Being an angler of 60+yrs, I must thank you for being the most informative/helpful angler on KZbin (along with Jamie Hughes). Your hints/tips have certainly improved my catch rates as a pleasure angler, which obviously adds to the enjoyment of just being on the bank. Thank You so much for sharing these improvements to presentation, which, no matter how much you pay for rods/reels/poles etc., the bait presentation is the most important factor in angling. 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I tie my hair rigs in exactly the same way. But having big clumsy fingers I used to struggle holding the hook securely without it moving while whipping the shank. So I got myself a fly tying vice to hold the hook securely for me and that made tying my hairs massively easier and a lot more accurately. I hope this tip might help some people with the same problem I used to have make their hair tying less stressful . Great vid Jon as always!

Probably the clearest and easiest to follow video on hair rigs. In view of your opening caveats (relating to rules/restrictions on commercials), I have two naïve questions please... (1) on commercials that do not permit braid, do you think that you are still permitted a braided hair ? I.e, the braid ban is only on the line from reel to hook? (2) IF a fishery did allow a full braided hook length and you wanted a braid hair, would you use a full braided hook length instead of mono?
@JonArthur2 жыл бұрын
I think braid is better for getting bites and definitely wouldn’t consider a braid hair as not allowed. It’s not the actual hooklength. That would be like calling a quickstop a plastic artificial bait!

Many thanks for your quick reply to my last question. Do you have an answer to question 2 please? That was... IF a commercial fishery allows a braided hook length and you wanted to use a hair rig, would you use a full braided hook length instead of mono for your carp fishing (as per many carp fisherman) that you say take it to another level and we can learn from? The reason I'm asking, is that there are some commercial fisheries that still allow braid.

Hi Jon Why is the push stop significantly further away from the hook than the band which is very close to the hook shank. thanks steve
@JonArthur2 жыл бұрын
With a quickstop/speed stop style hair rig you have to place the stop at the furthest end of the bait you choose to use. With a band it needs to be at the nearest position to the hook and will stretch away from that point depending on bait size, which is almost always a hard pellet or dumbbell for me. When I use a stop it is often with something like bread that will significantly expand and requires a much longer hair, or a big cube of meat when I sometimes want a greater distance from the hook (longer hair) which is good for anti-eject properties when legering for bigger fish. It also means I can use double corn or double meat etc. But hair length is always worth experimenting with.

Great video, thanks. When do you use a soft hair vs the stiff hair?
@JonArthur5 ай бұрын
I think that's just a thinking point for you to consider really. Personally I like a soft hair if the bait is wafting or semi buoyant so the hook and bait are separate. It depends how rigid or nit you wish the hook and hook bait to be. We'll never know for sure which is best.
