Hair Boom vs. Conventional Boom Demo

Here hair boom is compared to conventional boom in this demo done in the Bayou during the Gulf Spill 2010.

@booniecat7 This is BP sorbent boom, I checked on purpose. It's a good thing these BP's aren't for containment, would have been far more useless. Oil was sloshing under and over the boom far too easily for it to have any containment value. Containment booms have "skirts" that hang down 18 inches or so. And don't worry too much about nonprofits misleading the public about the benefits of synthetic oil based BP products. BP isn't a poor misunderstood company that needs your sympathy.

I have been collecting hair from the great people in st augustine Fl and bring it here to destin to help. I just have one thing to say is to everyone that has doubted. this project. even i wanted to donate my hair...and i'm from germany. the problem is, that those who caused the problem (BP) are not those who suffer from it (eco-system, people who live there). making people responsible for something will not solve the problem. solidarity is the key, people!

See the video before this one showing the collection system, with the flotations. There are 20 warehouses of hair booms waiting for weeks, all free. The prevent booms were up, the weather picked up and the oil all went right over the PETROLEUM PRODUCTS, instead of holding the oil. Instead of using something harmless and effective, the spray has made the wall of death down there. Now the need is floaters, sinkers and in between.

I wonder how the shape of different booms have something to do with the soaking effect. The hair boom in this clip sits perfectly across the container while the conventional one allows the oil to swirl around it. Would love to see similarly shaped booms tested.

@landfillbil That is one of the many reasons. Did you also know that BP and the company that produce the dispersments their using having many ties...one example is a coresponding board member?

How about oil in the ocean, like a pipeline break. Hair boom can adsorb the oil in this situation?

@kczelusniak I'm all for them cleaning up their own poo, but I think they will skimp in any way they can. If they're not accepting the boom (is that confirmed? that was my question.) maybe it's because a concerted effort among people who care and will sacrifice exposes them as the opposite of that.

Hair is free, organic and doesn't have residual costs such as increasing the cost of meat and feed if we used hay. Not expensive and many hands make light work.

I'm kinda confused... Boom is for preventing oil from moving past a point, and at the same time to move the oil to a location to collect it. They already use things like hair and hay for collection purposes, but I don't think they call them booms. Is this video suggesting they replace the booms that are acting like boundrys or walls with hair? We already don't have enough boom to properly contain the spill, upping the cost isn't a solution. If they mean for collection, its already used.

this also works so well because hair doesnt absorb water, only the oil! It is why during WWII blankets and rope and such were made out of hair cut from the Jewish Prisoners... the other boom looks to have retained water as well, causing it to have less room for oil. this is awesome.

The point shouldn't be which boom absorbs better. It's that the hair booms work at least as well as conventional materials. There are literally warehouses of hair boom ready to go along the Gulf Coast. The Matter of Trust has been offering them to BP and local Parishes for free. Some of the Parishes are interested but BP isn't willing to try them (at this writing). The spill is so big; let's use everything we've got. Please.

Then the hair absorbs so much oil that it is no longer boyant overcoming the specific density of the surrounding sea water (with waves even) and sinks to the bottom. Then you've got a long lasting bottom pollution that will destroy the crustacean and shellfish population for years to come. Oil booms are engineered by engineers who are trying to make the most effectively solution possible. They care about the environment and understand the science required to succeed. Let them do their jobs.

What irrates me about this video is how misleading it is: sorbent boom is not made for recovery, it is made for containment. The surface area is less, and it has a much lower absorption rate specifcally so that it will not "soak up" all the oil and soit will remain floating...A demo showing hair verses a synthetic menas actually designed for recovery (sorbent pad or roll maybe? Particulate?) would be a much more accurate demonstration...and a much less misleading video.
