And just to add a little more because I'm a huge fan of Greek mythology. As many people already said, she is more than just the goddess of the Night, one of the children of Chaos, the first and original primordial entity. Before the Olympians and the titans, there were th primordial beings. Nyx the night is sister to Erebus the shadows, Ether the light, Hemera the day and Gaia the Earth. There were other primordial beings but I'm not sure if they were related.

Hades is an incredible game and has one of the best stories in gaming (which is unique for the Roguelike genre since they generally don't have much in terms of story). In fact it is thus far the only game to win a Nebula award for its writing. The Nebula Award is THE major award for excellence in writing within the scifi and fantasy genre and is usually only awarded to books, TV, and film. They created a games category in part because of Hades. I couldn't put the game down during Covid and I think you 2 would love the story.

If you do plan on going into this game, just know that you will probably not win for a while, and that's ok because it just means you unlock more of the story each time you play and can get more permanent powers, also if you didn't know a rogue-like game is a genre of game where the central point is along the lines of starting off weak, getting stronger through progression, and losing sends you back to step 1, though this one is actually what some would call a rogue-LITE because it offers permanent powers that help a lot if you get access to them, like a revive once per run.

Hades is a perfect blend of digestible and compelling. It saves after every room of progress, so if you've got just ten minutes, fight your way through a couple of rooms. If you've got an hour, do a run or two. If you've got an evening, keep throwing yourself into it and you'll get a decent little chunk of the story. I cannot say enough good things about this game. Zagreus is endlessly charming, his interactions with the rest of the characters are really fun, the combat is riveting and Darren Korb's soundtrack absolutely slays- pun intended. I was already a Supergiant fan, but this was probably their crowning achievement... so far. Can't wait to see where Hades 2 takes us.

I have been an avid gamer ever since the day my uncle brought over DOOM on a hard diskette in the 90s. I grew up with Nintendo and Sega and became a PC gamer that still dips into the console world as an adult. In all my years I will stand by the statement that Hades is one of the most phenomenal gaming experiences of my entire life and I have yet to tire of it. I still frequently go back and up my heat rating for the next level of challenge. It's that good. A game deserving of the absolute highest praise and Hades 2 is by far my most highly anticipated release.

Hades has everything. Gameplay, story, characters and music, and in particular it manages to merge them together. You won't find much ludo-narrative dissonance in this game. This is about as close to perfection that I've ever seen a game be. There are games with an amazing story (albeit not that many, it's still a weak point of gaming imo), or gameplay that's even better thought out than Hades (although Hades' gameplay is already incredible), but I don't think I've seen a game just combine all the elements at such a high level as Hades does.

Considering how intrigued Bethany was, I cannot strongly enough suggest you guys also react to No Clip's documentary about Hades' development. It's a fascinating multi-part doc where they had the cooperation of Supergiant Games all throughout the development of Hades and since it was a collaborative effort, they were conscious about what they spoke, that is to say the documentary does not contain any story spoilers beyond what you already know from trailers.

I had picked this game up with basically no idea what is was, and found an experience I will never forget. Despite it being about gods and monsters of the underworld, everything feels natural and flows through gameplay and story better than anything I've ever seen before. The questlines don't feel intrusive or like you're going out of your way to do them, they're simply on your path and each of them feels satisfying to complete. Despite you going through the same places over and over, it never felt stale since the gods and upgrades you encounter are always randomized and changes your playstyle every time. Best dungeon crawler I've ever played and cannot wait to play 2.

The game is fairly short, but the length comes from the difficulty, the fact that youre meant to die and trying again and again. Rogue likes are meant to be played multiple times as theyre fairly difficult but have some sort of overall progression. So the game itself is short but its packed with content as it assumes youll be dying again and again and again. One of the best of its kind highly recommend

Hades is a fantastic roguelike. One of the pinnacles of the genre. The story also unfolds over multiple winning runs so theres always a reason to keep going and keep winning. Its like winning rewards you with a new episode of story. Every time you die you'll also come back and there will be somethin new in the house to check out and plenty of people to talk to. Roguelikes are difficult but they are LEARNABLE. The more you play the better you get and with most Roguelikes including Hades there are permanent upgrades to make your life easier. The story of Hades centers around Hades' son Zagreus as he attempts to fight his way out of the Underworld. The Gods of Olympus send down boons to help you on your journey.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames I’m doing you a solid by saying it, lol - the game rewards failure (and even success, but I won’t say more on that) by dripfeeding you further plot progression every time you loop. Even “winning” is not the end. Even *the ending* is not the end. And it’s all 100% voice acted with characters you’re likely already familiar with, but you’ll have an entirely new degree of love for due to how this game’s tale recontextualizes some of the most well-trodden stories and tropes in the history of western media. This game is a real masterclass on all fronts. And its sequel isn’t even finished yet, but still managing to equal its predecessor, which means the finished product is likely going to surpass the already mythic (heh) footprint made by the original. tl;dr Ken and Bethany, *play it*

Nyx is an ancient primal goddess one of the very first to spring forth from the primal chaos. There is barely anything said about her in greek myth other then her being the Goddess of night and surposedly being so fearsome that even Zeus did not dare anger her. The characters in this game range from very well known greek gods to more obscure ones, especially the ones in the main hub arent particularely well known aside from big man Hades himself. Our main Character Zagreous is basically a total blank slate in the orriginal greek myths that we know of, only mentioned in passing as a minor death deity, far less important than the likes of Hades himself and the other deathgods under him like Thanatos and Hypnos (death and sleep)... So with barely any lore written on him the devs where free to turn him into whatever character they wanted thus they made him Hades's rebellious bratty son who wants to get out of the underworld.

Hades is incredible. I've been a huge fan of Supergiant Games since their first game, Bastion. They've always done great stories through out their games and were always praised for their work but Hades was the game that really blew up for everyone for such a success that it was. It has great gameplay, beautiful soundtrack, incredible story, all wrapped into this love letter of a game. I think you guys would really enjoy it. Rogue-likes can be daunting at first for some people because of difficulty but Hades does such a great job at it. Dying is part of the game, you get new dialogues, you meet new characters and improve along the way. The further you go, the more you want to learn about the story, hence the more you want to play. It's easily one of my favorite games of all time.

Hades is technically a rogue-lite since it has meta progression. Means you grow stronger even if you fail instead of starting from scratch. Supergiant Games is know for this type of game and for adding a in depth story. Hades is the first game that gets a sequel. Can wait to see more. The game is a make your own difficulty kinda deal and the hardest challange was beaten early August of 2023. The game has different dialoge for the endboss encounter depending on which god blessed you, how often you showed up etc. There is even an extra dialoge if you reach and or beat the endboss on your first run of a fresh save file. The first run is build as a tutorial and you are supposed to die at some point. BUt if you manage to get through you get rewarded which is a nice touch.

Definitely would recommend playing it if you get the chance! It is a rogue-like, so you're meant to die and start all over. There are progression systems that make each successive run easier, on top of just experimenting and learning for yourself. As far as length is concerned, it won't take too long to beat. That being said, beating the game isn't the end. You will find that each time you "beat" the game, the game divulges more story for you, which gives you more incentive to keep playing. So you can kind of quit when you feel like it, but in order to get the full story, you will be beating the game many times. I will say that you will absolutely love the characters and how they are portrayed/voiced in this game lol. It's on another level.

Hades is a great game, and a good entry level for Rogue-lites, if you're not familiar with those. Basically, you're supposed to start a run, get as far as you can, then likely die, at which point you start back in a hub zone of sorts and can prepare for your next attempt. Each time you do you gain a little more experience to level up some abilities permanently, but the majority of the powers you gained in the previous run will be lost, forcing you to gain new powers each attempt. Each run takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Once you get a little stronger and gain more knowledge of the enemies and threats awaiting you you'll start to progress a little further, honing what powers you want to aim for to form a more powerful build and combo different skills together to help you survive longer, until you eventually succeed, but success doesn't mean the game is over. Your first successful run will likely come after about 30-50 attempts, unless you're really good, but it takes many successes to get the full story. The game will also throw the odd curve ball at you, like different bosses and unexpected encounters. There's also a TON of characters and even more dialogue, making it worth your time to talk to everyone you can between runs and you'll encounter other characters in the middle of each run as well, with new dialogue in each new encounter. Seriously the amount of voice acting that went into this game is insane and all of it is brilliant. There's a ton of things to unlock, loads to see and do, the combat is fast paced, hard to master and very satisfying when you do. And if you get really good, you can even increase the difficulty, making bosses have new attacks and abilities, changing the kinds of threats you face and forcing you to experience a whole new game almost, all to further test your skills and grow your character faster and unlock even more stuff. The sequel looks like it'll be just as good too.

Very good game, roguelikes are one of my favorite genre with the Binding of Isaac being my highest time in game of all time. This lacks all of the variance, synergistic chaos and content in tBoI, but it's got tighter and more refined design and is probably a good jumping in point for new players of roguelikes. Plus it's stunning from an art perspective. SuperGiant make pretty games but Hades is something else and it did so well that this will be their first sequel. "Never the same run twice" is the whole point of these games the word rogue-like references an ancient game from the 80s called Rogue which was one of the first to introduce randomly constructed dungeons. Basically there is an algorithm that builds out a whole dungeon floor by floor and it's your job to ascend it as it becomes more difficult. Along the way you make choices and trade-offs to build your character for that singular run to give yourself the best chances. Each floor is typically capped by a skill check like a boss for example to proceed to the next. If you die, you start all over from floor 1, but now the rooms are randomly rearranged. New enemies, new items, different opportunities. Sometime you get fucked by bad RNG and sometimes its just piss easy because you get the best items, the only constant is you as a player get better and each time instinctively get farther in the run because you know what you are doing. You can't in good faith put a "length" on these kind of games, in Hades to get the true ending you have to clear all five levels 10 times. This can take 8 hours if you're experienced or 100 to build the skills to make that possible.

Ok honestly Hades is incredible in it's entirety and I think that you both would enjoy it immensely. This is the kind of game that you could do casual lets plays of or stream. Or both, if you wanted. The story is crafted so carefully, it can at times feel like it's not moving along. But that's where the gameplay comes in. Typically I'm not a fan of rogue-likes, I don't find enjoyment from doing the relatively same thing over and over and over again. But Hades gives you so many variables to play around with that every run IS different from every other one. And the longer you play the more things you unlock, giving yourself even more variables. Dozens of possible powers from dozens of characters, 6 possible weapons to choose from with up to 4 different play styles each, and about a couple dozen permanent abilities to upgrade. The characters have been curated so beautifully and accurately that you're always interested in what they might have to say. It's just inherently interesting and fun. I 100% support playing this game in any form, whether we get to see it or not. But I'd definitely sit down and watch you guys play Hades.

"Never the same run twice" while it's technically true, Hades features the same enemy type and bosses at the same moment in a run, so while you do get new powers and use different weapons + boons, it still feel really similar due to how the levels works. It's still an incredibly good game, I've spent 125 hours on this game, got the true ending and 100% achievements but I wouldn't want to play it again, I feel I saw everything, but then again it's a very good length for a game like that. Hades was on gamepass and played the shit out of it! It is so fucking good... BUT! It is hard. You know rogue likes are you die you start over from the beginning with nothing. There are permanent upgrades to help you get further and further every time, but none of that really helps if you don't get the core mechanics down which move at a million miles per second. This game does have an "easy mode" I forget what it's called exactly but you can enable and disable it where everytime you die it stacks I think 1% damage reduction. So idk you die 100 times you're invincible 🤷🏽‍♀️ idk how it works lol. Pro tip though. I would not not recommend switch. To play it. Games murder on analogue sticks and the switch sticks are made of paper lol
@Kaikirith

the "easy mode" is god mode, but its not necessarily an *easy* mode so much as it is an additional buff that can be toggled on and off and gives you additional defense and nothing more. which you could argue makes it an easy mode but unless you learn how to read enemy attacks, the higher difficulties will still chew you up and spit you out even with maxed out god mode on

I've played Hades and it's an amazing game, really fun combat, beautiful artsyle, great writing and characters (Dusa best girl don't @ me), I'm not too sure it's conducive to streaming though. Since you're going to be doing a lot of runs, a lot of death, completing a run takes a lot of time, skill and luck. And even if you finish a run, it's not the end of the game. You need to complete multiple runs to get the whole story. It's a lot more effective and enjoyable as something you play on your own, something you can either just knock out a handful of attempts for an hour or settle in for an evening to try and do as much as possible.

I'm not a fan of Top down games. But Hades was actually good. And funny I was gonna recommend it to you two. I regret not playing more of it when it was on gamepass.

Hi Ken, hi Beth! I did ask about it in the past but I think you might've missed it then. Would there be a possibility of you reacting to the Overwatch 2 PvE campaign? I know you don't usually react to gameplay but there is a lot of important lore in the campaign, especially in the cinematics between the missions

I still can not point a bad side in first Hades. The gameplay is full of good action, the story and text are both amazing, art is good, soudtrack kicks ass... and sure, there are A LOT of things to do in the game. I can't spoiler much, but I can say that "escape from Hades" is just ONE of the things to do...

Hades is Fun the first one you play as Zagreus son of Hades trying to leave Hades to find his mother everytime you die you return to the court of Hades where every one else also returns. Some story happens not gonna spoil and the other gods decide to help you On the second one you play as the daughter of Hades that ive never heard but to be fair i also never had heard about Zagreus before but the game was only announced so far so nothing more than that Personally i felt it a bit repetitive on the lack of new enemies and especially bosses though some bosses can have their difficulty increased around the 10th run you know what is coming for you.....and yeah get used to take baby steps until the final boss

Hades is interesting to me because there's been a lot of attempts at a procedurally generated story game, but when comparing their text-heavy title Pyre and Hades, Hades' script was THREE TIMES LONGER. It just takes a lot more work and content to make it work, with enough dialogue to fill the gaps inbetween going out to fight and coming back to the hub (and everything in between)

Hades is great, instead of your deaths being annoying every time you die, it actually progresses the story.

The game has a LOT of content. I recommend doing a letsplay of Hades because you'll spend each video on a singular run, at least once you get the hang of things loo

I never played the game but a fellow KZbinr name Jacksepticeye has played the game and loves it to the bone 😄 he is also a fan of the score as i believe he has a fan favorite across the game. That I might guess he has a tattoo on his body to show he love it. 😅

Zagreus, in-game, son of Hades! In Greek mythology, son of Zeus and Persephone! Also a god of rebirth. And Nyx is one of the older gods, the goddess of Night, to be exact, and mother to Thanatos (God of Death) and Hypnos (God of Sleep, no, not kidding.) The fact that there's never the same run is exactly what makes rogue-likes and Rogue-lites so fun and challenging! Every item is random, so you have to adapt according to what you have! This game really earned all of its awards, not only for the story, the gameplay, and the character designs! Especially the character designs, it makes bi people panic because of how good-looking everyone is, I can vouch, Aphrodite was beautiful, but Thanatos was just as handsome.
