ATTENTION AUDIO- It has come to my attention from the comments that sound quality can be poor, unfortunately KZbin does not allow for re-uploading the sound track. The main issue is music mix [ironic in that I hate documentaries on t.v. having the dialogue drowned out], I should run the 'radio' test and put the sound track through small speakers [after mixing in the studio]. The current fix is to try using head phones or use the t.v. or desktop for play back. I have since upgraded my sound studio, and changed my approach to voice over in recent months which I hope is evident in recent videos. Thank you for your understanding. [ at some point I may re upload the entire video.. but try and retain views and ranking]

Very interesting. Gave me a lot to think about. However, I think 'Stanegate' probably does not mean Stone Gate, as mentioned. Much more likely that it means Stone Road, from the Danish 'Gade', meaning road. After all, it's a road. 😀

Full of historical insights and detail, this is an excellent contribution to the Roman period in Britain, focused on its famous northern boundary. There are thought-provoking comments about battle tactics, construction of civilized towns, and the overall mandate of Rome in Brittania. Photography and modelling adds much to our understanding of this period. My congratulations to Jules Dingle for a worthy addition to our understanding of history.

A very watchable documentary indeed and I was intrigued by it all the way, and found the Iranian and Syrian troops new and inreresting information for me. A thought came to mind while listening to your speculations: I know nothing of battle tactics but play a good deal of chess: could the wall also have served as a way of slowing down, vastly slowing down, attack on York and other key town areas, allowing for unimpeded riders to notify York and others and thus help to keep the main body of the Roman Empire in Britain a lot safer?
@julesdingle
@julesdingle Жыл бұрын
absolutely .. the idea of 'shaping' the battlefield that has come to light in a current war seems to be part of Roman doctrine.. and for instance the success of the legion over Boudicca's rebellion was their choice in the battle ground. very glad you enjoyed the video

Cracking video-thank you I fish when I can on Crag Loch-shown on your footage. Ive often thought no enemy was likely to attack through a lake or marsh then ascend a 3-400 foot vertical cliff-so why the wall? And-why the Vallum? Must have been more work than the wall itself-and its on the civilised side? And lastly-when you look at even 14th/15th century maps of Britain they are hopeless; how then did the Romans know that this was the shortest point to divide the island? Anyone have theories?-be glad to hear Tom

As maps are another interest I'm going to do some videos one how Britain was mapped.. the Romans are a good place to start. But the main advantage the Romans incorporated was intelligence, local knowledge, scouts who were auxiliaries and basic map making and navigation skills.

But with exceptions, I was filming north of the wall Bremenium [Rochester] on the road to Scotland and that has ballista platforms to guard the road [you can even see the old stone balls built into the local old school house] and this has a role perhaps similar to medieval castles.. part base, part castle to hide in, and part forward control.

The legion, supposedly.. soldiers were civil engineers although they would build marching camps, quite elaborate earth, turf and timber ramparts ..similar to the western part of the wall on a frequent basis, sometimes daily. I believe there is a great deal you have failed to understand about the Romans; it is apparent that you have made more than a few assumptions (intermingled with some facts). Remember the Roman Empire lasted for more than 1000 years. I have seen numerous Roman ruins across Britannia - even up to modern day Scotland. I have never seen a British ruin in Italy. This doesn't even begin to address the influence of Roman culture across Britannia.

The video doesn't take a position on Celtic culture, and I studied it when I was younger. Celtic Britain had a lot of interesting culture and they were certainly no push over.. Britain was never fully conquered and it took decades for Rome to achieve what it did. Eventually after a few centuries Celtic Britain adopted a hybrid of the old culture and Romes.

@@julesdingle Did you speed up the audio at all during editing? or do you read that fast normally? Often increasing the speed while maintaining the same pitch will reduce annunciation quite a lot. I know that with the few video's i read from script I did speed myself up by about 10% on account I am a very slow reader. And wanted to pace the production a bit better. And I still thought i was really slow. Though I had one or two people tell me they could not understand what I was saying all that well. I also opted to drastically reduce background music volume to be almost non-existent. I will check out the newer video's on the channel and see what I think of them too! FWIW I am having some mild difficulty understanding everything said in this video, but that is often when there is music that is a touch too intrusive. Having dyslexia myself though I find I need to really concentrate on what people are saying at the best of times. So I am an unusual case, while most others will not have any issues. But I have been finding even as this video progresses I am finding it easier to understand. Also the subject matter and presentation otherwise are fantastic. I will certainly check out other content here.

@@wishusknight3009 Thanks for the comment, no, I didn't speed up the audio. My first issue was a pretty rubbish mic and only getting into voice overs in the middle of 2020.. so lack of practise. The next mistake was to follow KZbinrs lead in cutting out breaths.. and keeping up that pace. Adding to that I did multiple recordings, so my tone changes according to day. So after a few months of learning, I now ..speak naturally, use a better mic, and do the audio in on long take. I'm still learning.. my next venture [in the history subject] is the Roman conquest in detail, starting in Wales. So would appreciate a follow-up review.
