Will it run? "Ran when parked" '69 Ford Mustang Mach 1 uncovered after 20 years in storage

After getting the Honda Trail 70 running and going for a ride ( • Blast From the Past: H... ), Davin is rabid for a quick turnaround on a project and we're hoping this classic Mustang fits the bill. This Mach 1 has been on a trailer in a pole barn for about 15 years, but was parked long before that. There is a local car museum with a Mach 1 in the same shade of green as this one in the video--it is breathtaking to day the least--restored to factory specs. I'm a GM guy but anything made during the muscle car era piques my interest, especially Mustangs.

The most rarest 69 Mach1 color was the avocado green. I had one of only two in the United States.

Pull the plugs, and give it a compression check too, there may be a stuck valve or ring blowby after sitting so long. Car is amazing for its age and lack of attention. I too am cheering for you guys to get it running again.

OMG! In 1972 I bought a 69 Mach1 428cj wirh the shaker hood and 4 speed stick in maroon. I used to street race it and was never beat by anything. God I loved that car! Not to long after rebuilding the motor I got talked into a new Pontiac with all the creature comforts. I wish I'd have kept the Mustang.

This car sat for 20 years. Don't risk ruining the engine by trying to rush the start. Take a the time to change the oil and pull the distributor to prime it.

It's primed now. 30 seconds of cranking should be enough.

Change the oil, rebuild the ignition, rebuild the carb, new air filter, new antifreeze, and thermostat then time to try it out. That's a 2 day job if the carb rebuild kit is available and you take your time. Once that's going do a brake job and get new tires.

Yeah you should always do a reverse coolant system flush as well. Not to mention the fuel filter, and pre-oil the cylinder bores.

My Sister (in 1975)r had a Silver Jade '69 Mach 1 with an 'S' code 390, C-6 Auto with a Shaker hood and rear window slats... Loved that car! It was 2 years before I got my license.

Replace the fuel tank, and fuel line as well. Possible rust in the line. Not to mention old has that will cause problems with the valve's.

I can’t believe you tried to start it without at least replacing the old oil. Now it’s everywhere in the pump and engine!!! All from start to there I thought you were spot on but you got too excited!

What a great car in a unique color. Looks in amazing condition. Windsor had a 2 barrel and Cleveland had a 4 barrel and better internal parts list if my memory is correct With 290 listed horsepower. My first new car was a red with gold strips Mach I with a 351 Cleveland. Also. For all those complaining about the new Mach I not having a Shaker hood. Take a close look. No shaker hood. The Shaker came on Cobra Jet cars. I opened my scoop and purchased a breather ram air air filter that worked off vacuum. Loved that car, but having kids created a need for a larger vehicle so the Mustang had to go. One of my favorite cars.

The 351 Cleveland has canted valve heads simular to the big block Chevy. The 290 horsepower rating was underrated in 69 for insurance reasons. 300+hp was considered high risk.

‘67 & ‘69 are my favorite year Mustang’s. To each their own but styling-wise I think those years are best. In fact I’d say just about every car made in ‘67 looked great.

Did I miss that the fuel line got disconnected or pinched off? I wouldn't have wanted to pump a bunch of nasty old gas from the tank up to the carb. I like to spin them over the first time for oil pressure with the plugs out. Less stress on the dry engine and it spins over faster, thus priming the lube system faster. Also, the pugs out gives the opportunity to add some lubrication to the cylinders. I like MMO for that because of the Stoddard solvent in it (about 25% last time I checked, plus mineral oil). Can't wait for next week!

I usually disconnect the fuel line and just squirt 2 stroke gas down the carbs to fire it off quick.

That is a beautiful car I would have at least oiled those cylinders, it's good it didn't start. I'm sure you know better sometimes we get excited and don't think, the car was definitely stored well. Really looking forward to seeing this one.

I missed out on a 69 Mach back in the day. It was sitting in a front yard for sale. It turned out that that the son owed his father money. Dad held title to the car. He told me 2500 takes it. I ran down to the bank. When I came back some guy with a flat bed was loading up the car. He was driving by had the cash on hand and the rest is history.

My best friend in high school had a 69 Mach 1. It was blue. I love that car. He had a 67 fastback with a 390 in it before that. I loved that car even more. I'm glad to see you have this one to work on. I'm glad to see that it's in such good condition. I'm looking forward to seeing this car run.

as an owner of a '70 Mach, i'm always glad to see another one back on the road. that one looks so clean i wonder what the owner's intent was as a 'project' 25 years ago? also, I could never never have a car hauler sit loaded up for 15 years...that would be my hardest working vehicle of all lol

I hope he oiled the cylinders down good before turning it over..most don't and that's the fastest way to wipe rings out of an engine that's sat..priming them only helps the bearings.

I had 69 Mach one when I was 18 Just like that one, 351 Windsor with a 3 speed trans. Mine had the shaker carb. Now I have a 2017 460 hp GT. It's awesome.

Replacing the ignition parts is a good is a, but the quality of the replacement parts are suspect. Might want to hang onto the old stuff for a while, just in case.

@\VV/ In 1970 I was 17. Mom loaned me $600 to buy a '65 squareback, factory 289 hipo! It had it all. Big alternator pulley, engine balancer,quicker ratio steering,4 speed & 9 inch rear! A few years later, I bought a '65 fastback that had the 289 hipo drivetrain installed in it. It had a BIG Crower solid lift cam, Torquer intake, Holley, headers, line lock, 4 speed & a 4.57 9 inch rear. With 7" cheaters. I shifted at 7,000 rpm it was my daily driver & racer. In the 1/8 it ran 8.30. This was about 1972 or '73. I payed $650 for it,I'd give anything to still have it even though I'm 68!

@@Mike583 A "K" code that's cool. A friend of mine had Red 65 GT K code almost exactly like that. He went into the service and when he came home on leave the car was gone. Turns out his Dad sold it, told him you're going to kill yourself in that thing. Bummer!

Heck, a '69 Mach 1 has always been my favorite car, and I'm a GM guy! '65 Corvette, '70 Camaro Z28, a few Pontiac Firebirds in the 90s and a 2017 1500 Silverado these days. Looking forward to this series! :)

Replace all of fluids. Belts hoses. Tune up parts. Use seafoam. Marvel Myrstry oil.

My Dad worked at a Ford dealership in so cal when the 64 + 1/2 --65 fastbacks Shelby's etc. first came out !! he was probably one of the first people to drive/ deliver a mustang (have cards of mustangs he sent back to Iowa to aunt Edna ). This green one sweet nice job David 👍

The 1969 Mach 1 Mustang was one of the best looking, sexiest looking muscle cars of the 1960's. I've always wanted one, especially a 428 CJ, but a clean looking one is pretty much out of reach for the average car guy. Still love them though and looking forward to seeing this one get back on the road.

I'm actually more happy that it didn't start... What were you thinking when trying to start it without doing some careful preparations? You never know if the piston rings are seized, cylinder walls dry from oil, oil turned to gunk in some places or cooling system/water pump full of gunk. Starting it up could've made (more) damage to it.

Nice car and should be simple to work on. Started my apprenticeship in 1970 and still have a point file in my toolbox. Had to use it when the 73 Porsche 914 sits over time, now I put a piece of paper between points if it will sit for some time..

Any car sitting this long ... I would have pulled all the plugs and squirted a *little* light oil (transmission fluid is good) into each cylinder. Then crank it with the plugs out for a bit to get the oil pressure up and re-seat the rings and valve seats.

Ok guys. This story is kinda emotional to me. My grandma passed away just a year ago. Didn't took enough time to pimp the car she loved, her husband's (thus my grand pa) one, that we still have in our family. Never had the joy to get her on a (last) ride. Cars can be restored and maintained to last, and run, and bring joy, forever. The peoples we loves, sadly, can't. Please do what must be done, as sometime a project put on hold until later, is a projet put on hold until too late.

I noticed the vacuum line wasn't plugged into the vacuum advance on the distributor; so maybe someone was adjusting the timing, at some point? I'm looking forward to more videos!

This car was parked in the late 80's if his claim of being parked 25 years ago is true. It isn't totally original. Speakers cut in the back seat, Looks like it was a 2bbl original car, but has a 4bbl on it. Remember it was on the road for 20 years.
