I really appreciate how transparent your channel is. I strongly believe in what you said, everyone wants to share good news, but everyone has their bad days with their natural hair. So this was encouraging in its own way to keep pressing forward no matter what state your hair is in. Thank you Ebony ♥

You may want to try clarifying and using an elasticity treatment to see if that works before you cut it. I hope all goes well!

Ouidad Curl Recovery Melt-down is one if you're willing to spend quite a bit of money. Aphoghee Curlific Texture Treatment is a relatively inexpensive one as well.

Thanks for the honesty I appreciate it, nice to see vloggers go through frustrations too cause when I try to emulate some of yalls styles I get frustrated because they never come out right 🙂. A lot of the ladies commenting have great suggestions in new to this so unfortunately I don't have any good luck doll and don't get frustrated don't cut your hair I think it's beautiful 👍🏾

I used to flat iron my hair about once a quarter, or 3-4 times a year. My curls did get a little loose. It wasn't damaged though, more like a loss of elasticity, the beginnings of heat training or heat damage. When I noticed it, I stopped applying heat of any kind and within a year my curls were back to normal. My advice would be to lay off all heat. Get back to a basic hair care routine wash weekly or by weekly, use a gentle but effective deep conditioner, using oils with the conditioner. No need to use a heavy protein deep conditioning weekly. What's the purpose of that? Eventually you will have an imbalance if your hair doesn't need it. As I continued to listen to this while typing, you may have multiple issues as too much steam can also cause over moisture which mimics protein imbalance, loss of elasticity, etc. Doing this on top of using heavy protein weekly is too much. Don't go overboard cutting, just get back to a simple routine, yes let it air dry, or twist it and put rods at the ends and let it dry. I put twists in my hair and rolled the ends with small silk rollers for about a year. I didn't need rollers all over for that entire time as I have about 3 different curl patterns. My front is the loosest and required rollers on the ends the longest. The back maybe very little to just a couple of months, sides a little longer like 6 months, but the top and front required longer, but eventually my curls got back to normal from root to tip. My curl pattern returned on its own, but it was a combo of using heat every 4 months and some sort of loss of elasticity due to that and protein/moisture imbalance that caused the issue. I do not believe my hair required cutting or anything drastic. It really needed me to stop doing the most. A simple wash and condition, with added oils works wonders. The Shea Moisture smooth and repair shampoo and deep conditioner mixed with the raw Shea butter moisterizing hair mask became my go to shampoo and deep conditioner. I added avacado, castor, Almond, jojoba, grapefruit oils on top of the deep conditioner and let that sit while I finished my shower, then rinsed it out. You seem to have a very fine and somewhat loose curl pattern to start with so you have to be careful with overmoisterizing, over conditioning etc as it wrecks havoc on you hairs elasticity. Sometimes in our quest to care for our hair we do too much. Step back and really evaluate what's necessary to maintain healthy hair and change it up in the simplest way possible and you might just notice your hair getting back to normal. Also make sure your nutrients are up to par as well with a good multi and some added supplements. It's imperative that iron, Vit D calcium, potassium, Magnesium, omega fish oils, and fiber is on point. Your hair needs essential nutrients and minerals to thrive. Hang in there. You got this!🙌🏾

This happened to me last year. I knew something was up because I didn't have as much shrinkage and my curls didn't pop-they flopped. 😂Try shampooing with a SULFATE shampoo to remove buildup and deep conditioning with heat then follow with a moisturizing conditioner.

thank you for making this video. I have slightly longer hair than BSL. and have had slight damage from regular treatment of my hair. + I need to be gentler on my hair overall). but I feel like so many naturals, once we get to a certain length, we can no longer complain or be disappointed. I get the feedback of: why are you upset? you have so much hair... well i still want it longer. and it still bothers me that i damaged it, even with all this length

As someone who is also in a hair rut...I totally understand how you are feeling. My issue is more that I do not know how to handle my current curl pattern (its finally no heat damage) and shape in a way that matches my lifestyle (I am a yoga teacher and I sweat my hair out literally every few days so anything beyond a bun and a wash n go are impossible). I recommend just starting over...not cutting off the hair...but more going back to the simple things that you know your hair loved...and also keeping a journal. That has helped me, I am slowly learning the proper techniques because I am constantly writing down the changes that I see in my hair. Good luck! You are an inspiration to many, if you decide to cut your hair...so be it...but please continue to share your journey I have learned so much from you! :)

Hi Ebony!!! my mom and I absolutely love your hair videos! u are definitely helping us to reach our natural hair goals! Thank you so much!!! your hair looks beautiful! there probably isn't anything to worry about with your hair, it might be a texture change that has nothing to do with what you've been doing with your hair because you take very good care of it. Just like the human body changes every 7 years our hair does the same thing, ever so often it changes . Naptual85 here on youtube has a great video on hair texture changes & why it happens. please don't cut your hair!!! I'm sure whatever you decide to do will be beautiful!!🌻🌻🌻

I totally feel your pain!!! I was having some major problems with my hair, and I had no clue what was causing it. The first thing I noticed was my hair texture had become extremely dry and brittle. My curl pattern had changed to a limp frizzy mess. My edges had thinned, and I was losing a lot of my hair! It didn't matter how I styled my hair. If I straightened it I would lose hair. If I wore my natural curls I would still lose a lot of hair. I initially thought it was just stress. Then I went to the Doctor for an annual physical, and they diagnosed me with having an underactive thyroid and vitamin D deficiency. I am just hoping with proper treatment that my hair can return to its healthy state.

Ouidad curl recovery melt down extreme repair mask its an elasticity treatment. You can find it in Ulta or online. It's pricey $44 but it works miracles. It replaces the elasticity in your curls and brings them back to life. Its very concentrated so you do not need a lot of it one jar lasted me about three to four treatments.

I had that same issue, gave in and cut. I love it now but I miss the length. I only wish I took some pics before I did it. But you clearly know how that is in the heat of the moment but I still don't regret it. Health over length, it will grow back. But FYI I'm not suggesting you cut it just expressing my own issues. I do think you should exhaust every option before you cut it if you chose to. Love your channel

It could be product build up, I have the same issues,,,,,,, the right side of my hair is a looser curl......When i notice my curls wasnt popping as much, I started using Aphogee 2 step for protein treatments it would always give my hair life, the Curls would be popping again.....I would do treatments every 2 month, but I still have loose wave, curls through out my hair, I used to have a fit,,,,,,the longer my hair grew, the loose my curls were on the right side,,,,, I would cut it to even it with the other side, it still hangs longer, I learn to love the loose waves and not get so worked up about it anymore...

Yes I have those moments too - I have been natural since 2004 WHL . Just continue to condition and wear more protective styles and give your hair a little break definitely from the heat. Your hair looks beautiful! btw: the front of (bang area) was thinning about 2 years ago because of color- I stopped the coloring- deep condition weekly and gave my hair a break by putting in good protective styles and now front is doing much better.

When I started my hair journey all my curls were quit limp. Once they came to life I noticed the left side never came to life like the right. I did exactly as you did I snipped all dead curls off leaving my hair to look quite funny but I couldn't stand to see those straight ends. Now they are growing in healthy. I'm just waiting for them to grow out so I can wear a uniform hairstyle. Right now I have to style the front differently to mask the difference. Thanks for posting! Sometimes it's discouraging to see these "perfect naturals" while your struggling with your hair.

Did you try clarifying with an acv rinse, if it's product over load. I use a light conditioner, and boil fenugreek seeds, let them cool, and let it sit on my hair for about 15 to 30 minutes with a plastic cap, then follow up with my Tresemme Moisture Rich. My curls always pop back. Fenugreek saved my hair. I don't have to cut my hair off any more from product damage.

I would think it's product build up and moisture overload. Clarify your hair with a very deep cleansing clarifying shampoo and then do an ACV rinse then deep condition with a balance of protein and moisture (like mielle organics) and then as if that helps. Also the bentonite clay might be your best bet

I had a similar experience and new it wasn't heat because I had the curls back after a warm blowout and then the straight came. All these years and trims later I still have a loose wave side and a curly side. My loose wave side I sleep on and the curly side my mom said I pulled out as a child and it grew back a tighter curl texture. She had to use the hot comb more passes on that side as a child! I think it'll work out. I hope you don't have to cut but I admire that you're not scared. I'm terrified of scissors!😀

My daughter went through this recently, but her curls have popped back. Once a week she sleeps with coconut oil on her hair overnight, the next day she did washes out the coconut oil using Mane Choice (the one for curly hair ) and then follows with an ACV rinse. Finally, she uses the Blueberry Bliss leave in. She has had great results. Hope this helps.

I know exactly what is going on. my hair is going through the same. I have been natural 10 years and it is WL. It took me a while to notice. Crazy because I was watching one of your wash n go vids and thinking "oh no, if she flat irons a few more times the outcome won't be good". I like you cut the front of my hair and am now transitioning again. my curls are not straight but much looser than before. It happened slowly over time. I would stay away from heat if I were you. I'm looking forward to a fresh start.

if you notice that your new growth is growing in thicker and a different texture than the rest of your hair that would let you know your curls are slightly heat trained. Some decide to heat train to keep the length but I decided to transition and cut. I love wearing it curly. I hope this helps!

I went though a similar thing with my hair. I was always diffusing and switching a lot of products, plus I wasn't always treating them the same way. My hair started going cray cray and losing the curl pattern etc. My advice would be: deep condition once every two week, use a plastic cap and leave it on for 2-3 h. When you go and rinse it do it upside down with cold water (I know its not pleasant, but it works). Try to avoid cutting the straight pieces even if they don't have as much body as the rest (I noticed yours were less full over there). Avoid diffusing for at least a month and see the results. I usually use a leave in and avoid too much products to style them (at least back then) because your hair is already in alert mode and can only get as much stress before reacting. Try to form your pattern in your shower with a really good conditioner before rinsing them and use a t-shirt only to take away the excess water. It's gonna take longer to air dry but the results will be really good. After 2 weeks you will start to see the results and then try and see if you need a bit of trimming, because I noticed some split ends. Avoid straightening them, at all cost. I know it looks good, but it will only bring you back to this state. I know it's frustrating, but it will pass.

Do you have excessive shedding? Usually if there's heat damage your hair will be breaking off. I have noticed something similar in some parts of my hair and I thought it was damaged and I went to go get it chopped off and my stylist said it wasn't heat damage (and trust. I've chopped off 5 inches before. I don't play that. Heat damage gets cut) but she said that she thought I just needed to more religiously do elasticity treatments. It may also be too much protein. If you are not excessively shedding and your hair isn't completely lifeless. It may just be the products. As others have suggested try a clarifying shampoo. Deep condition once a week. Elasticity treatment once a week. See if that helps! I know you posted this two months ago! But just in case!

Hey Ebony, Scarlett, the creator of Wonder Curl here. I noticed the same thing with my hair, and a lot of women's hair where it's fluffier on one side and might curl perfectly on the other side. After I cut off my hair and had a shaved style, I saw that my curls grew differently depending on the side of my hair. So, you hair grows in a circle, on one side, my hair grew back and on the other side it grew in its own pattern. Don't be alarmed about that, it's just normal. Getting regular trims will help with the ends of your hair since it is the oldest and most damaged parts, and that's why it's straighter than the rest. I hope this helps. Your hair is gorgeous, you make me want to regrow my hair!

I've been natural my whole life and last year my hair started breaking and my edges were thinning. The amount of shed hair I had on wash day was insane. What helped me was changing my whole hair and product routine. I switched to the tgin line and I'm using a homemade mango butter and this really started to revive my hair. Maybe you should take second look at you current hair regimen and switch things out.

I agree with most of the ladies on here. You probably have product build up -- you don't necessarily have to use a sulfate shampoo to remove it. You can try other clarifyers like apple cider vinegar or clay mud washes. Whenever I feel like my curls are being weird and just aren't responding to products, it's one of two things: either it needs protein so I do a protein treatment, or it needs clarifying and I do a clay wash. You may need to do the same. Good luck.

I lost a lot of length recently. I'm not entirely sure why, I just noticed I was getting a lot of split ends and mid strand splits. I had to cut a lot off. I don't use heat in my hair so I figured it was because I fell out of my hair care routine for a bit. It's crazy how sensitive our hair can be. I laxed in my routine for a couple of months, and lost years worth of length. Went from right under my collar bone, back to shoulder length while curly. It really sucks. I feel like things like this happen to a lot of naturals at certain times in their journeys. I don't know if after awhile the strands just get old, and more susceptible to damage or what. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I found out that I was protein sensitive. Like you my hair became dry by day 3 and had no real curl. I leave anything with protein alone. Also I agree with many of the comments. Quit co washing. I use 22nd Century Natural Women's shampoo bar. It's awesome. Best of luck to you 😊

I alternate deep conditioning with one for moisture and the other with protein. I only use a protein one maybe once a month.

Don't cut until you figure out what got you here. Something similar happened with my 4a texture and I kept cutting for almost a year and repeating the same mistake. My first thought with your video is the steaming causing damage or over-conditioning. The flat-ironing and diffusing could be additional factors. Choose one of the three, but don't allow them to all be part of your routine; too much mild heat in different forms = heat damage. What worked for me was 1. Elasticity treatments--(Dermorganic deep conditioning Masque or Aphogee 2 minute reconstructor (?) 2. Always rinsing out warmed up deep co with cool water, never warm and never heated water since the hair has already been exposed to warm product. 3. Jane Carter Revitalizing leave-in which I know you used to use. It has brought the bounce and elasticity back to my hair and doubles as a heat protecting sealant.

There was a point where I was cutting my hair because there are a few curls that no matter how much I cut the curl off and do not use heat at would grow back with a different curl pattern. I realized the curl pattern is just like that. And I'm just live with it.

Your hair is beautiful...you may have two different textures in your head. I have two different textures in my head. Though it is not ideal to have more than one texture of hair, I've learned to work with the two. Also, I remember in one of your videos you mentioned something about having more than one texture. I believe you said that one side was more wavy than the other. Good luck and best of wishes with whatever you decide to do!!

You could also try the Aphogee 2 Minute Keratin Reconstructor or the Aphogee Keratin 2 Step Protein Treatment. I personally love the 2 minute Reconstructor. It smells great and it's helped a lot with my curls. However, I've heard the 2 Step works equally as good if not better, but it's more damaged hair and it doesn't have a very inviting smell unfortunately. It's also sticky..

I am going thru something with my hair right now too.....it seems like the longer it gets the less curly it seems to be getting. I did a aphogee 2 step protein treatment last weekend. Hopefully this weekend I will see a difference. Keep us in the know when you figure it out....thanks.

Carolyn Kettle the longer your hair gets the more it's weighed down so naturally your curls will become looser, but if it's not a drastic change then I wouldn't worry.

Any advice - split ends all day! I trim, I twist or braid then tuck under a wig for work. I think the wig might be the culprit as my hair is dry at the end of the day. I'm thinking it's vitamin deficiency or water fatigue. Any suggestions?

The longer your hair gets the looser your curl pattern due to the weight. You may also have moisture overload because that will make your hair limp and stringy.

My hair is the same way on the same side and I haven't had any heat in it in a few months. I think it's a chemical imbalance but to combat it I've been deep conditioning and just doing braid outs and twist outs.

the best elasticity treatment that is inexpensive is AphoGee Curlrific texture treatment. let that sit in your hair for 45min to an hour, then follow with a deep moisturizing treatment and you will DEFINITELY see a difference. but be sure to start off with a SULFATE conditioner only because you really want your hair to be really clarified before using the texture treatment.

It would bother me that I drastically cut part of my hair and I would want to cut it all to that length, but maybe you should visit a DevaCurl salon or look up to see if there is a certified DevaCurl stylist in your area. Being that they specialize in natural hair they should know if the damage is able to be reversed or if you would have to cut it off. Even if you do decide to cut your hair you could just cut off the damage parts and you would still have a nice amount of length to be able to do different styles. I just cut off all my hair again in September when all I needed was a good trim. I was so stressed that I cut it all off and now I'm getting tired of being confined to the same hairstyle until it grows back out so if you do cut it, don't cut more than you have to unless you want to go really short.

I've been natural since 2015 (I used to keratin and dye it blonde) and I started straightening it again last fall. I kept it straight throughout the year. I would curlform my hair and then straighten it after it dried. I didn't want to use too much heat. I later went on to blowdrying it because it saved time and straightened better. Unfortunately, as soon as I straighten my hair it loses all volume, which is something I've always struggled with. My hair would be long without body and would sometimes look dull. I do struggle with dryness. Anyway, I found out my flatiron was malfunctioning by sectioning my hair off and then noticing short layers-at my crown it's like an inch, on the side above my ears its like 6 inches, and my hair in front of my ears are chin length. My hair was uneven from the breakage of 2015, but my curls looked fine and having it straight made it virtually unnoticeable. However, this is new breakage. I went back curly and my hair is so dry, frizzy and I do have some straightness like you do here. My longest layer is waist length (it looks layered but it should be neatened up professionally) I'm just afraid to trim/cut because it already looks thin straight and I also wear it curly so I have to find someone who knows how to trim for both. My ends are getting bad, my hair is dry and winter is coming. I liked straightening in the winter because it was more manageable and it felt better. My hair curly is shoulder length but my curls aren't uniform and my afro looks weird. I, too don't know what to do. :'(

Don't get frustrated boo what kind of protein treatment did you use? And you shouldn't stop deep conditioning maybe you just need to find a better deep conditioner the Shea moisture manuka honey is great, every time you use protein follow up with moisture deep conditioner clarify your scalp with ACV water mix and put in hair strands let it sit with cap for at least 5 mins then DC after you got this hunn

It's great to be super observant; paying close attention to how the hair reacts to certain products, tools or techniques but sometimes, I think some of us can be too hard on ourselves. Like you mentioned, things happen and that's okay! I feel like as long as it doesn't appear and feel super unhealthy to the individual which includes excessive split ends, excessive amounts of breakage and knots then why beat yourself up and or make drastic decisions that you may possibly regret later on? Plus you can do heatless stretched styles like braid-outs, flexi rods sets and the likes for a more uniformed look or just keep it in buns until you feel like your hair is back to normal? Now, your hair still appears to be fairly healthy and full especially considering it was old and stretched out hair in need of washing. Seems like maybe you need to work on bringing back elasticity into your strands. Also keep in mind, sometimes product build up on the strands can possibly cause the strands to feel weighed down. In addition to your conditioning treatments, maybe consider trying Bentonite clay treatment and or a clarifying shampoo to remove all possible build up? Then immediately follow up with intense deep conditioning treatments. Instead of chopping off your hair, I suggest that you go into recovery mode by doing lots of deep conditioning treatments. Have you ever tried Aubrey organics GPB conditioner? For me is the perfect balance of moisture and protein. My hair is always left strong yet very soft and full of elasticity after each use and it's gentle enough to be used every week.

IDK if it will help but maybe you can try using a moisturizing deep conditioner without protein, and alternate weeks or just use the protein DC one week out of the month and the moisturizing DC the other three weeks. Plus you might need use a clarifying shampoo or do a clay wash. I cowash most of the time, but when my hair just doesn't act right then I use either a bentonite or rhassoul clay wash. It gets my curls popping again. : )

Same is going in with me right now & its kinda driving me crazy, I'm also a perfectionist, everything has to be even with me lbs. but There is a small patch bout the size of my palm in the front of my head that doesn't curl up as much as the rest of my head. It is VERY frustrating. I thought about cutting my hair but I always have hope that my hair will return back to its normal state. I'm not afraid of cutting my hair, I just want it to get back to the way it was😩

One other thing - if you actually have breakage and split ends, then definitely trim them. The problem will just get worse. But don't trim until you're sure it's not just buildup or a protein deficiency.

Try washing, using a "quick conditioner" and just letting it air dry and see what happens. Don't cut your hair, unless you want to. Don't cut it just because the curl pattern is different, or non-existent, in some spots. We all have different patterns in our hair.

4 months ago, my curl pattern suddenly changed, my hair became so weird, each strand had a different curl pattern, some had split ends, a few were split at mid-lentgh... I don't use heat, never, even to diffuse or steam. So I started thinking, and I realized I had put too much protein on my hair last summer. I already had a reaction back then : after my last use of phytokeratine, my hair became super dry (the same day), and nothing could moisturize it properly. I successfully "fixed" it on that day with much water and oil-sealing... until I realize on November that my hair was damaged and I had no choice but cut it. Some people recommend not to keep a water-based mask more than 1 hour, because the strand can absorb too much water, then the cuticle breaks off when it dries (especially if you have a hard water like me). I don't use protein no more, except dairy and coconut milk, and I don't keep any mask more than 1hour on my hair. For now it's seems that it's working, still I'm not sure about what really caused that damage.

This happens to me! I kept cutting the front of my hair b/c the longer it got the straighter the ends got, and it disturbed me b/c I haven't put ANY heat on my hair in 5 years. I just realized after cutting it off about 4 times that's just how my crazy weird hair grows.

I thought I saw signs of heat damage in your hair in some of your earlier videos but then you (Ebony) said in a vid that your hair just naturally had a looser curl pattern in those areas. I was like whatever, it looks like heat damage, and maybe now as your hair grows older it shows the signs more readily. Hair ages too, sadly.
