Points: 1. The Afferent arterioles bring blood into the kidney's glomerulus filtering 120ml/min of blood filtrate in the capsule 2. A drop in BP releases renin being an enzyme and not a hormone. It's the first component of the RAAS system as the juxtaglomerular cells in the afferent arteriole have a mechanism to pick up a drop in blood volume. These cells are baroreceptors 3. Mechanism to release or activate renin: A. LOWER BLOOD VOLUME: Lower volume means the afferent arterioles are not stretched much and this triggers renin release from the juxtaglomerular cells baroreceptors (aka glomerular cells) B. LOWER BLOOD CONCENTRATION: Macula Densa cells chemoreceptors in the distal convoluted tubule measure concentration of sodium in the filtrate and release renin by connective tissue that binds with the juxtaglomerular cells in the afferent arteriole. Most of the Sodium gets absorbed before reaching the distal convoluted tubule. Basically, as blood moves slower, kidneys have more time to absorb the filtrate. C. INCREASED SYMPATHETIC RESPONSE: Direct sympathetic innervation from a fight/flight situation requires BP increase for heart to deliver more blood to muscles and the necessary organs. The RAAS system helps regulate blood pressure by increasing blood volume through salt and water retention, and by narrowing blood vessels. This maintains a balance between blood flow and blood pressure, providing the body with enough blood and oxygen to function properly.

This is fantastic! I am applying to nursing school and had to retake A&P since I had to take it so long ago. Rather than repeat 2 semesters of A&P I am taking a credit by exam. You do a great job of explaining things. When I go back through the material to study I am going to see if you have any videos on the things I was fuzzy on. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
