@@big_time_2023 stretch a latex glove over the exhaust tip. If air is getting past the exhaust valves, (and assuming theres no holes/leaks in the exhast pipe) the glove will inflate - identifying potential bent exhaust valve/poor seat.

Air loss in the crank case can be rings or a hole in the past. Put a spoon full of oil in the cylinder and recheck If the air loss improves its the rings. If not its a hole in the piston If I have a loss in the valves I loosen the rocker arms when possible to make sure the valve is closed if you still have air loss It's a bent or burnt valve

Best video on this topic I've seen so far. Great job! I'm a DIY mechanic and don't necessarily need to buy the SnapOn leak down tester featured in your video, but I want to do it anyway. The reason is that buying the tester and performing the test is probably still cheaper than scheduling an appointment for a certified mechanic to do the same work. The bonus is that I'll always have the tester, and will have learned a new skill. This video definitely gets a thumbs up.

Put an long 1/4 extension in the spark plug hole and turn until it stops rising, then it's at true TDC not + - 20° like that whistle gives you 😅
@CR-rc5ch
@CR-rc5ch 22 күн бұрын
Agreed. Also worth note there's a TDC for compressive stroke and exhaust. Need to know which one you are on by looking at camshaft lo lobes. Otherwise...the escaping air might just be indicating the the exhaust cam is open as intended.
@krga94c
@krga94c 4 ай бұрын
More accurately, the whistle is letting you know the piston is on its way back up on the compression stroke, but not necessary at TDC. To ensure perfect TDC, align the crankshaft to markings on the front of the engine to '0" of the compression stroke by turning the crank manually. Since some engines are virtually impossible to see TDC on the crank pulley, you can also a long plastic straw (won't cause any damage) in spark plug hole to see when TDC is reached.

My first time doing a timing belt on a ford escape and my co workers were losing their mind about getting the timing right after putting back together. But i did my research and made sure cylinder 1 was TDC with this exact same method and the timing marks were all lined up. First time starting the engine it ran perfectly and threw no codes. Ran smooth and since then I know to always just check cylinder 1 with a stick in the hole and timing marks in place.

That whistle test is causing confusion. Yes it tells you that you are in the compression stroke, but NOT actual TDC. I ALWAYS use something through the spark plug hole to verify that I am not on either side of actual TDC. Hope this helps.

@MasterAutomotiveTraining

Tell me more. The exhaust is getting excessively hot? You ran a compression test and saw low compression? Have you tried testing engine vacuum?
@dawitkassa3131
@dawitkassa3131 6 ай бұрын
@MasterAutomotiveTraining Thank you for your response. Ya, the exhaust tuns red hot in 30-40 seconds. RPM was also high, I assumed it was cold start. I did the tests you mentioned; and Cylinder 2&3 compression was lower than the others two. I pulled the cylinder head and made all side block deck surface measurements. As I suspected, I found low spots in the middle, the center deck of 2&3. cylinders. I am not a rebuild specialist, but I think huge compression escapes in between these two cylinders that cause blowby. Also, i found dark oil lying over the head.The almunium head measurement looks good because it was resurfaced. I don't know how I forgot to resurfacing the deck. So, I guess the chances might be to pull the engine out for deck resurfacing or do the resurfacing manually without pulling the engine. Someone suggested using a graphite head gasket for better sealing. Thank you again

So what's the deal with green area reaching as high as 40% leakage when usually it's said that 10% is a healthy maximum and 20% is where real trouble starts; 30% you need a rebuild right now. I would love to hear your thoughts. Even some workshop manuals say anything past 25% means serious issues.

Great video. When it comes to these leak down testers, I don't really too much for the knob function. I dunno. Sees it could have a numbered dial on it. As it is, yuh turn it out to some undetermined point until no air passes thru - and then begin turning it in... That is, a precise instrument should have a precise/calibrated/numbered dial.
@lolatu8255
@lolatu8255 Жыл бұрын
The instrument doesn't know how much air pressure is coming in, is it 125psi? 150psi? 175psi? so you have to adjust the inlet pressure to make it work.

I have an i20, 2010 model, 1.6.My issue I'm experiencing with the car is that its not driving smoothly as it was. I took it the manufacturer to diagnose the problem and they told me, that compression was low in one of the cylinders, with a 120psi reading and the other 3 were 149 to150 psi between them. So they wanted to strip and see what's the problem and unfortunately I don't the money to cover that cost of stripping .I have read that 120psi is not that bad for one cylinder, just looking any other opinion. I have put fuel injector cleaner and valve ease but the problem still there. Funny thing on some days it drives well, no jerks, bad idle, misfiring and no wanting to switch off at stop/start traffic. The car has 165milege on it. I have attached an image of the report from manufacturer. Any advice would be highly appreciated regards Ayanda

Just got our leak down test kit today to test a 2000 Toyota Celica SX (australia) - we've done a compression test on cylinder 3 and there is zero compression so hoping the leak down can tell us if we can just remove the cylinder head and have it overhauled/repaired - or if she actually has a cracked block and needs an engine replacement 😢

You test that when the cylinder is pressurized. If air escapes when the piston is at tdc the exaust valve is burnt/bent and leaking. The fix would be to clean the valve and lap. If it was bent you would just replace it
