The Car that NEVER depreciated: Honda S2000 | The Appraiser - Ep. 17

With the success of the Honda Prelude SH, Integra Type-R, and the NSX, Honda was looking reel in the 1990's with one of the most successful generations of sports cars ever assembled. Then in 1999, comes the Honda S2000... The cherry on top of what was already a perfect triple layer cake. The S2000 set a new benchmark for any roadster built after it with the 1st-Gen AP1 engine bringing 237HP, with a 6-speed transmission, and a curb weight of, 2,756 lbs. Flashy specs and all but the best part about the S2000 AP1 was its 8800RPM redline and the 2.2 L AP2 engine at 8200 RPM. The Honda S2000 remains on the list of cars that has never and may never depreciate... As long as Honda doesn't make another run of S2000's. (Holding our breath)
This particular car is a 2004 Honda S2000 AP2 roadster in Suzuka blue with blue interior and only 80,000 miles on the odometer. The owner, Chris has big plans for this car but Colin disagrees with his intentions. Will Colin's appraisal convince the owner to keep the car as is? Tune in and find out.

@@jub07 Tongue-in-cheek. I'm not sure I've ever seen an S2000 turned into a race car survive for very long. LOL! Personally, I'd prefer to take a salvage-titled S2000 that's in decent shape racing rather than ruin a car that could potentially be an "investment opportunity" as its popularity and price continues higher. I know from personal experience there are TONS of salvage-titled S2000s out there. LOL!

@@GetIrked The issue I see is that salvage title s2000s are still stupidly expensive. By the time you get one and remediate its issues, you're likely to spend as much as you would on a clean one. As mentioned in this video, there's also issues that you can't fix. All parts are so expensive now, buying a questionable one for $15k is an expensive gamble. Dude also didn't say it's going to be a race car. My car is at the level that it has full bolt-ons (coilovers, wheels, exhaust, intake, tune, etc.). It could easily be reverted back to stock but I rather enjoy it this way. I autocross the car and the mods enhance everything I enjoy about it. A well modded track car is hardly "butchering" it. I'd call a stanced out POS butchering it but I don't think the one in the video is going in that direction. You can make it a good HPDE car that is still a fun street car and not "butchered." I don't think an 80k mile S2k is a good investment opportunity. Even if it goes up some, it's not going to be a $200k car and cars have a much higher opportunity cost and maintenance expense than other investment assets. It's appreciation/value is moreso that you could own it for a few years and not lose money. Having a fun car is not about increasing your net worth on a piece of paper. It's about enjoying the experiences the car allows you to have.

Those storage bags are worth huge money, generally about 250-300 a piece. The headrest speaker set is worth 500+. Suzuka Blue cars, especially Suzuka Blue over full blue actually tend to be slightly lower in value in the S2000 community as they're just not a fan of it compared to the other colors. 10 of 10 VINs help it's case, but the paintwork knocks it down a notch.

I bought a 2000 S2000 in 2004. I thought it was a good car but not a great car. I was wrong, great car, nothing like it, still have it, will never sell it and still today am amazed how a high production car is in such high demand with the price only going up.

Can't you people just enjoy something? It's a nice car but it's an 80k mile Honda that has repainted front and rear bumpers. I love these cars and happy to see them being appreciated and recognized but this is ridiculous. Is he supposed to put the car in a retirement home? Wrap it up in an airtight vacuum and never use it so that someone 50 years from now can stare at it through plastic? It'd be a travesty if they pulled it out too I guess. Glad people are appreciating them but people thinking of these things as a collector car and that enjoying them is "butchering" them is really weird. The reason they're so respected is for punching above their weight class on track and being Honda reliable while doing it. It's like forcing an athlete into a modeling career because you don't want them to get hurt.

I paid 16k for my 2001 S2000, 92K miles clean title. Has expensive parts on there like Ohlin coilovers, half roll cage, titanium exhaust, and more. It also came with two extra set of wheels and tires for the circuit and 3 brand new sets of race brake pads. The guy I bought it from modified it for track use and only ran it once at Grid Life for a couple hours and had to sell it because he found out a baby was on the way.

The reason why it's still worth 30k ironically is because owners like this one take them out of "all original condition" circulation by modifying them making the remaining examples retain or increase in value. You can easily modify an s2000 to make it better/faster/more fun and still keep all the original parts in a shed to reverse it back to stock if you want to but, it's only "all original" once. Enjoy the car.

Exactly. To me original is in every sense, meaning that the last time it was messed with was at the factory, and only things done outside of it were the routine maintenance and consumables. For someone to modify it and then putting it back to stock, that is no longer original. It was molested!

I disagree original car has all the original matching numbers parts. Cars are meant to be driven so if you want to drive the car daily or a lot and save an engine let’s say pulling it and preserving it for later is a good thing instead of a catastrophic failure out of your hands taking out the original engine for good so it can never be original again.

Light mods make a huge difference on the AP2. Depends how far they go but just springs/shocks and square setup wheels/tires turn the car into something even more wild. Stock engine is plenty to get in trouble.

I worked for a Honda dealer for a couple of years, when the AP2s were out, and got to drive one, and an AP1. The sound of that engine at 10K RPM is something I hope I never forget! A masterpiece! ❤❤❤

I’m the second owner of a Silverstone 2004 S2000, all stock with original factory hardtop and 98K. Paid $16,500 for it in July 2012. I absolutely LOVE this car just as much today as the day I got it. Not a daily driver. Garage kept. My other chariot is a 2013 Camaro. That one gets most of the road.

The impact that that the original paint color has on the price of a S2000 can be fairly significant. The Suzuka Blue cars like this one have generally been relative bargains compared to the more rare color combinations. Overall I thought Colin provided a lot of good food for thought, as he usually does in this series.

interesting to see all the OEM purists - I get the appreciation for it being completely stock OEM but at the same time it's his car now - he can enjoy it however he wants. I've got a 2003 Suzuka with ~ 44k miles on it that is nearly finished becoming my vision of 'OEM Plus" that I'd had over a decade ago with my first S2000 - a 2002 Suzuka that I stupidly sold 7 years ago. I still have the original parts in case I wanted to revert to full stock but so far I'm loving driving my younger self's dream as a weekend canyon cruiser. To each their own - I just feel bad seeing these examples that spend their entire lives in garages rather than being driven.

@@kevinmejia8082 it is garage kept and has never seen rain or a wet road. He applies Shinitsu grease on the weather strip and gaskets once a year. It is very well taken care of. I believe with the color, option combo and mileage it might be a unicorn.

I had a 2003 silver with black top one that had an exhaust, intake and had been lowered a bit. I did really enjoy it but looking back I would have rather had a very clean stock like this one. My first car was an RX-7 which I miss as well, they were two cars you don't see on the road anymore.

Ugh, I sold my 2002 S2000 and I still regret it. Thing was bone stock, 52k miles. OEM hardtop, side strakes, rear spoiler, front lip. Even had the headrest speakers like this one. Was going to get a CR hard tonneau and the VGS steering wheel from Japan but…I also wanted my first 911. Only car I ever regret selling. New owner got hit while parked 3 weeks later. 🥺😭

I have a 06 laguna blue Pearl with 55k and have all 10 vins I’m doing a OCD restoration with tasteful mods. Nothing that can’t be reversed. But I don’t understand taking a clean car and chopping it up for a race car/track car. Just grab a high mileage S2K and send it. It’s a Honda last forever and reliable. There are plenty of good examples that would be great candidates without dropping 30k to start the build. But to each is own his car his build. They don’t make cars like this anymore raw power drivers car. Not the fastest but you better know what your doing if you wanna have fun with it especially AP1’s

it's incredible how much they cost in the US where you have the most, half of the total production really. When I bought mine in 2018 the prices were way more crazy in Europe where you really seldom see them (except for the UK where they had the most in Europe and they cost the less worldwide, but yes, some of them are rusty). Now they are probably more expensive in the US. I bought mine with 20k miles (40k km) and I modified it and plan to continue to do so but without butchering it! The car is actually very good as it is if you only use it on the road, if you track it you appreciate the mods. I have Recaro RSG and Ohlins on mine. If you mod it with quality parts there is a good payback! If I hadn't modified it I'd probably have already moved to something else. ciao

I own a year 2000, S2000 AP1 stock, in good condition. The new car price window sticker stored in the owners manual says it sold new, in Lakeland Florida, for $39,000 dollars. I think $25,000 to $36,000 are reasonable prices as of 2022. The value of the dollar is probably about 1/2 of what its value was in 2000. I think the S-2000 drives as close to a Ferrari as the average guy can afford.

I bought my silver 2005 s2000 with 163k miles 9 out of 10 vins present, front bumper was resprayed once but still the original bumper, one adult owner in january 2019 for $8700.. I spent so many nights detailing the interior engine bay to perfection, exterior 3 step paint correction… spent a little over $2000 in oem parts (when they were available).. almost three years It has 164400 miles and runs prefectly fine.. there is nothing like keeping original..

They actually never had headrest speakers from the factory. In 2006 Honda started adding speakers to the roll bars behind the headrest, one on each side of your head. I can tell you from experience, they don’t do much 😅

I would disagree. Paint fades differently on plastic than metal and it spent 18 years in California sun. You can notice the same fading issue on 2000s Renaults

There's no stereo speakers in the headrest on the 2004 models for the S2000. That came later on in I think the 2006 or 2007. Someone correct me if I am wrong. That 'black mesh' in the headrest is just that... a plastic mesh

Is it normal for the bumpers to be a different shade of blue than the rest of the car? Have they been repainted?

I noticed that too. Appears bumper was repainted. Appraiser mentioned that. But its still original bumper, so it couldn't have been much damage. Its difficult to get a good match to steel (or aluminum, as this hood is) with a metallic paint on plastic bumper. But it can be done. My guess is outside in sun the match looks good. But the studio lighting brings out differences you normally wouldn't see.

$30k is about right, slightly on the high side but that’s what you pay for a clean version. The thing people should know is that conditions and miles don’t make a huge price difference anymore, go up to 34-35k and you can maybe find a 30-40k miles mint condition one. A 120-150k miles example will still run you 25-26k

Uhhh but S2000s did depreciate, they depreciated for many years, for a long time you could get a decent one in the teens and a great one in the 20s, then they went back up. Not to mention Hagerty didn't catch on to the original values of these. From a financial sense I didn't especially guess these would rocket up either, but indirectly this is one of those "cars I really liked" and 90% of those have become collectibles in the last 20 years.

​@@ekscalybur They were LOW back in 2010, but have been creeping up steadily for years and then they went way up during the pandemic (just like so many other enthusiast cars). I bought a 2004 S2000 in 2009 for $13k USD, which was $13k CAD at the time. Now that car would be about $35k CAD, which is some damn good appreciation, but putting that same money into an S&P 500 index fund would have yielded better returns without any running costs. People think cars are investments, but they aren't- even an S2k like this that exploded in value.

@@bradcomis1066 My Dad was thinking about getting an AP1 back in 2010 and I went with him to look at one that was listed for 14k. It was really clean but he got cold feet and didn't feel he could justify it. I told him he'd probably struggle to find a better deal than that. He's brought it up a few times since.

Personally i don't think their worth the money. Besides the beautiful high revving engine which is the main reason you would get one. Parts availability is now a huge issue with everything being backorder/discontinued. Most of these parts are s2k specific and don't share with other models. The car is 15+ years old and will need stuff like rubber seals, etc. I can't see the value going any higher than it is (though i might be wrong) when a new BRZ or Miata is worth about the same

I always thought the S 2000 was a pretty nice car, back in 2005 I thought about buying one new but I wanted something that was a little bit faster so I bought an SRT4. never regretted it.

Cars like this in this kind of condition are going to continue to rise in value because at the moment, they are still affordable to the modifiers. My son has essentially this car....04 with 81k miles in fully stock condition with all the vin tags. He's got a pile of Jays Racing parts along with KW coilovers and Rays wheels ready to "ruin" the car. He tells me that everything he's doing can be undone, so no drilling holes in the thing. Bumper cover replacements, and the like.
