Very nice capture from the firewood pile. I have just ordered a Coronet Herald to be shipped here to NS aka, Nova Scotia. I am not using the hollow legs as I see yours is so equipped. I will fasten mine to a 2" spruce platform and build a 3/4" MDF shelving unit beneath, where I can place as many sandbags as will fit for vibration damping. 'Sides, the legs were quite expensive. My query is about the degree of moisture in a large block of wood of any species to take from log form to finished bowl, without allowing for an EMC dry. A log of that size must contain considerable moisture deep inside. After final turning and finishing, surely it must warp and perhaps even open up microscopic cracks not seen by the naked eye beforehand.

Gratz on the lathe you going to love it. the log I used is around ½ year old but yes it was still very wet 40+%... but I found that if you turn it to around 5 to 9 mm thickness it doesn’t always warp when turning end grain .. about the wood you can’t say it goes for all types some tend to crack/warp more than others, but when finish turning wet always go as thin as possible to minimize the warp/crack. most of the time I see the warping as a part of the beauty of handmade bowls and most of the time I welcome it .. I do also turn many bowls and other stuff where I rough turn and then have it in the kiln for 3 to 5 weeks, but it depends of what I plan to do, the few time I plan it 😂 .. most of the time where I Live I can turn around 13 to 15 % without problem. Hope that answered you question else feel free to write again .. Thank you for watching .. stay safe and have a great day 😀

@@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP I'm renewing my love affair with turning as it's been over 45 years. I turned fenceposts for Glanmore House in Belleville, ON on a Wadkin RS 8, i.e., 8' between centres! I can't even remember how we got it in the building! hahaha Here in NS, the white birch is as hard as the yellow birch was in ON. I will be scouring the woods with my chain saw looking for delectables suitable for tuning. Thanks for this explanation on moisture. I shall experiment as NS is typically wet although this climate crisis is changing that too. btw, the Herald seems superior to the Laguna 1216 and the Oneway 1224.

Hi Kim, that turned out well in the end. I had some spalted birch this past weekend that wouldn't stay on the lathe, 1st the tenon and then the recess broke so I will leave it for a little before picking it up again. I am glad you stuck with it. Keep turning, Rob.

@@WOODTURNINGBYBRANDSTRUP I kept the piece and the video, I am trying not to be angry with a piece of wood :) I spent a number of days drying and prepping the blank. I will now either use it as filler for resin casting, I just received my pressure pot, or use a glue block to turn it and, like you, show how to overcome obstacles.

Lovely. It seemed that your tool rest was not very close to the bowl while hollowing, yet you did not seem to have a problem with catches, whereas I need to be as close as possible. Could you tell the dimension of the cross section of your hollowing tool and the depth of the bowl. Thanks. Jim, Montana Wood Art

Hi Jim, I use the hope 12 mm hollower and the tool it self is flat except for the tip where the curve is .. that part is oval/round If I have that part on the tool rest I cant control the tool, so the tool rest have to be a bit longer from the piece.. it is an amazing hand held hollower.. and not that expensive if you make the handel tour self hopewoodturning.co.uk/tools-handles/hope-carbide-cutting-tools/101/12mm-hss-hook-tool?c=5.. hope that answer you question ? else feel free to contact me again here or on mail :-) .. Thank toy very much for watching and for the comment.. I really appreciate it.. I am very happy about the lathe, I need to refill the legs with sand but I have turned som pretty unstable bowls on it and it handle it great for a lathe in this size.. and it go over the side and take op to 54 cm in diameter .. the lathe is my first so I dont have any to compare it with .. and I haven't tryed my new old lathe yet :-) again thanks for the comment and watching ..
