One thing to note about how Kageyama, Sugawara, and Coach Ukai were not keen on Hinata's idea of experimenting in midair is that all three of them are setters. They weren't quite seeing it from Hinata's perspective as a middle blocker specializing in quicks.

Actually there are times when hinata tried to open his eyes while in the air for fast quicks so, there are times he actually saw the other side of the court and saw the light where its best to spike to ball. But kageyama insist on saying that they don't need hinata's "will" on fighting mid-air cause everytime he tries to open his eyes to see where to spike best, he failed everytime because he couldn't multitask on jumping high, spiking and aiming his attack and also the fact that the quick attack is so freaking fast. So its impossible to do all that in a second. I think that's what kageyama is trying to say.
@TrianaNero3 жыл бұрын
The way Furudate (the author) writes conflict in Haikyuu!! is truly something else. It's not silly misunderstandings where you get frustrated with the characters just acting stupid; it really makes you think, "Oh shoot, they're both right somewhere". I can't help but appreciate it a lot as it helps get invested in the story. It makes sense why Kageyama doesn't want to get invested in trying out the new quick - Hinata still lacks as an overall player, there are many things for him to work on, the competition is right around the corner, and even this quick with Hinata closing his eyes is something Kageyama didn't think is possible (and is only made possible by Hinata trusting him wholeheartedly). It's not like Hinata has outstanding technique to spike a toss going that fast either, which Kageyama knows more than anyone. [I'm talking about this particular point in time.] About Ukai not coaching "perfectly" in regards to that - it was kind of the author's intention, actually! They said that they came to realize that adults aren't really as "adult" as the author used to think, and they can be just as clueless, so they wanted to showcase that in the story. Hinata did see Oikawa, Daichi and Tsukishima when he was spiking - he does open his eyes during the minus tempo attack sometimes, but it's quite rare (with Daichi and Tsukishima he only did it ~after~ spiking). Much like he describes it in this episode, "he has his moments" (when he can see the blockers and everyone else more clearly than usual). Also, a more literate translation of Hinata's phrase: "It wasn't that he was the first friend I've made. It felt like I found/made a partner". We already had a bunch of examples showcasing that Hinata differentiates between friends and teammates, since he lacked the latter for such a long time. If memory doesn't fail me, Coach also spoke about how the bond between teammates is in a way more special (more unique for sure) than that between friends. I have come across two pro athletes, Yuzuru Hanyu and Javier Fernandez, where the latter actually claimed that they aren't friends at some point, putting more emphasis on their rivalry, even though they behave ~very~ friendly at competitions and when interacting with each other (and I mean, very friendly). So this kind of rivalry/camaraderie when you share such a burning passion for something really is something very special, making Hinata all the more upset when he thought he finally found it, and yet it felt like it was slipping away.

The thing that made this fight so emotional to me was that neither of the duo was blaming the other. Both of them were claiming it was their fault that the quick failed and they thought they needed to be the part that needed fixed. Kageyama thinks it was his fault that the set wasn't in the right place to get around the block. Hinata thinks it was his fault that he wasn't able to aim around the block. They both said that they thought the other was already doing exactly what they were suppose to. To explain volleyball like positions and rules. What makes it difficult is that, he thinks that explaining those things makes the readers bored. Coach, something that I didn't notice in that conversation between Hinata, Sugawara, Kageyama, and Ukai until a couple of rewatches down the road is that Hinata was the only spiker in that conversation: Suga, Kageyama, and Ukai are *all* setters. They were all right about the fact that the most reliable way for Hinata to grow was to polish up the rest of his game, but literally none of them were taking that extra step of actually empathizing with how Hinata felt as a spiker who was told to his face that he was too weak to be trusted with the ball. Like, imagine for a second hearing from every setter on your team that your attacks are the most useful when you're closing your eyes! The other thing to consider was that Coach Ukai was literally not listening to Hinata at first. Coach Ukai kept saying "You mean you felt like you saw it, right?" but Hinata was describing specific instances where he opened his eyes during the weirdo quick and noticed that he could see *everything.*

As long as you don't mistake playing competitively and playing professionally. You can absolutely end up playing competitively when starting at 17. I wish I started when I was 17, in my case, I was 20. I am 27 now and have been playing competitively for few seasons now, albeit not necessarily high level, still, at a competitive level - National League 4 in the UK. True, the level of the volleyball in the UK is nowhere near the US, but, 100% competitive still in my opinion. If I had joined a university team earlier and put even more effort into learning volleyball, I am sure I could be playing in a League 3 or even 2. Best of luck!

your reaction to hinata and kageyama’s fight was so good. most reactors would immediately side with someone and demonise the other when in reality both of them have valid point with hinata wanting to level up and with kageyama thinking about the time they had before the tournament starts. if hinata brought this up months or even a year before the tournament, kageyama would’ve been completely on board because he has always had good student mentality and like hinata and practically everyone else in the show, he will grab every opportunity to improve.

I think what Kageyama and Sugawara are saying to Hinata boils down to “It’s not worth the risk trying to change an already powerful weapon.” Hinata wants to be able to make decisions in the air on his own, and not just be a weapon that Kageyama uses. But Kageyama doesn’t see any value in that, so he bluntly states that Hinata’s input doesn’t matter when it comes to the quicks. It’s frustrating for Hinata because he wants to grow and be able to compete on his own without being part of a matched set with Kageyama. But no one else on the team really understands that at the moment, so they’re just looking at how to maintain stability and improve by working on other weapons, with the “weirdo quick” remaining unchanged as the core of their offense.

19:00 it's important to note that those two were the only times Hinata opened his eyes during the freak quick. Well, for the three-on-three he opened his eyes after he hit, while for the match with Seijoh, he kept them opened the whole time but was entirely focused on Oikawa and thus was able to not get distracted from the ball.

One thing to point out is that the conflict of this episode portraits a common struggle for japanese people, specifically, japanese as students and workers: Innovation is scary. To do something never once tested is often treated as an insult to the ones that paved the way before and everyone has hammered down in their brains that all that they do must be for the sake of others. Not everyone has it in them to be so drastically against the norm. So... No... This isn't how japanese would usually solve their issues, quite the opposite, actually. I imagine that quite a lot of japanese boys and girls would feel enormous anxiety just by watching/reading the scene where Hinata has a fight with Kageyama. I think this is one of the greatest feats of Furudate as an artist. Not the fact that he's portraying the conflict in a relevant way for his own culture, but also because that, in future episodes, the way that these characters tackle the issue becomes something that can stick to the readers and grant them a sense of hunger and positive selfishness to think for yourself and do what you need to do instead of doing what others expect you to do for their sake. So pay attention to what's being told in-between the lines. This type of personal philosophy will undoubtedly be seen more often in the volleyball world in the near future due to Haikyuu's influence today.

In defense of Coach Ukai, this is literally his first time coaching and I think he's just between 20 to 30 years in age. Just like these high school kids who are in the cusp of puberty, Coach Ukai is also undergoing that transition most young adults go through where he suddenly finds passion in something he's originally averse to (remember, he previously denied numerous repeated requests to Coach the team because he felt like it's only his name they want). He's knowledgeable about volleyball, yes, but he is, by no means, emotionally-equipped in coaching a high school volleyball team because he still lacks the one thing you need to effectively use that knowledge of his: experience. This is precisely why Takeda-sensei is the best foil to Coach Ukai. He has never played volleyball nor does he have any knowledge in the sport prior to being the club advisor. But you know what he has that Coach Ukai doesn't? The experience in dealing with a high school student's emotions. This is one of the reasons why I think Haikyuu is a literary masterpiece.

Season 2 is my favorite season because of the training arcs. Most sports animes have training arcs, but it's always about learning a new "super move" or gimmik to improve. I think a huge reason why Haikyuu is so successful is because you feel how everyone's play changes realistically. Hinata has small but important moments of improvements to his game. Like the first time they played nekoma and hinata kept his eyes opened and learned how to take a normal spike.

its crazy how they managed to show two sides of the argument hinata and kageyama had and viewers can actually understand both sides. what a great storytelling it is

15:33 I was really looking forward to your reaction to Takeda-sensei's speech, since I've heard you say it in earlier reactions: that is, do you see these strong teams simply as opponents, or as inspiration and as mentors that you can learn from. In Haikyuu! (and from your advice, Coach Donny), one's attitude should definitely be the latter. And we often see this with Hinata where he initially looks like he might be intimidated by an opponent but instead he's actually thrilled that he's facing a new challenge. As for Japanese teachers drinking. In my experience as a high school teacher in rural Japan 30 years ago, I'd say that the portrayal is pretty accurate. Japan has a very strong social drinking culture that centers around work. Any Puritanical attitude is essentially American. Lev is Russian for lion. Nekoma's Yamamoto Taketora is the tiger. Tora

I really love that you are paying attention to Hinata's motivations and intent and not blowing it off as just seemingly random. Many reactors don't acknowledge that Hinata is GENUINELY trying to to be a competitor.

@Rafael Silva Daniel i guess u miss understood the scene. Hinata said kageyawa was a “partner” whis is more deep and higher than “friends” that’s why yachi teared up because she dont want hinata lost his partner because of this fight. That just how much hinata trusted kageyama

What’s also interesting on kageyama’s part is that this quick was the first thing that allowed him to be trusted again after his traumatic experience in middle school. Hinata wanting to change hurts him and he’s afraid of losing this maybe subconsciously, it adds a layer to their reasoning

Rewatching this episode reminded me of the line, " It wasn't that he was the first friend I'd made. He was a partner." and something I remember somebody had said. I don't remember it exactly, but they said that while Hinata was saying that, Kageyama was probably somewhere saying the same thing, but the other way round: "It wasn't that he was the first partner I'd made. He was a friend." *I think I'm going to cry*

One thing I love about these videos, aside from how entertaining they are, is the life lessons they teach. Coach Donny talking about how just showing up and playing isn't enough to truely improve in volleyball is applicable to many things. For me, I changed it to art from volleyball. Thank you for your wise words as always Coach.

Change can be scary. I'm learning piano in my late 20s. Right now I'm comfortable at playing the basics and reading music sheets. I can easily stay that way, but I want to expand my skills to playing by ear, writing musics, etc. My music teacher is a bit surprised, not a lot of people are willing to go that far, especially a hobbyist musician.

I love the way this episode shows that competitive nature even exists within teams. I remember the volleyball coach at my high school would always talk about how second string guys would always work really hard to get into the starting spot on the team and that makes the first team guys work harder to keep the spot they already have. I think something like this is good for teams as long a it stays healthy.

@Khay-773 жыл бұрын
What Hinata is talking about at 19:09 is in those moments he's referencing his eyes were open and he was able to see the details in slow motion like Oikawa's eyes as Hinata hit the ball right past him. There were moments he actually had his eyes open, it's just rare when he did and was able to connect.

Regarding the struggle of remembering characters names, I just wanna say that you're doing really well for your first viewing! One thing you can do is call them by their hair color and personality trait. One example is you can call Yamaguchi Tadashi "the green haired freckled kid from Karasuno" if you forget then you can listen for his name later. The only reason a lot of us Haikyuu fans know every character and team name is because we have watched Haikyuu many times. :) Haikyuu fans are actually KNOWN for watching Haikyuu over and over again. To the point a lot of us remember every characters full name, team, jersey number, even the episodes they show up in, and their appearance so well we can spot them from a mile away.

coach im sure that you already know this but karasuno isn't just about the players committing rookie errors and then learning and evolving through, but also if we are talking about managers yachi is in that learning stage of getting to know what volleyball is like, its the same with takeda sensei, and I commented upon this is because you pointed out earlier how coach ukai should have taken the stance to resolve that tension, and the thing is that even even he is a rookie coach its not like he has been doing it for a while, of course he has some knowledge upon it because of his grandpa, but still he is learning along with karasuno and is evolving as a coach :)

The episode title "Greed" is actually really clever and a fitting description for this episode. Hinata becoming greedy by wanting to be better is awakening his teammates to also become greedy and become better. Greed isn't bad to an extent and at some points necessary for one to get better. I just love how it was being shown in the series. The moment of realization one has of "I want to get better but how don't know how to do that?" Is really relatable esp for someone without experience in certain things.
