It is hail not snow. You wouldn't hear snow hitting the windows. It's not very common to hail this much but it is not very common to have 20C in December either. Both are extremes and unusual. The average is probably around 15 or so. The sea is about the same. January and Feb are slightly colder though.

Kind of. I was there New Year 1989 / 1990, on Gozo and it was brutal that night. But the hail wasn't as bad as this.
