When I heard about wigs as being an acceptable head covering, my first reaction was like: NO WAY! Are you serious? And then I thought. "I don't get it." Then it was explained and I was like, "Ok. That does make sense. When I lived in Maine, my Mom was a beautician and I remember her sometimes wearing a wig. In the past I've had negative views on wearing a wig because it was looked at by some people as "trying too hard" or "not being honest" about how they really look. Or, "they're not natural", but I can see from the many examples in modesty that I've seen over the past few years, that this is a great option. I just asked my husband what he would think of me if I wanted to cover my hair. And he said, "How long are we talking?" "Would you wear a head covering all of the time or...?" I told him all of the time and he said that as long as I am happy with that decision that he would be happy too. Thank you for taking the time to explain to everyone these different styles.

Love your videos. I'm in the hospital with my daughter who is pretty sick (and disabled) and we've been watching them all. She's had 2 shabatot in hospital now so we found some electric tealights. We did pesach and shavuot in hospital as well. Just wanted to say watching has distracted me from all the hospital stuff. Love from UK.

@@jaroffireflies thankyou. She has cerebral palsy and epilepsy and is wheelchair dependent. I take all food into the hosptal as there's no kosher food. She is tube fed so we don't need to worry about that. It does look like she can come home soon on antibiotics through a picc line until she can get surgery to remove the infection. I cant wait!

Totally understand what you mean about having eyes on you with a scarf. I covered at my last job, which in the kitchen was part of the uniform, but when I would change out of the hat into a scarf it seemed like all eyes on me in the hallways.

Great video! I love watching each week and learning something each time. I'm not sure if you've done a video about this previously, but I'd be interested to see a video about the "little things" you do before Shabbos like: how to set the timers (if you use them), how you use the hot plate & are able to eat hot food on shabbat, pre-ripping toilet tissue/paper towels, how you use the water urn on shabbos, etc.

Thank you, Chana, for sharing this! I started covering my hair about 12 years ago. I love this Mitzva! It is a constant reminder of my relationship with Hashem. It keeps me focused on honoring Him at all times. I also love that my hair is something private that I would only share with my husband (when, or if, I marry again). I, too, prefer tichels, usually the pretied but I also like triangle and square folded into a triangle scarves. I live in Florida where it gets extremely hot, wet and sticky for many months of the year. I know you, in Texas, live with that type of weather as well lol. I don't know how my friends wear their sheitels on days like that. I know I can't so I just wear the tichels. I'm so looking forward to your tiichel try-on video next week!

I just wanted to come back to this video and tell you how much i truly appreciate you and your videos about hair covering. Let me explain (hopefully briefly, lol). I was diagnosed with uterine cancer Jan 3 2024. I started chemo in March and, naturally i have lost 95% of my hair. I was really struggling with having to wear a wig/head covering and believe me i am very aware they are two entirely different things! But as i was sitting on the couch tears streaming down my cheeks, looking at all the scarfs on Amazon & Etsy for some reason you popped into my head! Lol. And i remember thinking Well she looks so pretty and she covers her head all the time. I also follow another Jewish mom who also wears beautiful tichel’s. So i just wanted to say that you really reach people on here even when you may not think so. And again I really understand they are not the same scenarios at all, it was just the idea of it i guess that was bothering me. Idk. Anyway, i just wanted to say thank you, you’ve provided strength when i really needed it. 🧡😊

So interesting to learn more about this from you! I'd be interested to hear more about men in your family/community covering their heads - are there rules/customs for them about what they cover with? Do they do it pretty much all the time the same as you? Do they wear kippot for different reasons than you wear a scarf/wig?

Great questions! Yes, men wear a kippah but it is something they do all the time regardless of marriage which is why you see kids wearing them, but you don’t see young Jewish girls covering their hair. They wear it all the time also except when sleeping / bathing. The kippah is worn because it is a sign of Jewish pride / recognition and as a reminder that G-d is above us. Love how you answer and explain things! Quick questions where did you find your snood (with the twist and decoration.)? Would it still be something to find online? I cover my hair and would love to find that style... All I have found in snoods are crocheted or just plain and I enjoy simple yet pretty ways to head cover. (I usually just use large square scarves)

I have alopecia so I do have two lace front wigs. They do look very natural and people can't tell they are a wig. However, I am much more comfortable in scarves as wigs seem itchy for me personally.

It’s neat to hear the differences on who can/can’t see your hair in different communities/parts of the world. I was brought up that the people who can’t see your hair are men/boys who could potentially marry you (not that you would lol). Like I can be around my mother in law without a hair covering but must be covered around my father in law, as well I can have my hair showing around my son but not around his friend etc. I’d love to see a tichel collection video sometime :)

The conflict I personally run into with hair covering is that if I'm trying to avoid undue attention, much like you pointed out, wearing a hair covering will achieve the exact opposite in a lot of the world. Also, I'm concerned about insufficient sun exposure and damage to my hair and hair follicles due to long-term covering, whether it be with a scarf, hat, or wig.

Understandable. I find my hair to be very healthy because I cover it. And because hair blocked sun anyways, I don’t personally find that to be an issue. Hopefully that assuages some of your concerns :) I definitely find the scarves more comfortable, but love the invisibility of he wig at times, especially at times like we have these days 😪

Jewish women who aren’t married and cover their hair are doing something they aren’t required to (unless they are widowed or divorced).

@@neurodivergentwolf I would never ask anyone to cover their hair. I have many Jewish married friends who don’t cover their hair and I’d never even bring up the topic unless they asked me first. As for a non Jewish friend, they have no obligation in my religion to cover their hair so I’d never ask them either :)

Question for future video. Did you dress modestly before becoming Jewish? Did you find it hard to get used to dressing modestly/never wearing pants ? Did you need to relearn how to do certain things in order to adjust to a long skirt? I feel like I would struggle getting used to a skirt while hiking

The rules are very interesting - I have a friend who is Muslim and she only covers when someone of the opposite sex who is of age and not immediate family is around. Fascinating cultural differences.

I cover my hair because I have hated my hair for much of my life lol. It's sad that it started that way but I have since found a new love for both my hair and hair covering. I'm Catholic so it's not really a religious thing, although I've heard of some Catholic women practicing "veiling," but it doesn't seem to be common among Catholic lay women. I started being fascinated by the practice of hair covering a couple of years ago when I started watching KZbin channels of some Messianic Jewish people. I bought a few hair covers, and I've found it to be the most comfortable than anything else I've ever done with my hair. Then a year and a half ago, I got cancer, lost my hair to chemo, and already had what I needed to cover my head, even bought more lol. My hair has since grown back and I have no desire to stop wearing hair covers. My favorite cover is a snood.

I cover also. If I'm in my own community no one blinks an eye because many women wear different types of coverings, and everyone is kind and respectful. However, outside my community we've had people act extremely uncomfortable / rude around us. To the point they get up and leave, or stop talking when we walk into a shop, refuse to bag groceries, and some have even taken pictures behind our backs.

Hi Chana! Thank you for this very informative video, it answered a lot of my questions about hair covering for women in Judaism (and I saw that you talked about men hair covering in the comments so thanks for that too!) I wouldn’t have imagined it was so much different from what we do in Islam, we are required to cover our hair only in the presence of men we can marry (there is an actual list of men we can’t marry to whom we can show our hair, which includes our sons, our father, father in law, brothers, and some others, and we are allowed to show our hair to women and our husband of course), so as long as no such man is around us we can uncover (at home with no guests for example), but we are still required to cover what’s between our breasts (included) and our knees (included) around everyone that is not our husband or a very small child. We also have to cover our hair in mosques and I believe cemeteries too 🙂 As for men, they have to cover everything that is between their belly button (included) and knees (included) except around their wife and a very small child ☺️ Do you have trouble getting people to believe you when you say you like covering your hair? Because I feel that no matter how and how many times we could say it, people would still think that we’re trying to persuade ourselves it’s cool and that we don’t actually like it 😐🤣

I think modesty means not standing out too, so definitely I find thst wearing a wig in places that u would standout is more modest. Me personaly, I wear everything and anything that covers all my hair including baseball caps, beans, scarfs, wig, half a wig & ribbon, ponytail wig and haf scarf, swimming cap, straw hats.... Whatever. Its a mood thing or when in Rome thing. Some times it's a fun accessory and sometimes I just want to go rest on my room to take it all off. Oh yes, wigs are very expensive. They range from $1k-$3k and up! But they last many years so you don’t need to purchase often :)

I have a really strange question. It popped into my head. 😂 So, I had a friend once explain what a Gett was. If it should happen, would a woman still cover her hair after the parting of ways? Also, do women who never marry ever wear head coverings?

Only married women have the obligation to cover their hair. Divorced women and widows that I know do still cover their hair but exceptions can be made.

It’s just not a thing for Jewish unmarried girls to cover their hair. Sometimes little girls will try on head coverings at home or while playing house.

I heard it's mostly a Sephardic v Ashkenazi thing idk if just my family but i noticed in Sephardic Jews they tend to not like wigs as hair coverings while Ashkenazi tend to accept wigs. I'm not sure if maybe just what ive seen though. Love the video ✡

I definitely try to match my scarves to my outfits or to accentuate them or play off each other in some way. I do not have specific scarves for specific outfits. I have enough basic colors that anything I purchase should have something in my scarf box that will match it :)

I bought mine on Amazon, just regular candlesticks. I added the glass bulbs and filled those with oil, and use floating wicks. Hope that helps!

I made an interesting discovery during the last year. I began "half covering" my hair with beautiful and comfy scarfs or bands, actually without any religious reason. After some time I noticed that I felt less self secure without it. It felt more and more like a "hug", it gives me a kind of protected and nice feeling, also more female in a way, hard to explain ... And by now I have 12 different ones and somehow can't stop it. I feel more free this way. My family and friends are quite irritated by it though. Can you relate? 🙂🙏❤️🙂

I can relate! My faith community doesn't require women to cover their heads or hair, and I hadn't tried it until last year. When I cover, I find myself more focused on my tasks, more intentional in my family relationships, and more aware of my faith. I do feel more connected to my femininity when I cover my hair.

I know my Christian friends who cover their hair get some mixed responses from friends and family and community even. I am not totally sure why that is... I am glad you are doing what feels right to you in regards to hair covering!

That is a great question. I don't feel like I am an expert on wigs by any means, but I would say to expect to pay at a little over $1k (they can go up from there). I would make sure you are looking at a Jewish wig maker (sheital macher). I say this because the first wig I purchased I got from a regular wig store, not a jewish one and it turned out to be basically a waste of money. Try on a lot of wigs, and get something that is similar to your own hair, you will most likely be most comfortable in that. I hope that helps!

It’s not a different level, it’s just the custom of some. And even when it is your custom, it’s my understanding that exceptions are made if you really don’t want to do it.

Chana, does wearing a hair covering affect your natural hair? I have heard some ladies say it can make your natural hair thin. Loved hearing all about this ...very interesting. Some days it would be nice to have that option.:)

In my experience, that has not been a problem. I have not heard from any of my friends that its been an issue for them either. And we totally talk about those things :)

I don’t know if it’s Halacha, it’s just going to reach a point where they won’t see me in situations when my hair is showing. Right now they are young so there’s no such thing as privacy lol

oh well i learnt something new, i just assumed your hair covering was similar to a Muslim woman where its fine for your children and your mother/farther/siblings to see your hair or any other women in an only female space just not unfamiliar men to see your hair. good to get informed on that one.

Without revealing you're hair would you be comfortable showing how to tie your scarves ? Perhaps if you put your wig on and then showed us how you put the covering on over the wig ? Any time I've tried to west a head scarf it falls off or won't stay in place

Great question! Personally, I don’t. I have friends that do so they wear really loose ponytails or coverings that don’t involve hair ties like the snoods or pre-tied scarves

Great question! A widowed or divorced woman would still cover her hair because she still was a married woman and the obligation begins when she marries and doesn’t end. There are exceptions to this, if it is thought it would hinder the woman’s chance of getting married, but a rabbi should be consulted about this. I know divorced women and widows who cover their hair. I don’t know of any personally who stopped. Hope that answers your question! :) Thanks for watching :)

@Cary Brown I am a Christian, and familiar with this scripture. After saying that women should not pray with their head uncovered, toward the end of the chapter it explains in verse 15, “her long hair is given to her as a covering.” So that means it is not required to wear some type of head covering over her hair, and her hair IS the covering for her head so she can pray and please God. It says in this chapter that women should have long hair and men should not. But it does NOT specify how long it should be, and does NOT say she should “never cut her hair.” But many groups of Christians interpret this admonition to not pray with head uncovered, to refer to a covering over the hair. And some groups take this to mean a woman should never cut her hair. Romans 14 explains the principle that if you believe something is wrong or required, (although the chapter refers to thinking it’s wrong to eat meat), then you should follow your beliefs and conscience. It’s between you and the Lord, and you are responsible for YOUR understanding and not for someone else’s. Chana here has pretty much said the same thing about having Jewish friends who are married and don’t cover, and unmarried friends who do cover. I hope this helps.

Culturally it’s just what we do. Think of it like that you wouldn’t not wear a shirt just because you were home alone. I look at it the same way :) We cover our hair like we cover other parts of our body. Does that make sense?

So I’m confused. You said covering your hair was the same as wearing a shirt to cover your breasts. It’s private. So I don’t understand wearing a wig. You are covering your hair with hair. The wig looks like hair. So would you wear a shirt to cover your breasts with a picture of your breasts on it? What’s the difference?

Must be hard in some respects not living in an area where there's not that large a Jewish community of whichever branch you follow to actually get shiekel's or Parva foods easily. Where you live are there Jewish food shops where you can your food stuffs? Are there Kosher butcher's and bakeries for example? Or Kosher supermarkets? In the Jewish communities here in London like Golders Green, Edgware, Stanmore, Clapton and Stamford Hill there are so many Kosher supermarkets, bakeries and butcher's along with restaurants to chose from! When I used to meet Mum from work we'd pop in to the Kosher bakery at the top of the road for bread and cakes (Friday and festival's mainly) which were gorgeous to eat! A lot of us gysher's used the bakery there too......I loved the mini challa rolls filled with cream cheese and smoked salmon!

We definitely have access to kosher food here. Any decent sized community will have kosher options. Smaller communities (meaning smaller than NY/NJ/LA/Miami, will have a kosher butcher at a regular grocery store with it’s own separate counter to sell only kosher foods. That’s super common in communities across the USA.

@@jaroffireflies completely different to here in the UK love...... The big supermarkets here do do a Kosher section but it's dried goods mainly. The Jewish communities usually shop at the Kosher shops for food and the non Jewish shops for everything else.

@@tracylawrence6872 well the States are much larger than the UK and we are a bit more spread out :) I’m sure that accounts for the difference. Larger communities have large all kosher grocery stores which are so fun to visit when I’m in a city which has one :)

It is more likely that an Azkenazi Jew will wear a wig, and it is more likely that a Sephardi Jew will wear a scarf / tichel, but it’s not a hard and fast rule and it’s not odd for someone to go against the norm. I have a friend who is very ashkenazi but has never worn a wig, and I know Sephardi Jews who will only wear a wig :) In general all kinds of Jews mix it up, some just lean more heavily to one type of covering than another. Hope that clarifies!

You are going to be so tired of the weird questions from me. Why not cover your hair before marriage? Especially out and about? And then after married, you can have you hair down with family only? Are your kids ever allowed to see your hair? Or it it more of a precaution just in case, like I don’t walk around nude because windows….😅 so you wear the covering all the time. It does make me really sad that it’s safer to wear a wig. Up here, people probably think you’re a Hutterite. I know I wouldn’t think twice. Also, say I came for dinner, would it be appropriate or considerate to wear my hair covered? Or is that cultural appropriation?

Only married Jewish woman are obligated in covering their hair according to Jewish law. But anyone can :)

i don't think God cares what people think about modesty. wonder what Moses did for his wife Sarah and how she covered her head without the use of a wig!! she is the standard we should live by, and of course she did not wear make up cause she was very modest.
