Notes Hb= protein with quaternary structure found in RBCs whose job it is to transport O2 around body. O2+ Hb= oxyhemoglobin. At high Pp O2 (ie: Lungs)= high affinity for O2 so loads. At low PP O2 (ie: respiring tissues)= low affinity for O2 so unloads. Graph S-shaped due to initial co-operative bonding, but eventually becomes harder as Hb becomes saturated. CO2- Bohr effect- Curve shifts right lowering affinity for O2 as pH increases causing Hb to change shape (respiring tissues). Left shift = higher affinity, loads O2 in lungs at lower O2, good for low O2 environments, foetus etc. Right shift- lower affinity, more O2 unloaded at tissue, good for organisms with high metabolic rate.

Why are we ignoring their effect in lungs during right shift and in tissue during left shift . Because ultimately it will be difference in saturation of hb that will hive amount of O2 used by tissue

you just said haemoglobin changes shape to make it easier for oxygen to bind, now your saying haemoglobin changes shape to make it harder to bind??????????????
@marvel123_agents Жыл бұрын
Haemoglobin has four haem groups, so 4 oxygen molecules can bind to each haemoglobin molecule. Once the first oxygen molecule binds, it becomes easier for the next three to bind. However, once 4 oxygen molecules have bound to haemoglobin, there is no ‘space’ for a 5th oxygen molecule to bind, so it becomes harder for more oxygen to bind
