Jason's history of the LandCruiser was accurate and nuanced, although as an Australian, I'm a little butthurt that Oz didn't get a mention within that history, so here's an addendum. In 1958, Thiess Contracting imported 13 LandCruiser FJs for work on the Snowy River Hydroelectric Scheme with Leslie Thiess citing that he was having supply issues getting enough Willys Jeeps and Land Rovers for the job. The LandCruisers weren't indestructible, with the Toyota plagued by front axle and gearbox issues, but the again, the American and British off-roaders also had their share of breakdowns. The difference lay with Toyota sending engineers to live at the mountainous construction site, flying parts back to Japan for analysis and redesign, then fitting improved parts when they arrived. Impressed, Thiess became the official importer of Toyota vehicles, and had sold 4000 units by 1964, with half of them being LandCruisers. By 1981, Australia had purchased 100,000 Toyota LandCruisers, and as at 2024, we've bought 400,000 heavy duty, 360,000 wagons and 305,000 Prado variants, for a total of just over a million, all of which benefited from prototyping and real-world development in Australia's outback. It's not an Aussie car, but we definitely influenced the LandCruiser to become the legend it is today.

Your tank is built better. More solid. Handles insanely better with KDSS. Has a lazy V8. Will never rattle. Has more legroom…just. Everything is better, aside from tech. 5 minutes in the new GX or LC, and if the cramped pain doesn’t set in, the shuddering, shivering, floats and bobs and rolls like a blown suspension old car “what is wrong with this thing?” Will. Drive some other stuff. Don’t be a brand cultist. After a terrible LX600, I downgraded to a massively more solid GX460. Then it had insane shuddering issues too, and I left the brand all together. Shame, as my ‘21 GX was flawless. Toyota now is nothing like it was. Their truck division is lost, and refuses to catch up to today.

There are some valid points in this video (rear package height) but the looks and feel of this truck are not as bad as this video sounds. The hybrid 4-cylinder engine makes plenty of power when needed. I feel like the previous Land Cruisers turned into million-dollar grocery getters and the 2024 is going a bit back to the LC200/100 roots. I was severely disappointed when the newest gen Land Cruiser introduced coming with only a 4 cylinder, but I was definitely most impressed with the amazing production Hagerty had on this video showcasing the lineage of Land Cruisers! The new GX550 is a jawdropping change in defining the Land Cruiser series that I'm happy being here to show the lineage truly continuing still despite the different name.

Actually Toyota copied jeeps design from WW2 and copied Chevy's i6 engine design. So credit really goes to the Americans who didn't punish the Japanese after the war but let them join the free market. Originally in Australia, Theiss Bros Ltd. were building the massive Snowy mountains hydro- electric dam and needed a fleet of 4x4s to ferry supplies up the mountain. They initially ordered 200 units over a period of 4 years -- paid in advance mind you; but both Jeep and Land Rover declined the contract! Toyota, eager to establish a reputation; tendered the contract and sent 50 LandCruisers apparently without at their own expense! Theiss Bros. Ah I am beginning to see why Toyota failed with this “Land Cruiser”. I am from Australia so it is a Prado over here, and I agree that it is rubbish. Toyota tried to take the Prado to the US market by making the Prado more Land Cruiser like, but in the process removed the things people liked about the Prado while failing to add the things people liked about the Land Cruiser. Thus in the end making this horrible monster, and in the Australian market it is worse, we don’t even get a full hybrid but a rubbish “mild” hybrid with ad blu😒. Oh and our Lexus variants cost a lot more on top of the already ridiculous price of this new Prado monster. The 105 series replaced the solid axle 80 series. Some people don't like the 100 series looks but if all the 80 series around you are rusted out Australia had the option of the 100 series body on an 80 series frame - the 105 series. It looked like a 100 series body wise, but had 80 underneath. The 100 - 200 - 300 was a new luxury wagon line made more for touring and towing. The 80 series ended 1997, the 105 series was 1998 - 2004 (5?) in Australia - where we got Toyota of Japan built imports so I can't speak for other local factories. But down here if you want an old solid axle off roader LC you have to first choose if you want the classic pre 1998 80 series look or if you don't mind a discount with a newer build date, likely better paint and less rust to buy a 105 series :)

Toyota didn't get the 2024 Land Cruiser wrong. Take a look at the middle east and asian countries where the actual LC300 is being sold. The actual beast is the LC300, the Prado is just made to make Americans happy with a smaller and kinda more city driven Land Cruiser. Americans didn't like the LC200 much, so Toyota didn't launch that, instead got the Prado.
@samuelharmoko25018 күн бұрын
the problem is the 250 is just obsolete because of the gx
@prayasdash18 күн бұрын
I wouldn't disagree, the GX certainly boasts a more captivating design and superior features compared to the 250. People might draw similar comparisons between the LC300 and the LX600, as the latter offers significantly more luxury and advanced technology than the J300 Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser, true to its heritage, remains minimalistic and purpose-built. It’s equipped with just enough features for daily usability, catering to an entirely different audience. If features are your priority, the Lexus version or a Range Rover would be more suitable choices. However, the Land Cruiser is designed for a raw, unfiltered experience. Having seen the LC300 multiple times, I must say its sheer presence and appeal are unmatched. It appears substantially larger than a typical Defender or even a Range Rover. But beyond its commanding presence, the Land Cruiser excels in off-road capability, which remains its defining characteristic. Interestingly, the LC250 Prado seems to offer more features than the LC300, which highlights Toyota’s different approach to the models. Perhaps Toyota could have considered launching the LC300 in the U.S., but they opted to introduce a more feature-rich version instead. So...ya

@prayasdash "did not like" and "couldn't afford" are two different things. When a 4Runner could be had for $36,000 and Land Cruiser 200 was $86,000, thats quite a stretch for many. Then you have the Sequoia, that was even bigger and could be had for $55,000 or there about. That's not even going into GX460s or LX570 (the latter of which had the same msrp as a 200 so of course more people who could afford an $86,000 vehicle - chose the Lexus).
