't really need a 4K release but I suppose the same could be said of a lot of large format films that have been released on Blu-ray. I don't think Hacksaw Ridge is in the same league as all the titles you've mentioned but it's good enough and that is all any of us could ask for a home video disc. By the way, my friend and boss at the British Film Collectors Conventions has a 35mm Technicolor print of Gunfight At The OK Corral. It's rather nice! John.

I suspect Mel Gibson has had a bit of a hard time over Braveheart and perhaps The Patriot but I've never seen The Patriot owing to the blatant propaganda in Braveheart. I liked Braveheart as a fictional film but so many people considered it to be factually accurate that I haven't been able to ever watch it again. The true story would have made a great film so it really didn't need to be fictionalized. I liked Carlito's Way so I'm looking forward to it. I think I've liked every Brian De Palma film I've seen including Mission To Mars which I thought was pretty terrific up until the hokey alien appears for the climax. I need to see this film, I’m sure the transfer is great, not to mention the great sound on it. I don’t usually watch too many war films since I find them a bit heavy, but I’m always up for a great film. Drive on 35mm was lovely, image was not focused properly, which is a shame. The Color grade very closely resembled the 4K disc, which is always nice to hear. The sound was phenomenal, great bass track. Have a great day John

The remake of Solaris was a classy film so I've wanted to see the Russian original since I first saw that remake. If I were you, I'd hang on for the 35mm screening to see it first as there's nothing quite like watching a film to see a film. What a shame that Drive wasn't focused properly. Do you think that was the print or was the projector slightly blurry? Some was films can be educational and this is one of them. So besides being a great film there is something to learn from what is on screen. I didn't exactly need to re-learn the horror of the fighting against the Japanese in World War II but if a new generation got to learn a little about it then that has to be a good thing. For all that they did during the war, it's wonderful that Japan is now such a good ally to all of us Anglo nations and it proves that even countries that have been subject to the most vile regimes can be brought back to civilization in the end. It was the British Empire (i.e. Britain, Australia and all the rest of what is now the Commonwealth) that first turned the Japanese around in what was then known as Burma (Myanmar today). John.

Hacksaw Ridge is one of those films that wants you to cry, I almost thought I was watching the real captain America! I really enjoyed it, but it’s Andrew Garfield who elevates this film - one of those rare films that an actor can carry a film on his shoulders (literally!). Carlito’s Way is incredible - so many great characters. And Sean Penn, John Leguizamo & Viggo Mortensen are terrific. Can’t wait for your review, John.

Ow boy 😄I just heard you mentioning my name there. It is very kind of you. I hope you like the movie. I would describe the experience of watching it, as: watching paintings alone in a big gallery, while it is a cold spring morning and a working day outside. I love the other "Solaris" movie very much! Everyone in it is fabulous. The soundtrack is absolutely incredible - one of the greatest ever. You can put it next to Vangelis' "Blade Runner" soundtrack - not as versatile, but it is also a comfort food for soul, mind and heart. I highly recommend you watching a black and white film "Good Night and Good Luck". It is a debut of George Clooney as a director. I'd not heard of 'Good Night & Good Luck'. 'Hacksaw Ridge' made me wonder about how many great films there are that I haven't yet seen. Sounds like the George Clooney film is another one. We watched a film called 'Closing The Ring' from 2007 last night. That's another very good film that we hadn't come across before and directed by Richard Attenborough so I really should have seen it years ago. I put the Solaris disc in yesterday to check the english subtitles were visible within the picture area and not off the bottom of the screen in the black bars which is a common mistake when mastering a film onto video. Fortunately, they are in the right place so we won't have to watch it with the masking all cock-eyed. Criterion get a lot of praise for great work when mastering a film onto a video format and have done since the LaserDisc days. This one starts with the opening titles weaving quite badly which denotes it being taken from a worn print. I don't understand why no one thought to correct this weaving on the titles as it's not a bit job by any means. I could have shown them if they were flummoxed by it. Oh well, it doesn't really matter, it's just odd that Ciriterion wouldn't have corrected it given their reputation. I expect to thoroughly enjoy the film irrespective how knackered the print may have been from which the video was made. Now that I think about it, I believe the booklet states that it was done from a low contrast print struck from the original camera negative which seems a little odd. John.

@@moviecollector5920 'Good Night & Good Luck' is a wonderful story, in which you get to spend time with remarkable individuals from everyday life and experience their emotions. Please, let me know what you think of it, once you watch it. Criterion does really nice restorations and so does RUSCICO - which did a wonderful restoration of War and Peace: up to 5 voiceovers and over a dozen subtitles, great picture restoration (DVD quality). I don't know why they left the weaving untouched. I am not sure what is left from the original film reals. It might be that the originals are damaged or lost. I will let you know if I find out. Watch both "Solaris" films. They are two absolutely different stories. In Hollywood version, only names and few plot details are still from Stanislav Lem's novel. Lem did not see the US version, but did not like Tarkovsky's version. He envisioned something with a far greater budget - like Kubrick's "Odyssey 2001". He also did not like Star Trek. He said: "Everyone is equal, wearing the same mass produced clothing - no versatility... It all looks too familiar - Communist." I guess, he did not really grasp the idea of budget constraint and thought that sci-fi movies did not struggle with low budget. In the amazing "Twilight Zone" people are mostly wearing ordinary clothing - great budget saving. I have never heard of "Closing the Ring". It looks like a great story of a tragic love. Great cast! @@dmitripopov8570 Star Trek is a sort of Marxist utopia really but I don't think it was ever set up to be so, it was just an idea for a science fiction series for television and it worked out okay in the end. As time has gone on and the occasional subject of how the Starfleet 'employees' are remunerated has come up it's become increasingly obvious that no one is paid and it's simply an aspiration society where everyone is looking to get on as best they can. Sadly, this country has proved that if you pay people well for doing nothing then that is what they will do which rather confirms that Star Trek is indeed a fantasy. There are some damned fine stories covered though and some of them from the follow-up series Star Trek The Next Generation would have made fabulous big screen films such as 'Cause & Effect' and 'Yesterday's Enterprise'. A fan favourite from that series is a two parter 'The Best of Both Worlds' which essentially spawned a sequel on the big screen as it was the second film from The Next Generation crew called 'First Contact'. We'll probably be watching 'Carlito's Way' this evening. I don't suppose the review video will be very popular but there's not exactly much else that's come out lately that would be popular other than 'Poltergeist' and I don't really want to see that on video as I have it on film. That was a bit of a stressful time with KZbin but with some help from fellow film enthusiast and subscriber, Dmitri Popov, I got onto the on-line live chat help with a KZbin support person and he established the problem was being caused by Google. There was nothing to indicate to me that it was Google causing the trouble. I suspect KZbin get this a lot but there's nothing they're able to do about it. I was actually feeling prepared to give up. I feel like I could still do with a break actually but I have a British Film Collectors Convention to organize on April 29th and that was a big reason for starting this channel. www.bfcc.biz I hope you like that steelbook and have a great film night with Hacksaw Ridge Alex. I suspect Hacksaw Ridge is a bit of an unknown for a lot of film enthusiasts Frank as no one ever mentioned it to me and yet it's a great film. Another astounding directorial accomplishment by Mel Gibson, of course, supported tremendously by a talented team of actors and technicians. It’s a fierce and inspiring work and stands up to repeat viewings. Looking forward to Gibson’s follow up to Passion of the Christ, The Resurrection, which reportedly takes place during those three days between the crucifixion and the resurrection. It reportedly includes Jesus’s descent into Hell, where he must defeat death once and for all on Satan’s turf. Gibson will surely not disappoint in creating an inspirational and gut wrenching spectacle.

I hope you like Mel Gibson's new film. I'll probably take a lot of persuading to see that one as it really isn't my kind of subject. Apocalypto is the one that most people have told me about but after Braveheart I rather stayed away from anything else he had directed. I enjoyed Braveheart but only as a work of fiction which is what it was. Such a shame it was portrayed and largely accepted as historically accurate. John.

@@moviecollector5920 I'm a sucker for anything Gibson has directed, regardless of my feelings on the subject matter. Apocalypto is another masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned. @@1165mac The one that I've always been advised to steer clear of is The Patriot. After Braveheart, I didn't really need much persuading but it may not be as bad as people have told me down the years. Dud you get on with it okay or does it take anti-British sentiment too far? John.

@@moviecollector5920 It's been awhile since seeing The Patriot, but I do remember it being full of caricatures and obviously not to be taken seriously in any historic value. I remember there being a sadistic British general who is pitted against Mel Gibson's character right from the beginning, but my scant knowledge of the Revolutionary War prevents me from making a judgement call on whether the film itself is purposefully anti-British. Gibson didn't direct it, and it doesn't carry his trademark production style for sure.

@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 2 жыл бұрын
The ridge does appear to be rather exaggerated which was a bit silly but you can't blame film makers for wanting to make something cinematic. The premise of the film follows an almost entirely historically accurate path with a few things amalgamated from other battles and events but essentially correct. This is unlike most American made war films but there have been a few over the years that haven't had to deviate too much. You need to watch it again Espen now that you know you are watching a true story. It probably appeared 'cheesy' because you thought it was all a load of nonsense. I don't blame you either because Mel Gibson's film Braveheart, which was entertaining and very well made but an almost complete work of fiction. John.
