I see this a lot with thrillers especially. It's rare to come up with original ideas anymore so a lot of authors recycle old ideas from other authors (or movies, shows, etc.), but put their own twist on it. It's how well they pull it off that makes the book unique though. I'm not validating what McFadden supposedly did or anything, but I see this subject talked about a lot in writing & publishing so I wanted to share. People can legally take someone else's story idea and even if the only change is the name of a few characters, they'll never get in trouble for it. It sucks, but it happens all the time.

I read The Last Mrs. Parrish in February and loved it so much. I read this one in March (had no idea there were any similarities going into the book) and when I finished I was like, “Wow ok. So same plot but not nearly as good.” But it also kept me flipping pages and it was a fast read.

The Housemaid was recommended to me by 2 people, both saying they read it in like 12 hours, so I was super excited to read a page-turner. I didn’t look into it at all so I could go in blind. It was checked out of my library, so in the meantime, I picked up The Last Mrs. Parrish. Best book I’ve read in a while! Then, I got the Housemaid right after, unaware of that it was the same premise. The only reason I read it so quickly is because I was waiting for it to get good (and the chapters are short, which I think she did on purpose to make it a quick read), meanwhile noticing the similarities. Then, with the perspective switch, I knew it was a rip-off. I was angry the entire time I read it! The Broadway show and IUD storylines were exactly the same, and overall it was just a shittier version - not as well written with lack of character development and build-up. I will not be reading McFadden again!

I so appreciate you doing a vlog on Freida McFadden. I love her books. The first one I read from her was The Locked Door. This book did not get a ton of attention. Then a few years later A Flicker in the Dark came out which is almost exactly the same. I liked them both. The author of The Hunger Games Suzanne Collins’ was accused of copying Battle Royale. I’m sure many authors have taken ideas from other authors and made it their own. Not saying it’s right, but Frieda wouldn’t be the first. I read The Last Mrs. Parrish first and gave it 3.5 stars. I gave the Housemaid 5 stars. I liked the female characters in the Housemaid better than TLMP. The midway twist was exactly the same, but I think what Freida did with the ending was a lot different than TLMP. BUT I will say this, spoilers below…. A LOT of authors have the abusive/cheating husband twist. I can name so many, but I don’t want to spoil which ones they are. It almost made me not want to read domestic thrillers at all. So there’s nothing really original.

I really really enjoyed the Housemaid. But I have not read the last Mrs. Parrish. I don’t know if that eliminated me from having an opinion about McFadden, but I have thoroughly been enjoying her books. They average 4/5 for me. What attracts me so much to her writing style is truly the short chapter. As a healthcare worker who also works a second job, my time is precious and sporadic. So feeling like I’m flying through a novel is extremely appealing to me. 😂🤷🏻♀️

I’ve been looking for someone on book tube to talk about this because I couldn’t believe no one was talking about plagiarism with these books. Yes people can have similar ideas and plots but for it to be so similar beat by beat and executed almost exactly the same until the very end is suspicious. As a scholarly critic I analyze books with similar ideas and plots all the time something can have the exact same concept and still be incredibly different in how it’s carried out. I just don’t think it’s ok. Yes it’s enjoyable but I think it’s because she took an existing book and improved in a few aspects, like making the housemaid character have more nuance. The Last Mrs Parrish is much better written though.
