At my worse I wouldn’t even sleep. Just stay up for three or four days with the curtains closed drinking scotch and cans of Stella. Ordering more in for delivery when running low. 10 months sober now and honestly don’t miss it at all. Took the mother of my child leaving for me to finally wake up. Unfortunately it was too late to save that relationship but life is much better sober.

If you've had a particularly heavy drinking session or have been drinking on a weekend bender, then I found waking up to reality was very hard. I didn't want to carry on drinking but the anxiety of being sober was overwhelming. So i had no choice but to have a drink to straighten myself out.

I think in my subconscious I know that if I were to ever have just one more drink my body wouldn’t cope, so I choose not to drink, not eat anything with alcohol. The saying ‘Name your poison’. Well go on. What’s yours? Beer, wine, champagne, vodka, whisky, gin?? It’s all the same poison just different flavours and pretty packaging. Try it and you’ll see that you don’t need alcohol to be your best self!! Truly.

I remember it being a particularly bad time when I started drinking before work and sneaking off to pound drinks in the bathroom while at work. I was already drinking everyday after work, in fact I was working at a bar and we were given a free shift drink at the end of the night. Which would often get refilled at least a couple times.

This is how a person ends up physically dependent. And let me assure you: withdrawls are waaaaaay worse than a hangover. Massive anxiety, panic attacks, shaking, drenched in sweat, rapid heart rate, palpitations and possible arrhythmia. Possible audio, visual, and tactile hallucinations (like a real bad acid trip but worse and quite personal). And if you’re really unfortunate seizures. If you’re really really unfortunate full blown delirium tremens which is basically a type of psychosis combined with a heart rate and blood pressure that can and does kill people. Probably sounds like I’m exaggerating but I have experienced all of these except seizures and DTs and many in the recovery groups (sober 1 year and change now) have also.

I started tracking all my drinking 5 years ago, then started to track units I drank. It has helped me take control of my drinking & get to the point I can now not drink 4 days a week and not drink as much when I do drink. It means I have not had to give up drinking, it really helped me. Sometimes there is more than one way to deal with the situation. If I had given up, I know drinking would end up like a switch…either on off and when it was on, I would drink dangerous levels.

Glad this video got some traction. Appeared in my feed, i don't know you, but i see the pain in your face when you talk. Flashes of an element of shame in there. Thank you for putting yourself front and centre. Important information, and an easy introduction in how easy it is to slip. 51 year old here, i did the hair of the dog whilst working once in my 30's, but i was working a driving job. The anxiety I felt with the hangover and the build up of terror somehow made me prepare a gin and lemonade the night before in anticipation of the fear, completely discounting the effect my driving might have on another persons life. THAT'S the power of alcohol. Reasoning out of the window. I don't have that anymore. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I would drink from when I finished work on Friday (literally finished work, I'd crack open a tin on the drive home) till Sunday evening drinking almost every hour I was awake, Monday morning I'd feel dreadful, my normal routine was to walk the dogs in the morning, I'd throw up 4/5 times in the verge walking them, just clear liquid with a bit of foam and feel better for that, feed them put two cans in my pocket and get into the van, drink one on the way to work that would keep me going till about lunch time, I'd fight through the afternoon, then have the second the moment I left, sometimes in the summer that beer had sat in my van all day it was as warm as bath water but I'd still drink it for relief, buy more on the way home and I think by about wed/Thurs I'd start to feel "normal" again ready to screw it all up again on Friday like the week before.

@@jamesbarker3620 honestly? Being horribly hungover/ill was a side effect of that and hair of the dog was the only treatment that worked. Ive since discovered that issues with work/relationship/boredom were all caused by drinking, my partner didn't want to interact with me because I was always drunk, work sucked because I was hung over, because I was drinking I didn't have any hobbies or interests, now I'm sober those issues are almost fixing themselves (with a little bit of effort from me). What a brilliant video. This is exactly the point where things begin going off the rails. Once the round-the-clock drinking begins, just know that the only way to safely stop is by being weened off the alcohol medically. Librium and Ativan, along with B vitamins, magnesium, folic acid, etc….it all must be restored since we deplete that healthy stuff via excessive drinking. On top of that, the alcohols blood pressure and heart rate begin to rise whenever they attempt stopping for too long. It’s a dangerous place to be. Both physically and mentally.

What really helped me get sober was buying a Bac Track breathalyzer. I woke up a handful of times, thinking before I would have been completely sober and blowing double the legal limit after sleeping all night. Also realizing that after work and not being drunk I was .2, .25+. Not being blackout drunk blowing .35. I would push through the day having 2 drinks to get through and not reach .00 until 5pm that day and shaking like a leaf only to chug some Vodka. 75 days sober, did it completely on my own and I really have 0 desire to ever drink again.

But when the vodka binges started, thats when hair of the dog became a terrible idea. One shot and id be right back into party mode; at first it was great. But quickly dependence set in. Sorry but it’s not the same thing....the alcoholic NEEDS to drink in the morning. A marijuana “addict” does not have to smoke, they like to, but they will not be physically ill and unable to function if they don’t smoke.... I’ve been a daily marijuana user for 30 years, but there are times when I have a business meeting / important work, so I will not smoke until the evening that day. I still feel totally normal whether or not I smoke. That won’t be the case for an alcoholics

That is exactly what happened to me....needless to say i lost 3 jobs in a row. Its a quick progression thats the scary thing. Back on track now but i take one day at a time, i am under no illusions that i can fall straight back into it anytime should i touch one drink.

Been drinking all day every day for 20 years, never had a bad hangover. I thought about quitting many times but no good reason ever came up to do so. It is fun and cheap, helped with my arthritis more than any prescription or injection ever did. I know it is bad but never had a dui, never been to the hospital because of it, my labs come back perfect. My grandpa smoked packs a day and drank a handle of vodka daily and lived to be 90. It is very weird though, healthy people die young from eating tainted salad or get hit by a truck on an early morning jog while I am passed out. Drinking, smoking, drugs, massive amounts of unprotected sex, vaping, never worked out, bad diet, poor hygiene, but still going.

I think not having to check in on Monday for work can help a bit with the "hair of the dog", in the sense that you can "extend" you Sunday also - then figure out for the rest of the week how to taper and prepare for the following weekend.

I'm a none drinker. Why do you weekend binge drinkers force others to drink? I've never understood this. If one of my mates was on water I couldn't care less. It was a 'problem' with the drinker though.

I like a drink in moderation if I wake up with a hangover and its very rare now last thing I want is another drink until 5pm if at all and then it's 2 or 3 I feel for those who have the need to function i know of people who I've worked with who consume at work but have hidden the booze in a pop bottles as you:ve said but you could smell the booze. This is the first vlog of yours I have watched and I have to say you have balls to talk openly about your addiction I wish you well and good luck.
