My diagnoses is, stuck oil control ring on cylinder 3 for sure, and sticky oil ring on the rest, from short runs and lack of oil changes.The oil looked nasty when it was drained. It will be interesting to see, when you get it apart, what the true problem is. Great video!

Bought an 1978 GMC 3/4 ton pick up big block454 at very low price with all plugs fouling. Did compression tests all good enough. Intake manifold looked wet, so cleaned, tanked and then magna fluxed. Filings showed crack running from side to side right under the carb intake. It was sucking oil up through crank case. Installed new intake manifold and no more fouling. I used and abused the truck for years and sold it to a friend and still running strong with no fouling. Workhorse gust gas hog averaged 12.5 mpg.

When doing a leakage test I've always just balanced that particular cylinder on TDC so you don't have to worry about the engine swinging around and valves opening on you. Start off with #1 top dead and work your way through the firing order. Can use something long and thin like a welding rod or a long screwdriver through the plug hole to feel when the piston stops. 👍

From looking at the other plugs, the ones covered with ash, I'd say the motor is running hot consistently (wrong octane fuel or low quality fuel). The ash could also be from a small bit of oil leakage into a hotter cylinder. Not all oil burning shows up as an oil foul symptom like the plug he is working on. Great vid. I'd like to find out in a future video what the ash deposits are from for sure.

If the rings are bad, try check the dipstick after/while the engine running. Piston rings should seal oil & combustion chamber in two way, if the rings broke exhaust gas will pass through the ring and you can find exhaust gases from dipstick.

If you add oil through the plug hole and the engine is on an angle, that oil will sit on the low side of the block. How's the oil going to get over to the other side on the intake side? I love watching others wrench cause I wrench too. Keep the videos coming guys.

Oil will wick into the space between the piston and cylinder around the rings, and as soon as the motor is spun, it will spread and seal.

Great video thanks! Question; when performing the leak down test does it matter where the piston is in relation to TDC?
@johnmilner7603
@johnmilner7603 5 жыл бұрын
No, as long as you loosen the rocker arms so the valves can close. I like to tap the spring retainer to seal the valves in case of carbon build up. But if you don't want to loosen the rocker arms then you need the piston of that cyl at TDC on compression stroke so both valves are closed.

Very informative video! Can you expand on what causes the white color on spark plugs? I have an oil consumption problem and have been trying to track it down, after putting new spark plugs in very recently and pulling them to do compression and leak down tests I noticed that all 4 plugs(dodge 2.4L turbo) have a white residue on the ground electrode. Any pointers to send me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Really good video. It makes clear what really causes high oil consumption (...the rings and not a leak somewhere). If I buy a used car, is there a reliable way to detect if the car has already a high oil consumption (like 1 litre pro 1000 miles) ? Does the compression test also work if there is a lot of carbon built up on the oil control rings ?

Why don’t you run the first gauge up to 100 PSI so that you can subtract the second gauge and get the exact percentage of leak down? Why do you stop at 90 PSI? Great video by the way. Most of the videos on KZbin about how to perform this test are ridiculously wrong

The WHITE on the spark plugs is made by water vapor from the PVC system.....the ring blow-by contains the water vapor....a by-product of previously burned fuel being reintroduced back into the combustion chamber instead of going out the exhaust the first time around

Showing how to troubleshoot it right. It sucks that it's the piston rings. Valve seals would have been much less of a costly pain in the butt to deal with. Although while you've got it apart I suspect that the heads will get a service too.

I have a question for you. I have a 3.1 V6 engine (LHO, GM) and I have oil in the intake manifold. All spark plugs are very white, with white upper electrodes. Does this mean that oil is burned in this engine? Compression on all cylinders is equal and perfect, 190 psi . The oil quickly turns dark in color. I'm asking for help. Best regards, Adam from Poland

Thanks for more info. Question for you, as to what product and how much you think I should use. I have a 1995 Subaru 1.8L 4-CYL boxer Impreza, 177,000 miles. I have 76 and 78 PSI dry compression in #2 and 4 of one head (driver side). This started a few days ago, we noticed while on a highway trip the power was weak and I can hear it missing as the RPMs drop from driving to idle. I don't have overheating, excessive oil consumption (drippy seals, I add a quart about every 900 miles), smoking, or fluids cross contamination. I'm waiting to have a leak down and another dry/wet compression test at a different shop. The first shop only did dry compression and wasn't too bright or helpful. If I end up having a head gasket leak between those two cylinders, what products would I possibly try to mend it? It must not be too bad of a leak, whatever it is, for the compression to build to 78psi dry. The other two good cylinders are 130ish psi. If it ends up being a valve leak, what products and strength could I try to get them clean? After cleaning, I will have valve clearances checked, as it's probably never been done. Thanks again.

Now, thanks to Davin (?), I know how and why. If you want to learn even more, look for "Mustie 1" on YT. This nice man is a VW Beetles and busses nut. He buys at garage sales or find on roadsides all kind of small engined equipment or bikes, fix them on the cheap and sell stuff on Craigslist. Amazing mechanic and great teacher at that.
