Steps on how to do an engine leakdown test:
Step 1 : Remove the spark plugs and rotate the engine to put the cylinder to be tested at TDC. Tip: Insert a long screwdriver or extension into the spark plug hole and turn the engine by hand with a socket on the crankshaft. When the screwdriver stops rising or falling, you’re at TDC. Don’t turn the engine backward if TDC is missed. Go around again. In a four-cylinder engine, cylinders one and four and two and three are at TDC at the same time.
Step 2 : Figure out which spark plug adapter works best and connect the gauge into the hole. Put the vehicle in gear and set the parking brake to prevent the engine from turning when air is compressed into the cylinder. Start with the regulator turned counterclockwise to zero the incoming pressure. Connect compressed air. Turn the regulator clockwise to pressurize air into the cylinder.
Step 3 : Record leakage percentage for the cylinder. Remove the oil dipstick, radiator cap and oil filler cap. Open the throttle body or remove the air cleaner. Listen and watch. Wherever air is escaping will indicate where the problem is. Disconnect the gauge and move to the next cylinder.
Follow along as I teach you how to do engine leak down testing, whether you are an automotive technician or a DIY-er looking for tips us pros use.
Grab your tools, lets get ready, lets hit it!

been doing this on and off for 10 years ..... I have never used this tool and I almost never use a compression gauge ... AND today that lack or tool usage has bit me in the butt... and that's a defeating feeling

That whistle test is causing confusion. Yes it tells you that you are in the compression stroke, but NOT actual TDC. I ALWAYS use something through the spark plug hole to verify that I am not on either side of actual TDC. Hope this helps.

Air loss in the crank case can be rings or a hole in the past. Put a spoon full of oil in the cylinder and recheck If the air loss improves its the rings. If not its a hole in the piston If I have a loss in the valves I loosen the rocker arms when possible to make sure the valve is closed if you still have air loss It's a bent or burnt valve

Best video on this topic I've seen so far. Great job! I'm a DIY mechanic and don't necessarily need to buy the SnapOn leak down tester featured in your video, but I want to do it anyway. The reason is that buying the tester and performing the test is probably still cheaper than scheduling an appointment for a certified mechanic to do the same work. The bonus is that I'll always have the tester, and will have learned a new skill. This video definitely gets a thumbs up.

Great video. When it comes to these leak down testers, I don't really too much for the knob function. I dunno. Sees it could have a numbered dial on it. As it is, yuh turn it out to some undetermined point until no air passes thru - and then begin turning it in... That is, a precise instrument should have a precise/calibrated/numbered dial.
@lolatu8255
@lolatu8255 11 ай бұрын
The instrument doesn't know how much air pressure is coming in, is it 125psi? 150psi? 175psi? so you have to adjust the inlet pressure to make it work.
