Want to know how to haggle? Want to know what it’s REALLY like travelling Asia during corona times? In this video I tell you some tricks/hacks and tips on how to get things for cheap in South-East Asia as a falang (foreigner). I go to Phosi market in Luang Prabang, the largest in the area, to buy some warmer floaters as it’s very cold in the north of Laos at this time of year.
I met some locals that were having a little party and they invited me to get drunk with them. I think they tried to kill me with rice wine or Lao Lao as it’s called here.

@@dejligestina I got to Laos on the 13th of March. Was heading for Vietnam and made a last minute decision to visit a mate in Don Det for 2 weeks. Did you leave just before lockdown? Yeah I love my khmer/Hindu temples. Do you know of any up north like wat phou?

I was there a year prior to lockdown.. Watching your videos makes me wish i currently was under lockdown there haha.. Unfortunately i don't know about other Khmer temples in Laos, but there should be lots of Hindu temples.. I have been curious if there's interesting things to see further north than Luang Prabang but have not been there yet.. Must be some really rural unspoiled nature up there.

craig, one you are accepted to drink/eat with anyone in lao, you are in; it's so tough to get out of the "drinking circle" we called it in lao. also, if you ever even want to enter into that inner circle like a family... its when you start asking what do you want to eat and start buying foods or drinks at the drinking circle. game over!

Hi Craig, me again. I watched this video yesterday, it made me laugh. It’s so hilarious drinking with local while you both side not completely understood each other languages. Hope you got home safely. Overall, I’m impressed with your manners, you are so polite as I could see that There were many times that you were in awkward situation ( from my view) but you kept remaining politely to them👍. I’m from thakhek but I left after 16 for uni in Vientiane after first three years in there I left Vientiane for uni in Thailand. Anyway,what I’m trying to say is in khammoune province, there is Namtheun 2 dam reservoir area that you might be interested to see as it’s a tourist area and then you can drive through the tham kongloh konglor cave. Please take care and good luck ☺️

@True Budget Travelling my introduction about kong lor cave was quite short. Sorry for that. In my perspective it’s better to have a car to drive there( I knew you can catch the bus there but it would be more convenient to have a car ir your own vehicle) as it’s far and out of no where. Some rent a motorcycle from Thakhek to get there but it’s far though. But it’s worth to see a different and how amaze the river under the cave and local people are using that route to transport and transfer supplies for their livelihood. LP is a nice place. You’re lucky to be there 😊🌸

At 19:00 when you said Craig the guy in the background thinks you're saying koay, which is "me". Thats why they think it's funny because they're asking your name and it sounds like you're answering with "me". So he's joking and saying "an knee koay, an nun choaw." Basically saying, "this is me, that is you (and pointing to someone else)." But your subtitle is correct in that koy (slightly different pronunciation) is penis. But that wasn't what they were thinking. Also, when you were asking about the guy in the black jacket's wife, the others were saying he has two wives. Song (✌️) mea. That's why when you asked "how long" the lady jokingly corrected you and said "(you mean) how many people?"
@Craig_Black
@Craig_Black 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to reply with so much information, I really appreciate it. It’s how I learn. 😊 I didn’t know you could have two wives in Laos! Is this legal or first wife is a legal wife and second is wife in heart but not law?
@chadd9748
@chadd9748 3 жыл бұрын
@@Craig_Black I don't know if it's legal but it happens lol. Some guys will have a mea (wife) and a mea noy (literally translated to wife small or small wife. Basically a mistress. So the second "wife" isn't married to him). He might just be joking about his situation but I know it happens. The guy in the black jacket was really drunk at the end so I couldn't understand him but I don't think the lady in pink hates foreigners. I think stuff got lost in translation because his English wasn't great. Glad you made it out of there and home safe. That's one thing I'm not a fan of in Lao drinking culture. The host wants to keep giving you drinks and it's hard to leave as a guest because you feel bad. I've even had to fake pass out before so someone could carry me out to the car so my wife could drive us away from there 🤣

@@chadd9748 wow I’m gonna look out for this. Often I’m in the market and a lady will tell me to marry her daughter. I say I have a wife and they often say something like take two. I always laugh it off as a joke but now I don’t know.. 🤣 I read somewhere that Laos drinks the most out of all the Asian countries. It’s so hard to get away, sometimes people get offended when their very drunk and you keep trying to leave. It can be awkward but I’m bored of just going to tourist traps all the time. I get more out of interacting with the locals.

@@Craig_Black Agreed - so frustrating! Fortunately Lao are good humoured - keep practicing. My Lao friends will talk using slang / local dialects. They will be inconsistent. "You 'kin beer lao' when speaking out loud, but 'deum beer lao' when writing it down. It can be hard to get a critical response. "Did I say say 'rat' correctly?" will always result in a "Yes!" Thanks to Asian 'refusing to confront/ saving face' mentality. The above can be rewritten as "Did I make a noise?" - "Yes!" And when talking between each over - "Arh so quick! Cannot!" Think how English accents vary - Aussies, Yanks, refined folk from Brighton, country bumkins from Northamptonshire. I am hopeless at saying the ng consonant. (ງົວ, ເງິນ) What does "boh hoo" mean? I keep getting the reply "Don't know". As I repeat - lovely people. So learn the following important phrases: ຂ້ອຍຊັງເຈົ້າ (I hate you) ຂ້ອຍບໍ່ສົນໃຈເຈົ້າ (I don't care about you) [Say that with a Terry Wogan accent too.] Watch their beautiful brown eyes dissolve into laughter. Keep practicing! boh peng yang der sok dii
