When I was in the Navy, and stationed at Great Lakes, I took a walk to Lake Forest where I found a Ferrari dealership much to my surprise. Well, they had two Ferrari's in the showroom; a Dino and a Daytona. The salesman tolerated a poor Naval enlisted man and we had some dialogue (he was humoring me, which I appreciated). Price came up and the Dino was 15,000 (I know different money back then), with the Daytona at 25,000. I said I guess you don't sell many at 25k, and he said; "if you've got 15, you've got 25. I suppose I'll never forget that (or the experience of seeing those beautiful cars in person. I was 21 y/o at the time (oh, what a feeling)!

That'd be Rick Mancuso's Ferrari store. He's still an exclusive Ferrari dealer in another location in LF. I also used to visit the old downtown location. You could look through the shop windows and sometimes see a V12 motor on the bench disassembled.

I have always loved the looks of these but they are insanely expensive to buy and own nowadays. Just cannot justify the expense in my head given its mediocre performance. There was a time l could have purchased one but l certainly couldn't have afforded the upkeep which is truly ridiculous now.

I was at a Ferrari club meet,and was looking around the different cars ,most were mainly newer models but there was one Dino,and it just stood out with it's beautiful shape and exquisite interior🙂

these cars were beautiful , back in the late70's an Italian restaurant owner in Winnipeg where we live imported a white Dino from Italy I believe i was told it was a 1967 , we were all young teenage guys who were use to cars from the big 3 and none of them ever looked like this piece of art, his car wasn't fancy looking and was always parked out front of his restaurant and it sure brought in the business and it became some what of a meeting place for all of us, and it always sounded so exotic to us kids he would say, ok ok i will start it for you to hear, we were thrilled ash the sound of the V6 and how it sounds running it up through the gears ❤️ it was always garage kept and only driven from middle of May to September, he eventually sold it to an Italian buddy of his who owned a body shop and drove it hard and put away wet always impressing the girls and not doing much maintenance to like the other owner and we saw it go into disrepair and get rusty and it eventually ended up in Vancouver ,BC i heard where it was never garaged rusted out from the salt air and ended up being parted out ,, too bad, sure was a nice when we all knew it in front of that restaurant , good times

When I was home ported in San Diego (USN) way back in another century... I frequently passed a parked 250GT of some variety. I wasn't very familiar with the Ferrari Family Details at that time. It was white (under a lot of dust & rust) with a very ratty looking black canvas top. After a year or so, there was a "For Sale" sign in the window, for $3500. This was in the early 1970s. I slowed down every time I passed that "faded beauty" and kept thinking "I can probably afford that much..." Then after it was out of sight and the rest of my brain woke up again, I knew that beneath the rust there were very likely a whole lot more problems that I couldn't see. Eventually, I drove by, on the way to the Navy Base and it was gone. I knew it was all for the better but that didn't mean I forgot about it. Ferraris and an occasional E-Type roadster would cause that foolish contemplation that never went away... 😏😕

It never ceases to amaze me how much tastes change over time. Growing up, the Dino was the black sheep of the family. Extremely "cheap" (in Ferrari terms) compared to many of it's contemporaries, and now it's treated as a classic and a driver's car.

In the 80s I had a Road and Track book about the 246 GTB and GTS . They describet it as a hoot to drive ! It easyly outcornered its big 12 cylinder brothers , thanks to its wonderfully ballanced weightdistribution . It steered and braked like a gokart . The R&T journalists loved and praised it to bits , THAT good it is ! Its a FERRARI !

Guy near us bought a classic defunct gas station with glass front doors and renovated it , he keeps a red Dino in it along with a couple 60s era Porsche race cars. Lit up at night, it looks like a beautiful museum diorama but in the woods on a back road in New Hampshire.

I must have been the unluckiest Dino owner in history. Every time I drove it there was the awful anxiety that it would break down usually followed by the preceding premonition coming true. However. When it worked it worked brilliantly. Its a car I miss but then rose tinted specs ensures you only recall the good drives not the misery. Thanks for the memory.

The first time I was aware of the Dino marque when a boy spoilt it for me. The model concerned was that yellow Dino Berlinetta Competizione with the double headlights and bubble canopy. Staggeringly beautiful.

I’m 64 years-old and remember the days when no one considered a Dino a real Ferrari. All the expensive maintenance and none of the horsepower or cache of the 12 cylinder models. And nobody dared show up at a Ferrari meet in one. The insecurity level was so high most owners stuck “look at me” Ferrari badges all over them. The Porsche 911 was its largest competitor. Most experts at the time felt the Porsches were better. Funny ol’ world izzintit?

I can remember back in the early 80's in Italy when a Dino was more expensive to buy than a Lamborghini Miura, especially if it was a GTS. Now instead a Miura is more than twice the money while some are selling them for over a $1M. So the Dino hasn't been inexpensive since the late 70's but today some exotics are more desirable than others!

it´s not a ferrari as they said when released it´s a Dino and later came out other that they say isn´t a ferrari , that one there´s no videos about it as the first Dino a couple of years ago i have one because it was so cheap that i couldn´t leave it ,about 500€ in 93 and running, a white one ,no rust just lot´s of smoke when it started or when pushed ,whe i bought it a friend of mine took is mother mint condition renault 5 from 1980 and with only smoke i notice he was racing me with the 1.0L engine renault 5 in mint condition while i was in second gear but some easy fix and maintenance it solve the case ,no one wanted them, as an example the bmw 2002 and the alfas GT junior were almost given, i had 7 bmw´s 2002 and 3 juniors the bmw´s were all diferent and from diferent years i remenber a guy trying to sell me his a white one but he painted the bumpers black because at the time a plastic black bumper was modern chromed cars were old, so i started buying chromed bumpers cars, i already had 7 and didn´t bought it but after some years i should had bought it , it was all protected with pklastic no rust anywhere ,and at the time i would pay maybe 500€ re-chroming the pieces and what i found funny was having a list of parts for bmw´s and mercedes and went to two parts shops they had all in stock this in 95, i asked if he knew where to buy a complete exaust system ,the guy told me directions outside the city at 1.5km´s his brother had a exaust systems shop ,i went there with a blue metalic 2002 and asked if he could get 6 exaust systems for the 2002 and he asked me, when?i replyed that the one i was driving needed one and had more 5 ,he asked me ,NOW? i said when you have time ,he had 3 friends at the shop kind of mocking me and after 5 minuts of hearing metal against metal noise he apeared with one entire system in his hand and, had several exaust systems in a corner of the house ,i thought he had to order them but no, with no rust he had the 6 exaust systems and assembled one in the 2002 i was driving , i paid with all the work what today is 75€ each , there were so many old cars in the city i live that the parts stores had everything even the breaking pads for a 68 or 9 280S from mercedes, this original parts and for the juniors also lot´s of parts, the dino i spent 500€ and it drove and looked new ,it was my daily car after stoping a alfa-romeu GT 2000 i had since 72 (new)

In 1988 or ‘89, I was visiting my father and we dropped into the local Ferrari dealer and they had a used Dino on the showroom floor. I recalled it was clean but needed paint and minor refurbishment. Ask price was like 48,000. As with many cars, just wish I had a crystal ball.

I like the Dino, also very pretty in yellow. I will never be able to afford one, but it is very similar to my Toyota MR2 Spyder. Beautiful, transverse mounted mid-engined, not very dissimilar performance, but the MR2 is much less expensive and much more reliable:)

The sodium filled exhaust valves point is more of an issue than the film makes out, and can effect all Ferraris made up to 1982 not just the Dino. Having said that according to my mechanic the Dino is more prone to this faliure due to needing to be revved harder to achieve ultimate performance than the bigger torquier V12's (although Daytonas and Boxer's are by no means immune to this issue). If you're planning on driving one to max regularly they it should be checked if they have been replaced or plan to replace them.

Bingo. Very true on all counts, and it’s not just a Ferrari issue. For example Alfa used the same sodium filled valves in this timeframe as well with similar results. And you really have to rev those!

One day I hope Ferrari will figure out what Rolex did - jewel-like machinery is worth a lot more than amazing performance. If Ferrari made a true new Dino with a 3.0 NA V6 with only just enough performance to break the limit but fantastic feeling and noise and looks - people would buy it to match their Rolex. How many times have McLaren etc owners actually used their cars to the full extent of their abilities, probably as many quartz watch owners who need thousands-of-a-sec measurement.

The thing is that jewel-like machinery is not the Ferrari ethos and never has been. It's about being the best, with a bent on performance rather than looks. That their cars also happen to resemble fine jewelry is happenstance. If you want a car that is meant to be a work of art, you buy a Pagani.

There is a British company, LB Specialists (formerly Lister Bell) that make a Lancia Stratos that looks exactly like the original, but it’s better built and much more affordable. They need to do the same with the 246 Dino. These cars were just too perfect to let die off (or worse, rust away), they should be put back into production with 21st century quality. I got to drive my uncles 1973 Dino many times in Italy where he lives (as long as you avoid the cities, Italy is a drivers paradise) and it’s the most perfect experience I’ve ever had behind the wheel. I’ve always loved the 365gtb/4. Daytona, but it’s really only enjoyable over 70 mph, and you sure wouldn’t want to drive one in a city (I drove one in Manhattan once, BIG mistake). The Dino is like a ballet dancer: light on its feet and very entertaining. It’s not brutally fast like a Daytona, but it’s still a very fast little car that begs to be driven fast.

It's probably is not an issue on, say, a phone, or a laptop, but for those of us who watch this on a system which can reproduce lower frequencies, I recommend applying a low-pass filter on the incidental music which clashes both with your commentary and with that sweet-sounding engine. To be honest, the volume of the music is so low in the mix it's mainly a distraction and for me you would do better to just not include it.

I checked out this video because I always wanted one. Affordability and the cost to maintain prevented me from buying one. Now, I can afford it and again there is something preventing me from buying one. Primarily, due to driving it. The value decreases as you put on the miles. I would not take it on the freeway and the majority of streets are in disrepair. Also, I would not want to leave it unattended while parked. I guess I will have to wait until I can overcome my fear of owning one.
