Finally! Someone mentions Baton Rouge. What a great debut. Follow up was solid. They worked with Jack Ponti who as co-wrote with Babylon AD and Alice Cooper on “Hey Stoopid”. One of the best songwriters of the era.

1990 was my first year of following music I found myself and not my Dads 70s hard rock. On cassette and vinyl I got pyromania, cherry pie, under tooth and nail, metallica and justice for all, slayer he'll awaits. I could go on for hours. I was 9 years old in 1990. I was jamming the tunes on my stereo and playing my Nintendo. Good times before I had the worries the would beset me 5 short years later. Great video as usual. I actually haven't heard of some of these bands. That's one reason I appreciate this channel, I get at least one new band to check out. I picked up the Tuff debut on vinyl at a little shop in Brooklyn.

So good to hear your take on Firehouse, Guru. My band got to open for Firehouse at a small (but iconic) club in Poughkeepsie, NY in the mid 90’s. Not only were they incredible live but at the end of the show they set up a table to meet and sign for everyone who wanted it. Even more mind blowing, they set up a second table right next to them and insisted my band join them. I was a new father and had left as soon as their set was done but I get to hear stories from my drummer and bass player to this day.

New here! Been on a hairmetal fix for 5 years now. I'm 41 so I lived through it but I was too young to understand. Anyway, I've been going through the years starting with Crüe, Ratt, Dokken, early Great White and developed an ear and a taste for it through these acts. Sadly I'm approaching the end of the discovery part of my journey... or so I thought! Late 80s early 90s had some really great bands! A lot of them only having one album but absolutely killing it! Just grabbed Trouble Tribe, Dirty Rhythm, McQueen Street, Hericane Alice and I'm totally digging it. I'm gonna go through your years videos backwards and see if I can find anything I've missed. Just settling down to 1990 right now!

You could actually do an episode like this for pretty much every year up to the present if you wanted to, Guru. It's amazing how many of these bands never really died out, but rather took a hiatus, or kept going under the mainstream radar, or broke up and either reformed or returned under different names with new projects. I mean, just a shortlist of classic bands who've kept the fire alive would include Enuff Z Nuff, Hardline, Dokken, Lynch Mob, Bret Michaels, Def Leppard, Winger, Stryper, and Whitesnake to name but a few. And that's not to mention newer acts like Lynch's The End Machine, The Defiants, Tokyo Motor Fist, Nestor, Cruzh, and many, many more. I bet theres a lot of fans out there who may or may not be out of the loop, who would love to discuss these great new releases still keeping Hair Metal alive and kicking.

I learned the hard way to nab these late 80’s/early 90’s hair metal band CDs as soon as I find them. Some of them are out of print and very expensive or hard to find so if/when these older legacy bands’ albums get re-released, grab them! Don’t sit on your hands and wait because next thing you know, it may no longer be available for sale or if it is, it’s become prohibitively expensive! I’ve found this to be true with new releases on Frontiers Records-they’ll release something by say, Stryper or some other 80’s band and within 6-12 months, it’ll become out of print.

I remember that for about one hot minute the Quireboys seemed poised to become 'the next big thing' but very quickly got overtaken by The Black Crowes as the undisputed kings of that whole Rolling-Stones-Roots-Rock scene. They started out strong but got lost in the shuffle real quick. If you dig that sound at all, a really good act from I think, 93 was Cry Of Love with the album Brother. Very solid release with some great tracks who should have gotten a lot more love, but got unjustly buried and forgotten beneath the Alternative landslide.

Thunderstruck was also in the movie Varsity Blues; when the team lost due to the main characters being hungover. As for Poison, I think Flesh & Blood was their best album. Their first album felt so cheesy, second one was somewhere in between, and this one a more refined and mature (but still upbeat) sound. Native Tongue definitely took a left turn; even though I like Ritchie Kotzen's other stuff. Firehouse I didn't care for; mainly because of their ballads that were played to death. Nelson also got big right around the same time and was still called hair metal, so that didn't help either.

Thunderstruck, The Thunder Rolls and Enter Sandman are what took down hair metal. Not Smells like Teen Spirit or Alive. Look up Garth Brooks' album sales from the early 90s. He was crushing Nirvana and Pearl Jam without MTV airplay.

Love that movie. Flesh and Blood definitely was the most complete Poison album--not as much filler as the first two. And I'm right with you on Firehouse... liked their rock stuff, but those ballads fuckin' seemed to turn me off of them a bit.

The "God save the Queen" vocal-less outtake from Flesh & Blood pretty much explains the creative rift between Brett and CC. CC wanted the simplistic raw punk rebellion and Brett wanted southern rock meets Bon Jovi. Turns out CC was instinctively in the right(who knew Green Day was coming?) but in the short term, Brett's style pushed millions more sales for Poison.

I bought Crowes Shake Your Money Maker with some money from my 12th Birthday. It would be my pivot point , as what I loved would be driven out soon by MTV and Seattle . I grew up with my old man playing CCR , Allman , LZ , Stones , Faces , … so the pivot was DNA . Black Crowes or my favorite band by far from my generation . I still think the genre held on til 92 or 93. The staples like GnR , Motley , Ozzy with Zakk , AC/DC and VH . I would find bands like Four Horsemen and Cry Of Love and Drivin and Cryin .. not hair metal , not Seattle , just good .

You guys hit all my mine except for one. Don Dokken's "Up From the Ashes" was released in 1990 and is a great album. Not a bad track on there. John Norum and Billy White on guitars and Don played some guitar as well. "When Some Nights", "Stay", "Mirror, Mirror", and "Crash and Burn" are some of my faves. The ballad "When Love Finds a Fool" is really good too. Poison's "Flesh and Blood" is a masterpiece. CC Deville's guitar tone and solos never sounded better. He plays one of his best solos on "Life Goes On". FYI that song was largely written by CC. He was having some girlfriend troubles and Bret told him to make a song about it as a therapy tool. Regarding Slaughter: I actually prefer the acoustic version of "Fly to the Angels" on the album even though I love the electric version also. There is an amazing unplugged performance on MTV where Mark just kills it live.

I'd say 1991 was.. Nirvana came out of nowhere as a new band to everyone when Smells like Teen spirit released. They weren't instantly more popular than Guns N Roses who were the biggest band still when Nirvana came out. The Use Your Illusions 1&2 initially was a bigger album than Nervermind. Your talking the follow up to one of the best selling rock albums ever in Appetite. I don't believe Nirvana got more popular than GNR until 1992-1993 maybe even after Kurt unfortunately passes away because throughout the whole 90's decade Nevermind would continue to be a big album while by the late 90''s it wasn't as cool to be a GNR fan anymore. 1990 is the bonus year of the 80's. Nothing 90's about the year 1990 lol Still the 80's.

I've been touting Baton Rouge's debut for decades now. One of my favorite debuts. Speaking of that, you guys really need to check out the self titled WAR BABIES album. Came out about the same time and it rocks from top to bottom. Train Train should have been a B-side and Thin Disguise should have been on the album. I will die on that hill. Sorry but TT is awful and cover tunes in 1990 are a waste of time. That and the bullshit 'Ode to Tipper Gore' were a goddamn waste of time a space on an otherwise great album.
