I would rather see the military in charge of policing than see the current policemen and woman with firearms. As a former soldier I am well aware of the level of responsibility required when armed and I simply do not trust the police force in it's current state to be armed.

I ran a S1 firearms club , based in East London with around 30 members , including police officers and ex military types all from the East London and surrounding areas, and that during the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland and mainland UK . We used to compete against the Police at various ranges around London and Home Counties. At one time or another I owned several semi auto rifles in 7.62 and 5.56 NATO, several 357 Mag revolvers , a Browning GP35 in 9mm , a Glock 17 in 9mm , semi automatic shotguns all disposed of legally after the 1988 and 1997 Firearms (Ammendment )Acts . Great fun and a great opportunity to socialise with the police and other sports shooters and sadly , something which todays youth and adults will never experience .

Until police stop policing in a two tier manner, we shouldn't entertain this. On a side note, I don't think officers should be armed, unless it can be much easier to be armed for the average person. sadly though, when armed officers shoot, they get called racist. Look at the Caba case last year. Young black boy recently out of jail, in a car linked to a gun crime. Cops put their lights on to speak, and Caba floored the car, mounted the pavement and tried to run over a mother with a double pram with two new borns in. Then turned and drove right at a cop who put one bullet in Caba's head after yelling 3 times to stop. Cop then gets called racist by Hope Not Hate and the BBC, and later was arrested for "racially motivated homicide." Cops are being prevented from doing their job in the UK, plain and simple. I know one whose handed his notice in over it. Said it got to the stage where, if the suspect is black, they either just dont respond to the calls anymore or call for backup and specify "have we got anyone thats a POC? Suspect is a POC, request a POC officer." And if ones not available? Let the suspect go. Dont wanna be called racist.

Mayor Guliani cleaned up New York with Zero tolerance for bad behaviour. It worked my daughter was there at the time. Even vigilant ies called the Angels helped the cops, and late at night on the subways people threatening women, would grab the guy and throw him off the line at the next stop. Incarceration for life is expensive. An inquest into wrongful shooting less so,, go figure. But he WAS armed, HAD KILLED, DID NOT surrender immediately. My compssion for him, and his family, has evaporated. My ethics are conflicted but I would never find a police officer guilty of wrongful shooting in these circumstances.

True. The modern low grade UK police officer is not of sufficient intelligence, (even with a degree), character or mental stability to be let anywhere near a firearm. This is the difference between European Police Officers and the UK’s low grade police officers.

Unfortunately, the physical and mental qualities of some police that I have seen make them a dangerous risk to the public. They would be an easy target as a supply of firearms. There was the young police officer running round in a street spraying pepper at innocent people whilst several officers stood and watched. One has only to look at the actions of the Met police in dealing with English people celebrating St, George's day by the police pushing and blocking and using mounted police in contrast to letting foreigners go where they want , waving their flags , unabated.

@mrgrizzlyrides I think it's coz I'm from Northern Ireland and all our police are armed that i cant imagine police not being armed and only having a taser for protection against a madman. Even if the police are called for a petty neighbour dispute over here they always carry a weapon and cudnt imagine it any other way. It gives the public that sense of protection and security

Many of the modern English police are now so low grade and downright stupid; despite or perhaps because of a university education that I, certainly should have grave concern for my personal safety should these people be routinely armed. This is because I could not be sure the officer was mentally capable and sufficiently intelligent enough to be able to carry a fire arm. Edit: Correct 2x spelling errors; altered by auto check.

If this guy was a mental case, then yes, it would still have happened, and so would all the crimes of passion and the terrorism. What would also have happened - given some of our miscarriages of justice - is that innocent people would have been executed. The death penalty is not a deterrent in the US, i don't know why people think it would be here.
