I have high porosity hair. 😓 it's so hard to keep it healthy.
@allaysiamonet70108 жыл бұрын
Kay omg girl I totally feel you. I just transitioned to my natural hair about three months ago, 100% heat free. But because of all that heat and because I got highlights in the summer, my hair cuticles are so wide open that I'll hop out the shower and my hair will literally drink all the water up . My scalp is just so open and thirsty that it takes it all. So, I have to spray my hair with water with a bottle and try to apply as much heavy creams and oils which also sucks cause it weighs my hair down. Just yesterday I bought the Shea Moisture high porosity hair masque. I'm praying this is my holy grail.

I've heard many youtubers talk about this porosity stuff but never cared to make an attempt to find out mine, buuut since YOU mentioned it I'm going to do it. Thanks my favorite hair KZbin guru for always inspiring me to try new things with my hair and put a little bit more money in target and Sally's pockets (lol). Yes it can get a little expensive at times but very fun as well. I think it's just the excitement of the unknown wheather it works or not.

Hello how do I know what products are for low, high porosity hair? Thanks
@minimalassembly78938 жыл бұрын
I am low po also. It means your hair is healthier or at it's healthiest. The downside is getting that moisture in. For a while I thought I didn't have to "seal" since my cuticles were not open, but since the moisture takes so long to soak in, we need non-heavy products that seal/retain the moisture so our hair has time to soak it up before it evaporates. Products that work well for my hair include from Camille Rose: Almond Jai, Coconut Style Setter (alone) and Aloe Butter Gel in order of preference. Mane Choice 3:1 as co-wash/leave-in and Kurlee Belle leave-in under the Camille Rose creams or alone. TGIN shampoo and Kinky-Curly Come Clean shampoo diluted with water to cleanse once a week. I seal all my leave-ins and stylers by spraying on Jane Carter Revitalizing leave-in instead of an oil or butter. The SheaMoisture low-po leave-in is great for moisture, but some find it leaves hair frizzy without a styler. Blogs like Natural Hair Rules are also great for reviewing products based on porosity.

Thanks Ebony for explaining/illustrating low, normal and high porosity hair. I sort of had an idea of what the porosity terms meant, but you literally cleared it up for me with this video. If I may suggest something, since you are having a low porosity issue at this time when styling your hair maybe it will help if you used steaming styling tools like: Calily Heated Hair Brush Straightener with Hair Steaming or the MaxiGlide Steam Flat Iron. I have the MaxiGlide and my hair type is 4a/4b and it is the bomb! Or you can try the Q-Redew Hand-Held Hair Steamer to moisturize your hair. I think these tools will really helped put moisture back into your hair in conjunction with hydration/moisturizing products. I hope this helps... :)

I have extremely low porosity hair. I have gone through a journey of trying to figure out what to use naturally to correct the issue. I started with coconut oils as many people seem to love it and it supposed to penetrate and help keep the hair moisturized. That DID NOT WORK on my hair. If anything it got worse. I had lots of breakage and shedding. I think I have cracked the code a bit more after a year of trying. What seems to work for my low porosity hair is using a DIY protein mask. I pre-poo my hair with an egg, mayonnaise, olive oil and honey mixture. I leave it on for at least an hour under a shower cap (it's messy so don't wear anything you want to wear anything you love), shampoo, hair mask store bought deep conditioner (alternating weekly with a simple detangling conditioner), DIY Oil mixture with shower cap, rinse out and then spray my hair with ice cold water/aloe vera juice mixture to seal in the moisture and oils. Every other day I use the LOC method; I spray on warm water/aloe vera juice mixture, DIY Mango Butter, and DIY oil mixture on my hair. It's increasingly less dry and almost no shedding and my hair is softer. My hair also loves Expeller Pressed Grapeseed oil. It sucks in in like it's mana from heaven. So far this is working for me. But it's tough making your own products all the time, so I do like to try anything WITHOUT COCONUT OIL to see if it works.

Sorry to message you but i am feeling discouraged. Natural since 2010 at the age of 20. Even when I got a perm is was maybe once a year if not at all (my mom forced me) since Feb 10th 2017 I have been using mielle organic or shea moisture deep conditioner with every wash. I co wash 2x (no more)a week or less depending and I clarify once a week since I have low porosity hair. Thid was Feb 28th 2017 mielle shamoo, hello hydration conditioner, shea moisture intensive hydration masque, shea moisture leave in, shea moisture curling smoothie (used very little on 6 sections) then sealed with avcado oil from mielle and eco styler olive oil. it just looks dry
@bullyscentral72878 жыл бұрын
Shamara Lovely hey love maybe your products isn't giving you the best results meaning isn't really good for your hair, because yes everything doesn't work the same for all. But as you mentioned I think you should check your porosity level and try a different moisturing products eco styler is still drying plus it sounds like your LOC method is right but not the products

I have low porosity hair and it didn't matter what deep conditioners I used, my hair would always look dry after a day or so UNTIL I started using heat. Put your deep conditioner in your hair, put on a shower cap, then use a bonnet dryer to heat for 15-30 minutes. This opens the cuticle and allows the product to really penetrate and moisturize. Then rinse. It has made all the difference in my hair.

Hi! Your hair could be showing signs of microscopic product build up which cannot be seen with the naked eye, this usually disguises itself as 'low porosity' hair as the use of and layering of heavy products, butters and or oils (and even hair colour) on the hair strand can eventually cause build up... clarifying shampoos, baking soda and other means such as the clay mask may help this issue
@Cillacil7 жыл бұрын
Hi Ebony. I like this video. I have high porosity hair because I color it. But my daughter is low porosity. We have to be mindful of piling products on her hair because she gets buildup. We try to use products that don't leave residue and are easy to rinse out with out sulphate shampoo to remove it.
@STACiP27 жыл бұрын
Wow. I spent a few hours last ninth researching my hair. I took the test last year and it came back low porosity. Maybe I should try it again but today I did the same thing. Went and picked up some Shea Moisture. Tea tree oil for my scalp to make sure any buildup is gone. Earlier this week I did an ACV rinse which def helped so that's going to be incorporated in my routine as well. Good luck to you. Can't wait to see your results! Liked and subscribed!! xo

I actually just learned that that hair porosity test is not accurate at all, hence the reason why most naturals always end up with the same results. Plus you can't just sit the hair on top of the water you have to put it in the water. But there is apparently no true home test that can tell your porosity level.
@angelface47748 жыл бұрын
thingsilove18 my hair strand floated ...didnt budge at all...yet my hair behaves like high porosity hair (drying out quickly...aloe vera juice has started to help).so yea, the test may b flawed.
@imforgiven198 жыл бұрын
My hair went from high porosity to low over time when I stopped using silicone and started using more natural products...using warm water and not rinsing with cold helps the leave in penetrate the hair ....sometimes I wear a plastic cap for a couple minutes before I apply my gel. I love shea moisture but there is shea butter in everything from the shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner and leave in...all that butter can build up on low porosity hair. How can you wash away shea butter with more shea butter? I am still on the hunt for water based products. I currently use kc come clean and knot today...I also love devacurl...but that glycerin in cold weather doesn't work for me. Good luck.

I have to clarify my low-porosity hair at least every other week. I get product build-up very quickly. I also wash with warm water. I have found that my conditioner works better when I sit under my hooded dryer for a deep condition in treatment. I hope you figure out a solution quickly Ebony. I love your videos! ☺

The Bentonite Clay does work very very well. I usually add some Oil like almond or avocado oil. I have low porosity hair when I checked last year. I need to do another test soon. I do defuse my hair on medium heat you never know (smh). I promise I think it's always safe to stay away from flat ironing the hair. It's just not worth the headache. We put to much hard work in taking care of our natural hair and way to much money. Lol. Anyway God Speed and good luck.

I haven't tried the shea moisture low or high porisity products, but I've watched videos of ladies who have. So my comment here is hearsay, but I just wanted to put it out there as a caution for you to do your research on those product lines. The reviews seem mixed, and some of the ladies even say the high porisity DC works very well for them as long as they don't use it weekly.

I heard people steam with LP hair and it works wonders while deep conditioning. When "natural hair experts" came up with these rules, not all of it applied to everyone lol. It's a lot of things LP girls can't do that HP girls can. And vice versa. I think hair porosity, and density are very important. Probably more important than hair typing.

Hey Ebony, I was wondering when you did the test did you just sit the hair in the water or did you give a little dip into the water? I did my test tonight, but I've been seeing performed different ways?

I find that having low porosity hair isn't too bad. It's strong in protein, but requires a tiny bit more work when it comes to moisture. My low porosity hair seems to prefer me using less product and watery kinds. It absolutely despises heavy/thick products and man will it show! It'll lay on top of my hair and glisten like it's greasy even if I just washed it. I use warm water(on the hot side) to wash it and if I don't plan on using heat right after, I do a cold rinse. After my leave in conditioner and style are applied, I'll cover my head with a bonnet or scarf and apply a bit of heat to re-open the cuticles to take in the moisture. That works for me!
